Jim, you are normally pretty astute but there is no way PJ is out...they KNEW they were gonna punt this year and made the committment before the season started to rebuild with the draft and free agents this summer. They hired PJ to rebuild on the model of the Spurs.
Avery, on the other hand is burnt toast. Mavs are going down in 4 or 5 and Cuban is gonna need a fall guy. It's gotta hurt to pay that much luxtax and get bounced in the first round.

And the Dallas window will slam shut after this year. They are mega over the cap with no trade bait but OldKidds contract.
Thank you for playing Mr. Cuban.
Avery needs to go somewhere else anyway.
No one with common sense would take him.
this may answer your question tacker-
kind of old but funny.
No, no one with your level of common sense would take Avery. Fortunately, the NBA is filled with some fairly competent people.
If Avery is fired, I could see him going to a team like Atlanta, or OKC in the next couple of seasons.
D'Antoni I think this is his last chance to make it work.
Yeah, but do you think Cuban will admit to that? Of course not. If he can throw Avery under the bus with a firing I think he will. Don't get me wrong -- as a businessman, I respect the out of Cuban. But his cutthroat, efficient tactics with money and managing do not translate well to AJ being around next season.
Then again, if you look at the records, it is taking close to 50 wins simply to get into the playoffs this year. 50 wins. That is a DAMN good season. All these teams in the playoffs right now, they are damn good teams. Dallas losing this series does not mean they are not good, it just means they are not as good as these truly great teams this year. By any measure, they all still experienced some major success. Hopefully, the owners and directors of basketball operations will recognize this. Avery, D'Antoni, Karl, they all should still have a job regardless. Go talk to the Bucks organization. Ask them how their coach did. THEY have reason to complain. The rest of these teams, they don't. They should be thrilled with a first round exit, simply because, with the strength of the compe ion this season, just making the playoffs should justify a very strong season.
Should. But it won't.
Avery is on the chopping block. If he isn't gone this season, he will be soon. It won't be his fault, but he'll take the blame. That's part of the territory for these coaches -- take responsibility for the team's success, and be prepared to get fired with it "fails."
d'antoni - started expanding the bench, getting some good production out of them.. then tightens the choke collar as soon as the playoffs start.
too much talent and not getting it done.
karl - i think he's hoping he gets fired
AJ - just because.
Mitc must go! I'd like to see PJ in Toronto.
AJ - most likely, Cuban can't fire himself
D'Antoni - no more excuses, Suns are better than ever and are still failing
I think most of you guys underestimate the effect AJ has had on the roster. He shipped out a lot of young pieces that the roster had, filled it out with veterans that give us absolutely nothing on the curt (Buckner, E.Jones, Juwan Howard, Hassell, George, Magloire, Croshere, Anthony Johnson). From what I have read Avery wanted most if not all of these guys on the team because they were veterans. It might not look like much, but the 06 roster had quite a few extra guys that gave us a big lift, as well as much better play from Josh and Stack.
The Kidd trade is either a request from him, or the result of him being unable to develop Harris and develop a succesful offense around him.
AJ's roster decisions are just as good of a reason to fire him as his on court decisions are.
Suns haven't lost yet idiots
lol...amazing he AJ goes from coach of the year to fired??
I think it's called "The Byron Scott Special."
