It's not clear the Spurs even want to be on the hook for DeRozan's next contract anyway. It's real easy to be loyal when you're getting in bent maxes. I don't think SA will fight to keep him if he doesn't take a discount. Honestly, DeMar has a long way to go to even justify what he's making now.

I wouldn't say he has a long way to go, considering he averaged 23+ last few years and has shown marked improvement with his 3P% and assists. The east has considerably less talent and, at the time he was one of the best players in his conference. I think he deserved the max. He's done nothing to show that he doesn't deserve the max, short of falling to James' Cavs year after year, but he still did well against other teams. We'll see I guess in 2 years what the free agent market looks like, but Spurs might not have many options if they want to stay compe ive.

I was listening to a few podcasts and a common topic was Demar's loyalty and how he felt betrayed by Ujiri. They were saying that Demar had the option to leave home to LA before, but stayed loyal, and after the "betrayal" by Ujiri, he will have lost trust in organizations altogether and will never fully buy in and might even leave to LA or some other team after 2 years.

That's plausible, but I also think it's possible that DeMar views the Spurs specifically as deserving of his loyalty. They're a model franchise. After all, the Spurs didn't do anything wrong here, they only traded Number 2 because he basically forced his way out.
