Considering Major is our best recruiter, I'd say if he did then we probably started out with no chance.

Mack's ship is sinking you can believe he won't be around for much longer.

Update on what went wrong with DT A'Shawn Robinson (24/7). Texas is thought to have zero chance of getting his signature on Wednesday:

“Alabama did a great job of getting in his head and laying it all out for him,” said a source at Arlington Heights. “They worked on him for a long time and worked on him hard, especially after they got him on a visit. They explained to him how he could come in and play a couple of different spots immediately if he put his mind to it and works hard."

“They sold him on playing for a team that constantly competes.”

“There was also a lot of negative recruiting toward Texas taking place,” said the source. “This was the case with all schools, but especially Alabama. Like I said, they sold him on the ‘team that constantly competes for it all’ idea. They told him to look at what they are doing compared to what Texas is doing. They sold him on the idea of stability there."

“To me, they made it sound like Texas was going nowhere fast.”

    “I don’t see it happening,”
the source explained. “Around here we are all a little stunned, to be honest. We figured he would stick with Texas. He’s told me for a while that’s where he would end up. I really can’t believe it. I thought he would stay much closer to home.”

Latest with RB Dontre Wilson (24/7). He's expected to choose Ohio State this evening:

“They (Texas) made the decision very tough for him,” the source said. “Texas really went all out and 'Tre had a great time on his visit. He was very receptive to what the coaches were telling him and he really felt like Texas would have been a good fit. The coaches did an outstanding job this weekend."

“In the end it just wasn't meant to be.”

    “No,”
the source said. “I can assure you of that (Applewhite's affair had no impact). Major Applewhite was the reason Texas even got a visit in the first place.”

WR Montrel Meander is expected to make his final decision this evening as well. Inside Texas reported earlier in the weekend that he would likely stick with Washington State because he believes safety is his ideal position and Texas wants him at WR. However, Mack made a call to Meander's family last night as a follow-up to his official visit in an attempt to seal the deal. 24/7 thinks UT is the favorite to land him.

Bo Davis was in Waco on Saturday evening for a final in-home visit with DT Andrew Billings and his family before the dead period began. According to 24/7, things went well as they always do when UT visits, but it sounds like Texas still trails and Billings' mother wants Baylor. He's still scheduled for a Tuesday afternoon commitment on ESPN radio.

Per 24/7, Texas has offered a preferred walk-on opportunity to Under Armour All-American P Shane Tripucka of Allen. Things have picked up for Tripucka lately so he's not expected to make any moves on National Signing Day:

“Shane attended their punt (Texas) camp and won the camp this summer,” said his father, Mr. Chris Tripucka. “Coach Applewhite has actually been recruiting him for some time now. He visited for the Baylor game during last season.”

“He (Applewhite) was at Allen High School to meet with Shane,”
explained Mr. Tripucka. “He met with him to give him a status update of where they are with their punters and give him details of a preferred walk-on opportunity.”

“He now has preferred walk-on opportunities from Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Boston College,”
Mr. Tripucka told Hookem.com. “He has a full ride offer from Sam Houston and we are hearing a good possibility of more to come from D1 schools.”

Word got out late Saturday that two 2014 UT commitments were at Junior Days for other schools. 2014 OL Demetrius Knox joined a high school teammate at Oklahoma and 2014 RB/FB Daniel Gresham went to Ole Miss with a friend of his. Quotes from Gresham on the situation (24/7):

“Fans don’t have to worry at all,” Gresham told Hookem.com. “There’s no reason whatsoever to worry.”

“I’m totally committed to Texas,” said Gresham. “Coach (Mack) Brown is a great coach and he’s the man I want to play for. I’m excited with what the future has in store with me and Texas. The Longhorns are a great program on the rise again. I’m a big believer in the Lord and believe that the Lord gives his hardest battles to his greatest soldiers. That’s the case with Coach Brown. We’re on the upswing. It’s just a battle to get back to the top, but we will get there with him!”

“I’m very anxious. Demetrius, Lorenzo (Joe), Duke (Donald Catalon), Jerrod (Heard) and I are all hanging out the Friday before to get to know each other better, so I’m excited for that. But most of all, I’m looking forward to trying on that No. 33 jersey on. I’m ready to see it in burnt orange,” he said while laughing.”

“Of course all of us will be doing it,”
said Gresham when asked if he will be talking to Texas’ top 2014 targets. “These guys need to know that Texas is one of the most storied programs in NCAA history. I’m going to tell them they need to come join us and be a part of something very special.”

I sure hope this one goes Texas' way because it's very possible they go 0/4 on Billings, Meander, Robinson and Wilson. To make things worse than that, UT will have ZERO DL commtiments for 2013 if Herron sticks with LSU. There are rumors out there that he has already committed to the UT staff and is just waiting for the press conference on Tuesday to make things official. One positive to take from all of this is Larry Porter already paying huge dividends. There's no chance this happens without him and he's a great example of the things Mack could have done on the recruiting trail had he been aggressive when UT was dominant. Potentially stealing a five-star from LSU in one weekend? That just doesn't happen. I haven't seen Herron's film linked yet, so here you go:

I wasn't able to be by the computer on Friday night and most of Saturday, so the whole Major Applewhite scandal completely threw me off as I'm sure it did most of you. If you weren't able to read about it over the weekend and need a brief summary, I'll do my best to catch you up with a timeline of facts followed by some rumors:

-the former UT women's track coach, Bev Kearney, was bascially forced to resign (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/st...-investigation) in January 2013 after being confronted about an ongoing lesbian relationship she had back in 2002 with one of her athletes. It's been a mess ever she since she left the school as she's thrown all kinds of accusations back at UT for why she was fired; she's gay, she's a woman, she's black, etc. She's also made claims that she has knowledge of other professionals employed by the university that have done similar things she has, but haven't been properly punished for it.

-enter Major Applewhite. Turns out Applewhite got down with a student trainer during Fiesta Bowl activities back in 2009. According to reports, this was a one-time occurence, Applewhite brought the information to DeLoss Dodds and Mack Brown, he was punished behind closed doors, sought counseling and straightened things out with his wife (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...andal/1886861/). One problem is the Texas Board of Regents was left out of the loop and that has some big egos pretty pissed off (more on that further down). This whole thing is different from Kearney's situation because even though Applewhite cheated on his wife, he did not techinally break any university or NCAA rules. Kearney did break the rules and knows it, but she wants a settlement from Texas.

-Friday night happens and Kearney/her attorney fire the first shot. So, why go after Applewhite? They know how popular and deeply revered he is within the UT community and this was their way of showing UT they mean business. It is thought that Kearney has a lot more dirt and other names she's willing to release if UT doesn't act quickly. Rumors go that Rick Barnes is involved along with football coaches going back to the early 2000s who aren't even employed by Texas currently. There's really no telling how dramatic this whole things gets when you consider how hard Mack tried to protect Cleve Bryant from his sex scandal back in 2010.

-the Texas Board of Regents met yesterday afternoon via teleconference but, as expected, no immediate action was taken. If anything significant is to occur, it likely won't happen until after National Signing Day. The issue isn't just Applewhite's affair, but the fact that the Board of Regents didn't know about any of this and now they're finding out that there could be a lot more dirt beyond Applewhite. Factor in the main UT sports being mediocre and it has a lot of the big money donors debating cleaning house completely. "Embarrassment" is a good word to describe how things have piled up the last three years.

-as you can imagine, rumors range from everyone being fired to nothing happening and this whole thing blowing over. To make things even more interesting, Applewhite has hired big-time lawyer and Texas booster, Joe Jamail, to represent him just in case things get ugly. A lot more information should surface this week but one scenario I've seen that seems to make the most sense has Dodds being fired, Mack getting a final year mainly because of timing and there isn't signifcant time for a coaching search and Applewhite will be retained. UT President, Bill Powers, is a different story as he's been clashing with Rick Perry for some time now and there are several political agendas being pushed.

Joseph Duarte from Houston Chronicle reports that Houston defensive end Zeke Riser has been released from UH and that he plans to transfer. Riser graduated in december and will have one more year of eligibility and can play immediately.

Here comes the interesting part, a person close to the UH program says he will walk-on at Texas next season, according to ESPN.

What is crazy is that Ive known about the Major thing for so long and had completely forgotten about it. One of my good friends was a student trainer of the team back then. He told me that the head trainer pull all the student trainers into a room and told them to keep the whole thing a secret. Apparently, all the student trainers were talking about it and telling everybody about it. So I found out about this the weekend it happened from my friend, but we had not talked about it for a long time.

Texas better tread carefully because I'm sure Kearney knows a lot. But as bad as all of this is, it could turn out to be a positive for the athletics department if a new regime is put in place as a result of the scandal.

I was so damn confused when I logged on Saturday afternoon and finally made the connection that Kearney was making a power play. It's a mess.
