If Burkett is the source of the do ents, it's not certain that the memos are forged recreations and not originals. Dennis Adams, a Guard associate of Burkett's, told the New York Times (9/16/04) that Burkett told him of the do ent destruction, and that "some of the things in the trash were pulled out.'' Given that the do ents have not yet been conclusively shown to have been created on a computer, it remains a possibility that they are originals salvaged by Burkett--perhaps typed by someone other than Knox.
Considering Knox was a member of a typing pool, if they were authentic it's very possible that they could have been typed by someone else. :wink
And Burkett just happened to decide this was the time to send these authentic do ents that he has had in his posession for years? Whatever makes you sleep better.
Either way, mudding the waters a little can only help CBS and Dan Rather. Of course, no one has come out and admitted that Burkett was the source of the do ents and CBS is under no obligation to name its source.

The bigger question is why would Dan Rather want to protect a sorry ass source?
The answer: Probably because it would prove he's a sorry as partisan who knew the sorry ass source was a sorry as partisan as well.
That's speculation. There is no evidence to prove that Dan Rather acted on anything other than credible do ents vetted by CBS lawyers and authenticated by do ent experts who are willing to testify in a court of law that the do ents could have been created with the technology around at that time period.
