Colangelo said yesterday that the deal was agreed to about a week ago, but only finalized yesterday after Eric Williams' player option for next season was officially exercised.
Interesting tidbit. No wonder word about Javtokas coming to San Antonio starting growing around that point.

Would a S&T of Nazr for Washington's Haywood be an upgrade? Eddie Johnson and Haywood reportedly don't get along and Haywoods got a pretty reasonable contract.

Also makes interesting the original rumor about Oberto for Bonner- I wonder if that was possibly a plan in case Williams opted out- which he wouldn't have- but just in case he pulled an Anthony Carter.

Just to play devil's advocate- what if Robertas does not come now??

    Good luck to Rasho.

Originally thought this was a bit of a nothing trade, but timvp is usually right so I'm hoping Bonner can play a role.

but is that one of the spurs needs? damn they already have barry, horry and finley. they need a bigman who can rebound not a player who plays no defense like bonner who likes to shoot threes all the time and another 34 year old like williams. but they got rid of rashos contract which is a miracle so i guess thats a good thing.

Well, if you look at what the Spurs did against Dallas/ Sacramento, it makes sense. I think Pop wants to have a player next to Duncan who is able to strech the floor because of his shooting ability to make the penetration easier for Tony and Manu. I guess we will see Duncan a lot more at C next year with Bonner/ Horry at the 4.

You get a 3pt threat that hustles for a C that we did not use at at all and makes about 7 mio a year. Both players are in the last year of their contracts, so they also might have some trad value to make other players like Barry more interesting if they package him with Williams for example. Rasho's contract is off the books which will help a bit in free agency. I expect some other minor moves so it was a good trade for us.

    Rasho gone!?!!?!?? Oh happy day!!!!!!!!!

...I know it's been a said before, but neither Matt Bonner either/nor Eric Williams will be wearing a Spurs jersey next year. This move was only to free up cap room so do NOT get attached.

Best of Luck to Rasho, it's best for him since he'll get more playing time in Toronto than he did here. Plus he's leaving with one more ring than he had coming in.

My heartfelt condolences to Angel_luv and Rashofan...Go Raptors?

I'm just going to say Matt Bonner could be Danny Ferry-esque for the Spurs.

Not sure if it's been said, but thats my opinion.

    Decent trade for sure.

    Great trade for the Spurs

They get rid of a huge contract to get two smaller contracts that expire soon.

    Good trade for the Raptors

They get some much needed defensive help at the center.

I wonder what teams would want to do a signandtrade for Nazr. It seems like the Spurs are looking at that option. But with who?
I think the Bulls are too obvious. I also think our front office is shrewd enough to use letting him go to Chicago as leverage to get some other team to agree to a deal to get us our long small forward.

Atlanta would seem to be a good candidate with their glut of long wings, along with the fact they liked him when he was there.

That said, they also are too obvious. IMO, we'll do a S&T, but it will be one of those out of left field type deals that no one saw coming. Of course, if they want to go get someone like Childress and prove me wrong, I'm all for it.

I don't like losing the defense that Rasho plays on Yao. The Rockets are going to be more than just 4 regular season matchups vs. the Spurs next year. I bet they challenge for division le and it is very plausible that we meet them in the playoffs. I don't like gearing up our personell just to guard Dirk. Yao is going to go ape- on Bonner. Then next off season the need will be someone to guard Yao. Hopefully Javtokas can gaurd as well as Rasho but again, I doubt that. We all know Ben Wallace could play D on Dirk AND Yao with at least some success but does anyone really think Big Ben is coming to town? Not me. Bottom line for me is this:
    Pros:
We are more flexible in playing small ball
    and Cap space
    Cons:
but now we have a gaping roster hole in playing traditional bigs. That is VERY bad when you anticipate playing Yao and TMAC in Playoffs. I mean, who is going to fill that hole? I hope we get SOMEBODY big for a true C.

Only an issue if Yao's injury doesn't affect his gameplay (which it could - he's not expected to be recovered untill right before training camp, which could give the Rockets a very slow start). You also have TMac to consider - amazing player, but the budding of Yao's monster games happened in TMac's absence - will he continue to be as good when sharing the ball? Also, will they get an actual power forward? I wouldn't worry too much about Houston - not to the extent of building a team solely to beat them. The rest of the NBA is in a new style of ball - more important to beat them. We can adjust in the playoffs, assuming we even meet them.

Mahinmi could be the answer but not this year imo. Is he even ready to start? The word on him seems to be 2-5 years from now.

The Rockets still have a lot of matchup problems, inasmuch as their team consists of Yao, an oft-injured McGrady, and a bunch of NBDL refugees. Every move Carroll Dawson made last offseason blew up in his face. They have an absured number of holes to fill, too many to fill in one offseason.

Awesome trade. Spurs made something out of nothing. We know Bonner is tough, hustles and can shoot but if he can rebound as well, that would be the icing on the cake. I also wonder what kind of shotblocker he could become given the training.

Rasho was good for 2 blocks per and that was a big plus in our system. If Tim does become our defacto center then being the only shotblocker puts him at risk for foul trouble. If indeed Pop is moving toward a smaller lineup (ugh) I wonder how that will modify our funnel and block system.

Williams being thrown in makes me laugh because the old timers in here will remember when Ghost was on his "Bowen is the worst SF in the NBA" horse and claimed maybe only Eric Williams was worse. Now we have both.

    Here's the E-N article.

Nesterovic, 30, is in Slovenia and couldn't be reached for comment, but his agent, Bill Duffy, said he was "fine" with the trade.
He is expected to become the Raptors' starting center.

"It was a great experience for him in San Antonio," Duffy said. "The Spurs believed in him and rewarded him with a nice contract, but at the end of the day, his role there had diminished."
I wish he could have elaborated more, but that is better than hearing nothing.

I will be a lot happier once I know for sure that Sho is.

"Acquiring Rasho brings us an experienced presence at the centre position while not affecting our cap situation,'' Colangelo said in a statement. "He's a smart basketball player who will help address our needs, particularly on the defensive end of the floor.''
