I don't believe that religion thwarts evil acts. I believe it gives people a moral out for doing whatever they want through creative, convenient exegesis of religious text.

I don't think lying to someone is a very bad means at all, so I respectfully disagree there. I agree about the moral out idea, but I think it's more of an out for ins utions rather than individuals. Churches and governments use religion to justify certain actions while being disingenuous. People often aren't aware that they are using religion as a moral out. There are those who legitimately are compelled to do or refrain from doing actions based on what a religious text tells them to do. Otherwise, religion really hasn't had any power over individuals, and it's no more harmful than a fairy tale.
So either religion is/was powerless to direct moral norms or it has spurred both great compassion and hatred. Either way, it seems by and large neutral on that front.
