I think it depends on the nature of the investigation into Flynn. Is it a violation of section 1001? If so, DOJ has la ude on how rigorously they pursue that. Violation of Logan Act? Good luck with that.
Keep in mind that Comey basically said that Flynn wasn't central to the Russia investigation.

Trump cares WAAAY more about Trump than one of his employees. It's far more likely that Comey was fired for not clearing Trump, after he was asked to do so several times.

You're presenting a false dichotomy. It could easily be, and probably was, both. Comey's refusal to drop the Flynn case was an act of disloyal defiance against Trump. So it was still a selfish act... he wasn't sticking up for an employee, he was reacting to disloyalty on multiple issues.
Based on Comey's prepared statement, he brought up Flynn once.
He brought up "lifting the cloud" numerous times.
Which does it seem bothered him more?

The case trumpies are making is that the word "hope" makes Trump obstruction free which isn't the case. The investigation doesn't hang on this word alone as TSA and others are suggesting. Mueller is not suddenly going to go well Trump said he hoped so there's no case here.
