Damn, I woulda gotten this one. My suitemate in college was from DC so we spent the whole series trying to pick up the games in Boston from either WOAI (which sometimes carried up there) or the DC AM station.
Otherwise, we had to listen for the CBS Newsradio hourly sports update to find the score. You Internet youngsters have no idea what it was like back in the dark ages.
Okay, here's one: what was Mike Gale's nickname?
Sugar
Damn, you guys are taking me back down memory lane.
As already answered, the Celtics swept the Spurs 2-0 in 1978 in what was then the first-round miniseries. It was the first NBA playoff series in San Antonio history, and the only time the Spurs played the Celtics in the playoffs.
The Celtics had swept the Spurs in the regular season, and in one of the games at the HemisFair Dave Cowens and some others went into the stands to fight some fans (yes, Virginia, Ron Artest was not the first, and not even close to being the worst).
Boston beat the Spurs handily in game one, but the HemisFair was ROCKING for game 2. The Spurs got a 2-3 minute standing ovation from the crowd before they were even introduced (this was before the light show/video/annoying PA guy days).
The game was pretty tight the whole way, but you always felt the Celtics were in control. At one point when emotions really got hot, Celtic coach Tommy Heinsohn actually walked out onto the court while a Spur (?Gale) was about to shoot free throws and grabbed the ball from him. The crowd went beserk and I and one of my friends actually lept up and ran down about 6-7 steps towards the court before we thought better of it. (We still talk about that to this day.)
The Celtics were like the Lakers of those days and the spineless refs, of course, didn't even call a technical on Heinsohn. And for the rest of the game he had them pretty much cowed. I had always hated the Celtics, but I despised Heinsohn from that day forward.
Sugar Bear, to be precise.

anyone? anyone?
I never got a response to this one, so I'll try again:
3 players from San Antonio's 1989 AAU National Championship team have ever appeared in NBA games. Shaquille O'Neal and Bo Outlaw are two. Can you name the third?
Here's another Spurs-related one (for the old-timers and the very hardest core):
Who is Norm Drucker, and what is his significance to Spurs history? I'll give a hint: the answer lies in the last ABA playoffs.
Very good question. I used to know the answer but I can't come up with it. I think it was some scrubby guard who didn't last in the league too long.
Hmmmm....
He's the ref who called that infamous out of bounds call, right?
I'll give two hints to this one:
1. He is the son of a former NBA player (but not a Spur).
2. He has one of the top 5 scoring outputs in NCAA post-season history.
(and since he's a friend of mine, I should take some exception to the "scrubby guard" comment, but I know where you're coming from . . . .)
That's right -- now what was the context of the call? The context makes Drucker's call significant.
heinsohns gotten his just desserts now all he does is cream his drunk ass everytime mccarty hits a shot for the lottery bound celtics
The answer is Mike Sugar Gale
Duh, the answer was right in front of you...that is why I asked the question.![]()
Seeing as I wasn't born yet, it's kinda hard to remember. From my view out of the womb, the Spurs were up late when he called some guy out of bounds. Replays showed he wasn't even close to being out of bounds. That's all I could see.
I answered Jim and Shoogars Mike Gale questions at the same time...haters.
As opposed to now?
Riiiight.![]()
Dammit I did...I became the Mike Gale expert after TimVP's rather rude comments...you think I didn't check him out?
Give props where it is due...I thought it was obvious.
Oh well...at least Shoogar has credibility and doesn't try to deny people who correctly answer his trivia questions.
Trivia question:
When Robinson recorded his quadruple double, what player on the floor had been his teammate for the most games?

Now I have fully admitted I started cheating...why would I not cheat using my favorite site?
Sean Elliott
Man, people can't get enough of my threads.![]()
Who was on the opposing Pistons. Nice job, Whotttt.
When Duncan was a rookie, he blocked this player three times in the same possession.
Malik Rose![]()
One of DRob's blocks was on Elliott. They showed that on the game against Detroit on National TV.
