I am somewhat in awe of the way he is manipulating media to try and control the narrative and dominate coverage. It is working well.
He says stuff with juuust enough plausible denial to say "I wasn't really serious", but which resonate with angry disillusioned white people, then gets to play the "liberal media" card.
That Right there though pinpoints what is Trumps greatest failing:
His massive ego, and overconfidence. He got so pumped up in the primaries, where what he said didn’t really have to be smell tested by independents, or worry about riling up Democrats, that he set his own strategy up in his mind as a winning one that doesn’t need to be changed.
The datapoint that his ego won’t let him see is that he is creating his opponents narrative for her. His ego also doesn’t want to admit that he is part of a larger en y, the Republican party.
He is NOT a team player. The same eschewing of social norms that is causing Republicans down-ticket to not just back away from him, but to actively disavow their top-ticket nominee, will not play well on the world stage either. Countries and alliances are not too unlike individuals in that regard. Trump’s presidency would see our great country turned into a pariah, and actively hand our enemies constant propaganda victories about an unstable, unreliable superpower that can’t be trusted.
Trump’s strategy is working and is, in its limited way, brilliant. It is also going to fail spectacularly in November when it comes to producing votes. It is a brilliant way to win media coverage, but an utter failure at getting votes.
The reality TV star with the outsized ego will be unable to see that. I would offer the fact that he didn’t pivot, and every day he doesn’t try to get the bilge pumps working is a day closer to that.
Trumps candidacy will have damaging effects long after the election is over, and we have sworn in the first woman president. It will play into the overall Democratic narrative of “too erratic and radical to be trusted with government” narrative.
