Windhorst was on the Bill Simmons podcast yesterday offering some insights on what he's like (Windy has basically hitched his wagon to Wemby now that LeBron in his twilight years).

Some interesting tidbits about his personality tbh:
-This past year in France was basically all about prepping him for the NBA. Like essentially the entire club was built around him: who they signed, practice schedules, etc.
-Very much into fashion as a french dude
-Enjoys being in the limelight, doesn't mind running in celebrity circles (Wemby is friends with Michael Douglas for some reason )

Gonna be an interesting mix. He's had guys like Killian Mbappe show up to his games and be in his circle. A massive, massive star in France, bigger than Napoleon and the Sun King, but a guy who knows how to handle himself. And then Wemby is coming to this wee little city that might as well be in the middle of Saskatchewan.

And yes, Windhorst is a little and attaching himself to Wembanyama now.

Yeah, he's definitely an interesting cat. MUCH more Shaq than Duncan in terms of personality but also seems like a guy very much committed to his craft.

I think the Spurs know the clock starts immediately when he's drafted and they need to ring within his first two NBA contracts to keep him long term. But that's pretty much the same for most superstars (and potential superstars) tbh.

It's gonna be pretty damn cool to see what he does to the franchise, city, culture, etc. tbh.

I'm trying to picture that one...

I think he's grounded enough to know he's in a good position. Tony liked his celeb status (not quite as big) and he stayed.

Yea the fact that he’s hanging out with international stars like Mbappé and Drake and wearing Drake’s signature shoes and all that at 19 years old speaks to his celebrity. He also grew up in Paris which is like the NYC/LA of France. I imagine he’ll grow bored of San Antonio pretty quickly tbh. But that shouldn’t matter so long as we build a winning team around him. He can live in those cities in the off-season. You travel so much during the season anyways that it really doesn’t matter. Put talent around him and build a perennial le contender, and there shouldn’t be any issues.

He keeps reiterating how he wants to win as quickly as possible. Spurs’ rebuild is going to have to be expedited tbh. Patient but fast at the same time.

talking the talk is good but he's going to have to be playing at an All-NBA level for that to become a reality

Yea he’s young and eager. I get it. Wants to prove himself to the world and to the Spurs I’m sure. I imagine he’ll calm down a bit once he gets to SA and gets acclimated with Pop, the team, and the staff and everything. But you can tell he’s hungry. I like it from a compe ive standpoint tbh. But yea I think he’ll come down to earth a bit after all the adrenaline and hype from the lottery and draft and everything comes down and it’s time to lace ‘em up and get to work.

15:51 Among all the compliments you've received, there's one about you changing the NBA game. Can you do it?
Wemby Before thinking about changing the NBA game, the goal is to realize myself as a person and as a player, the rest/the results will come with it. As long as you have a good at ude towards yourself, you can shine positively onto others.

16:31 You will turn 20 in January, technically you're still a teenager but you're already an inspiration for the youth and it's growing exponentially. Are you thinking and preparing for this responsibility?
Wemby It's indeed a responsibility but what's good is that I have nothing to hide and I know I'm a good person, so my influence on the youth can only be positive unless I mess up. Anyway, yes it's a responsibility but also a desire for me to positively influence the World and youth in particular.

17:24 You were talking about Bilal Coulibaly earlier, in your opinion what makes France produce so many NBA worthy players recently?
Wemby To me it's their own intrinsic talent. I was lucky to be scouted very early by Nanterre that accompanied my development & took great care of me, but it was my luck because all basketball clubs aren't like that.
You can see that with Bilal who should have been playing in a pro team years ago. I think there's still a lot to be done around the development of young players.

18:24 How would you describe your first contact with the US, the fans, the excitement around you, how similar or dissimilar is it compared to France? How would you describe it?
Wemby It's ten fold compared to France. The enthusiasm is incredible and it makes me want to do good to thank all those who believe in me and send me all this love, it's incredible.

19:16 You started the press conference saying you will be playing in the Summer League, can you be more specific? And what about the World Cup?
Wemby Yes, I will play in the Summer League, not every game most likely because I've just had a long season, and I will play more after that. I know I will play the Summer League, as for the number of games, I will see that with the franchise.
When's the World Cup starting? August 25? OK so I'll have some time between the Summer League and the World Cup. Of course I want to play the World Cup, I will discuss that too with the franchise.

20:17 Do you sometimes think the media hype is too much, is it a burden sometimes?
Wemby No, no, no. Sure, it can be a little overwhelming but I was prepared for it because I worked for it. But it's part of the job.

20:49 This year's shaping up to be a historic draft for France. We saw you propping up Bilal, Rayan. Do you feel like the leader of that generation?
Wemby Not really. I actually didn't spend much time with that generation because even playing for France I always played with older guys. But I've known Rayan & Bilal for years and they're my friends so if I can help them succeed, I'll gladly do it, as they would for me.

21:37 Can you talk about yesterday, the NY metro, the Yankees Stadium and tell us about your pitch as well?
Wemby So yesterday I took the metro to get to the Yankees Stadium, the metro was pretty good, there were lots of security around me. It's not like the Parisian metro, it's more roomy. I cannot stand up in the Parisian metro, here I could. People were nice, a little crazy at times but in a good way.
Then we got to the Yankees Stadium. In the US I always feel the love fans have for athletes. It was great, I felt very welcomed. About that first pitch, I trained quickly before the game and it was OK, but when it came to the real one, the base was further away so I went too hard and lacked precision.

Not really, he grew up in Le Chesnay, a small city that look a little like an US suburbs (big shopping mall, houses, and small buildings).

But yeah, he is for sure very ambitious. I quite like it because he isn't arrogant.
When he was 16 years old, his goal/dream was to lead a NBA team to a le as a dominant player (8:50min mark):

What do people want him to say?

“No I’m not really concerned with winning to start - as long as we’re compe ive by my 2nd contract then it’s all good”

The dude is compe ive. It doesn’t come off as arrogant or y IMO. He’s not claiming that he’s going to lead us to a le next year, just saying he wants to win ASAP. Shouldn’t be a revelation to anyone.

it's widely known that spurstalkers like players who don't say much, don't like the spotlight and take pay cuts. As soon as a player opens a twitter account all breaks loose. The main reason is probably because most of these guys here are in their 40s and somehow think we should only sign quiet guys who secretly pull their out. Which is also a reason why most of the board is obsessed with signing end of the bench players and thinks every All-Star caliber player is a locker room cancer.
