He's not even really fat anymore.
Really? Then what's the latest on why Pop's not giving him any playing time?

I think almost anyone in the NBA is better than Elson/Oberto. So I hope he gets playing time soon.
For some reason, the auto-subs in my NBA 2K7 bring in Butler at the backup PG over Beno/Vaughn - maybe they've got an inside secret.

DBrown was available. But he was 'lazy' or whatever. So now his lazy ass is putting up 12 and 5 a night for the Hornets. The Spurs could have some young role players (or a rising star, in the case of JHoward) but $ got in the way. You don't hear the front office mentioned in high regard as it once was in the national media. But it's not all their fault, they are just playing the hand they've been dealt by ownership.
Don't change history, JHoward was about Kidd not saving money.

That's just Pop being Pop. Jack hardly saw the court his first year in SA. In the next he was hitting le clinching shots.

Here are the year-by-year "significant" acquisitions by the Spurs in the Tim Duncan era. *=player 25 or younger, ()= did not win (or has not yet won) a ring with the Spurs.

98 Tim Duncan*, Malik Rose*, Jaren Jackson
99 Antonio Daniels*, Mario Elie, Steve Kerr, Jerome Kersey
    00 (Samaki Walker*), (Terry Porter),
    01 (Derek Anderson*), Danny Ferry
02 Tony Parker*, Stephen Jackson*, Bruce Bowen, Steve Smith
03 Emmanuel Ginobili*, Speedy Claxton*, Devin Brown*, Kevin Willis, Steve Kerr
04 (Hidayet Turkoglu*), Radoslav Nesterovic, Robert Horry "Missed out on": Barbosa*, Howard*
05 Beno Udrih*, Nazr Mohammad, Brent Barry "Missed out on": Nocioni*
06 (Michael Finley), (Nick Van Exel), (Fabricio Oberto)
07 (Jackie Butler*), (Francisco Elson), (Matt Bonner)

You can see that from 1998 until 2004, the Spurs were pretty much on a roll. Every year they picked up at least one under-25 player of reasonable quality who at least played significant minutes. And of course were able to supplement them with a solid veteran, but I would argue that the bulk of the heavy lifting was done by the young guys and not the veteran FA pickups.

However, given the so-far negative trend in Beno and the question marks about Butler (and the fact that Hedo didn't pan out), the Spurs have no significant young talent additions since Manu. And it's interesting to note that eveyone perceptions on the players they "missed out on" coincides exactly with that time.

The jury's still out on Scola, Mahinmi, and Javtokas but it's extremely doubtful any of them will turn out to be near the quality of Barbosa, Howard, and Nocioni.

So did the Spurs just have a lucky streak that was bound to come to an end, have they just gotten worse in their ability to draft young talent, or has the compe ion just caught up with them?

Right, it was about saving cap room in a given year to after star free agents (ie Kidd).

Kori you need to use your lobbying powers of the spurstalk army and submit a huge email to the spurs front office saying we are all die hard fans but we feel like we're being betrayed by the owners for not putting up some sort of effort to surround the greatest NBA player of all time with enough talent to make a serious run.
Michael Jordan plays for the Spurs?

Then why haven't they shown it? If they can do better, why aren't they?
Why didn't the Heat play better last year when they easily could have who the knows you want a magic answer to that question. What i am sure of is they are better than this not le contenders but better than this and are gong to start playing better before the year is out.

It isn't that the Spurs have drafted too many forgien players, its that they've tried to do it all with free agency and vets as opposed to bringing in players through draft picks as well. They lost that balance.

What was classic in a sad way was Eddie Jones coming in and beating the Spurs. The one washed up perimeter player the Spurs don't have beats them.

You know what I don't get? How the heck are the Rockets managing to win games and be #1 defensively in the league with no Yao? They have f-ing Rafar Alston as their starting PG. That team is full of scrubs and they're still getting the job done.

Yeah, but when you just say it was about money you are trying to frame it as though it was the FO being cheap. It was nothing of the sort.

Either way, it was a stupid move and I don't think anyone will disagree with that.

They need to actually draft somone next year.

Eh? The Rockets have a good solid team and with the way Mutumbo has played why would they miss Yao on the defensive end?

The Malik Rose trade is a big reason why this team is so old. Trading two first round draft picks just to salary dump a player was beyond stupid. Mohammed was decent ... however plug in any veteran bigman in there and the Spurs win that championship.

    What an amazingly stupid trade.

Why have the basketball gods blessed such a respectable franchise with the cheapest peice of owners in basketball today? Why have they blessed such a detestable abortion of a city like Dallas with an owner who wants to pay for anyone to help his team win?

    arghgh

...yet so many here cheered that one.

They could have two useful young role players plus the perfect small ball big.
