GSH I am sorry don't know Van Vleet. I think what you describe in him is what they were looking for in Arci. While solid Arci doesn't wow and it was tough for anyone not already signed in this summer league team to shine anyways bc I think the Spurs were really interested in seeing the guys in the rotation to see if they improved first. On top of that this summer team coincided with rookies like Bertans and Murray who are very talented, so it was going to be tough for any roleplayer to even do much, and Arci was solid but just OK in comparison.
I just want to clarify that my statement wasn't a jab at Patty but I thought last season Pop was starting to turn the bench to him. He was very high usage, sometimes took triple the shots as anyone else not named Manu in the bench. His defensive deficiencies are well noted. They are not a lack of effort or hustle. There's just not much more he can do with his size and physical tools. He's clearly a tiny shooting guard and one that doesn't slash. I suppose if the Spurs keep a SG as a playmaker as a trend like Murray or Simmons off the bench it could work, but in no way should the Spurs overpay for Mills next off-season when he requires a specific roster and players next to him to shine and he has the skill set easiest to replace among all his teammates.
As for Smart , I like your idea.I think the problem is that Ainge has proven to be such a greedy motherf*cker that he thinks he has all the leverage in his trades and unless we give up an arm and a leg, he won't send Smart here. He won't take Patty for example. He's going to want a pick, Bertans and Anderson. Bertans bc they need shooters, a forward like Bertans who can shoot would be enticing but not sufficient bc he's unproven with a questionable medical history. He'll want Anderson too bc with the loss of Evan Turner they need playmakers and Anderson all of a sudden shooting that 3 was also interesting. So he won't be happy with just the one prospect. Then on top of that he will want a pick. It will be sufficient for RC to send him to bell. Lol anyways that's how I picture those trade conversations going.
