Fatah, not too long ago -- feels kinda weird to say -- seemed a reasonable alternative to Hamas; the peace process, however, made Fatah look puny and weak. Israel continues to blockade Gaza and settle the West Bank.
To those who point to Gaza as an example of Israel dialing back settlement, that was 9,000 or so settlers. In the West Bank there are like, 350,000 pissed off Zionists.
Hard to imagine they'd go quietly.
The West Bank is a total mess. The settlements have riddled the entire map with various pockets. The Israelis have moved the settlements before. But many of these are now populated by Russian and Eastern European Jews. They will not go nicely. These are not more reasonable American/western types (a number removed physically as I remember). The newer eastern immigrants have had rough lives and are toughly proud of what they have been given. I would not doubt firearms being used and Israeli police dying.

Israel can protect itself. It does. The US is an ally and helping subsidize their military (25% of Israel's military budget is financed by the US). This is how alliances work. Apparently, you don't believe in alliances and it's each nation for itself.
