EPA ends sponsorship of climate leadership program

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will no longer sponsor an awards program honoring voluntary corporate actions to combat global warming, it announced on Friday, the agency’s latest move to undo Obama-era climate change programs.

Since 2012, the EPA has been the lead sponsor of the Climate Leadership Awards program and conference, which recognizes companies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in their internal operations and supply chains.

In an email sent on Friday, the EPA announced it will no longer be involved in the awards or the conference.

Under Administrator Scott Pruitt, who has repeatedly expressed doubts about climate change, the EPA has moved to undo dozens of Obama-era climate regulations in what it says is an effort to ease the regulatory burden on energy and agriculture companies.

Trumps’ Obsession With Dismantling Obama’s Legacy Just Put Millions Of Texans’ Lives At Risk

On the heels of Hurricane Sandy, one of the deadliest and costliest storms in United States history, Obama signed Executive Order 13653 in 2013, preparing the United States for the impacts of climate change.

This order comprised the federal government’s response to the rising effects of climate change and

“leverages lessons learned from Hurricane Sandy and other recent storms, as well as future climate projections,

to develop feasible, cost-effective strategies to reduce and manage extreme weather vulnerabilities amid the uncertainties of a changing climate.”

Obama also diligently signed Executive Order 13690 on January 30, 2015, which “required that federally funded projects hew

to a Federal Flood Risk Management Standard,

to reduce the risk of future flood damage.

Specifically, the order required that

floodplains had to be based on the ‘best-available, actionable hydrologic and

hydraulic data and methods that integrate current and future changes in flooding based on climate science.’”

However, in his obsession with revoking any and all Obama-era laws,

Trump rescinded Executive Order 13653 in March. And he rescinded EO 13690 just two weeks ago.

While Hurricane Harvey has left Texas decimated, we have accurate “climate intelligence” and forecasting models to thank for warning Texans of the impending danger.

Trump, however, whether pandering to the fossil fuel industry or displaying the full effects of his ignorance, has proposed budget cuts that would cripple these systems.

It seeks to cut 26 percent from NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research,

which supports data collection, climate and science, as well as research into more accurate weather forecasting models.

The budget blueprint also would cut $513 million from NOAA’s satellite division,

the National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service, a 22 percent reduction.

Such cuts would cripple NOAA’s ability to keep afloat its satellites and data-gathering activities.

That would not only affect the military but any business that relies on data and governments that have to plan how to handle snowstorms and hurricanes.

Defying U.S. safety protections for human trials, an American university and a group of wealthy libertarians, including a prominent Donald Trump supporter, are backing the offshore testing of an experimental herpes vaccine.

The American businessmen, including Trump adviser Peter Thiel, invested $7 million in the ongoing vaccine research, according to the U.S. company behind it.

The Trump administration has blocked a rule requiring U.S. employers to report detailed pay data broken down by gender and race, echoing business groups by saying it would not have the intended effect of addressing wage gaps.

Arkema Inc., a Houston-area chemical plant that has been spewing “noxious” smoke and is widely expected to explode, had

successfully lobbied the Trump administration and EPA administrator Scott Pruitt to strike down new safety regulations for chemical plants

that would have targeted the Texas plant and gone into effect on March 14th.

After Trump took office, Arkema and its affiliated trade association, the American Chemistry Council, initiated a “furious lobbying campaign” in an effort

to stop the Obama-era chemical plant safety rules from going into effect.

The industry, which has spent over $100 million supporting federal lawmakers in the last decade, received

backing on Capitol Hill by a slew of Republican Texas lawmakers, including Sen. John Cornyn, Rep. Joe Barton, Rep. Pete Olson, Rep. Pete Sessions, and Rep. Kevin Brady. Even Democratic lawmaker Gene Green joined in

on the effort after receiving donations to his campaign.

In a letter objecting to the EPA’s proposed rules, Arkema complained that the rules “will likely add significant new costs and burdens to the corporate audit process.”

It should be noted that the regulations were imposed after a West, Texas fertilizer plant exploded in 2013, leaving 15 people dead and injuring 200 more.

Sheriff David Clarke Just Landed A Job In The Trump Administration

Fox News is reporting that the controversial lawman and conservative media darling will be joining the Trump Administration, although his role has not yet been defined.

According to Politico, “It’s unclear what job Clarke will take in the administration, but one of the sources said he’s expected to join the White House. Clarke likely won’t be offered a Senate-confirmed role because his nomination would face opposition from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.”

As a Black conservative and unabashedly pro-police law man, Clarke is already the right wing media’s favorite person of color. He’s found steady work in recent years speaking against Black Lives Matter and defending law enforcement whenever there’s a controversial shooting involving African American victims.

He’s also been a reliable TV shill for Trump’s anti-immigration and anti-Muslim policies, and was an enthusiastic support of candidate Trump during the campaign.

But his chief qualification appears to be his frequent appearances on Fox News. That, and

blind loyalty, appears to be all it takes to land a job in the Trump administration.
