With respect to the Russia investigation, during the week of March 20, 2017, Director Comey publicly testified that in late July of 2016, the FBI began investigating the Russian government’s attempts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election, including alleged collusion between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government. The inquiry appears to have arisen during the same time that there was intense public controversy over the FBI’s handling of the Clinton email investigation. On April 17, 2017, the FBI responded to my March 28, 2017, letter regarding Mr. McCabe’s involvement in the investigation into the Russian Government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 election. In that response, the FBI said, “the FBI has assessed that there is no basis in law or in fact for such a recusal,” without providing any reasoning, rationale, or do entation to support this conclusory statement.
Further, according to public reports, the FBI agreed to pay Christopher Steele, the author of the unsubstantiated dossier alleging a conspiracy between Trump associates and the Russians. Clinton associates also reportedly paid Mr. Steele to create the dossier against Mr. Trump. The FBI has failed to publicly reply to my March 6, 2017, letter asking about those reports. That leaves serious questions about the FBI’s independence from politics unanswered.
Mr. McCabe’s appearance of a partisan conflict of interest relating to Clinton associates only magnifies the importance of the Committee’s unanswered questions. This is particularly true if Mr. McCabe was involved in approving or establishing the FBI’s reported arrangement with Mr. Steele, or if Mr. McCabe vouched for or otherwise relied on the politically-funded dossier in the course of the investigation. Simply put, the American people should know if the FBI’s second-in-command relied on Democrat-funded opposition research to justify an investigation of the Republican presidential campaign. Full disclosure is especially important since he is already under investigation by the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General for failing to recuse himself from the Clinton matter due to his partisan Democrat ties.

As confusion swirled in Washington Wednesday following President Trump’s firing of FBI director James Comey, Democratic Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey went on CNN to make an explosive claim: A grand jury had been empaneled in New York to investigate Trump’s ties to Russia. (Another grand jury investigation, in Virginia, has been reported by CNN.)
Among the outlets that eagerly picked up the news were the Palmer Report and the Twitter feed of Louise Mensch, the anti-Trump crusader who has accused hundreds of people of being Russian agents, often with no evidence.
And what were Markey’s sources for this alarming claim? According to a Guardian reporter and the Daily Caller, none other than the Palmer Report and Mensch themselves. Hours after making the claim, Markey was forced to apologize for spreading unsubstantiated information, and through a spokesman, to reveal that he had no direct knowledge of any New York investigation.
Dem Senator Uses Info From Conspiracy Blogs To Draw Trump-Russia Connections
Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey uses conspiracy theory-laden blogs as sources for information on alleged Trump-Russia connections, according to a top aide in his office.
“In fact, subpoenas have now been issued in Northern Virginia in regard to General Flynn and General Flynn’s associates. A grand jury has been empaneled up in New York,” the Massachusetts Democrat said in a Wednesday CNN interview.
One of Markey’s top aides told The Daily Caller that his sources were Louise Mensch’s blog and a left-wing blog called the Palmer Report. Markey did not mention these sources in his television appearance.
A spokeswoman later released a statement that said: “This morning Senator Markey erroneously reported that a grand jury has been empaneled in New York related to the wider inquiry of possible Trump campaign and administration ties to Russia. Senator Markey does not have direct intelligence that is the case, and the information he was provided during a briefing is not substantiated. Subpoenas have been issued in Eastern Virginia, but Senator Markey apologizes for the confusion.”
Mensch and the Palmer Report have promoted unfounded theories. Mensch, a former employee of News Corp and member of the UK Parliament, has blamed Russia for the bombing of a German soccer team’s bus, the death of conservative journalist Andrew Breitbart and low black voter turnout for Hillary Clinton.
On Monday, she accused Sen. Markey’s colleague Ted Cruz of having “worked with the Russians.” The Palmer Report is a blog ran by a man named Bill Palmer and frequently writes stories centered on tweets by conspiracy theorists such as Mensch.
The two Palmer Report stories that Markey relied on as sources — according to his aide — were based solely on tweets by non-reporters.
Both of them center around theories that have originated from Claude Taylor, a travel photographer and former Clinton White House staffer. Taylor has previously claimed there have been multiple grand juries convened in relation to the ongoing investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
He tweeted two weeks ago, “This just in from a source with knowledge of Comey’s investigation. ‘two grand juries have convened and I know that one is almost complete.’” Republican strategist Rick Wilson, who is part of the “Never Trump” movement, responded to this tweet with “same.”
CNN did report Tuesday that prosecutors in Virginia have issued subpoenas for associates of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. However, the assertion that there is a grand jury in New York is unfounded.
In one of Mensch’s blog posts, also sourced by Sen. Markey, she pointed to two federal cases in Virginia and New York as possibly being related to Trump.
The Daily Caller reported Tuesday that the RICO case in New York has been dismissed and the one in Virginia is completely unrelated and involves the ATF. Mensch wrote in her blog post, “There will be more on this developing story as we receive it.” Mensch has not updated the piece after publication but has tweeted about Markey’s Wednesday television interview.
“So [Sen. Markey] has just announced a #TrumpRussia Grand Jury has been empaneled in New York…,” Mensch tweeted.
