Was never a big fan, but in retrospect, he always stood up for what he believed in, and when the chips were on the table, he put country first over party... funny, coz a lot of people that vilify him, do it for that reason, but that's also what they demand of Democrats...

He was a Republican. One would expect republicans to stand for things like that. It goes into the standing up for what he believed in.
But it should also be mentioned that he understood his party still had no idea what to do about healthcare (and probably still doesn't), and it was senseless to gut a terrible law like Barrycare for nothing.
IIRC, he was also one of the Gang of 8 that wanted to address immigration reform while guys like Cruz were playing the bad boy meme shutting down the government...
