    RIP

Former U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, a conservative Missouri Republican whose comment that women's bodies have a way of avoiding pregnancies in cases of "legitimate rape" sunk his bid for the U.S. Senate and became a cautionary tale for other GOP candidates, died late Sunday. He was 74.

2 in 3 MAGA voters say they’d support GOP candidate accused of sexual assault: Poll

More than half of MAGA voters say they would support a Republican candidate accused of sexual assault, according to a new poll.

In a recent Politico poll, 66 percent of MAGA voters who cast their ballot for President Trump in his last contest for the White House said they would back a GOP candidate even if “a former partner has accused the Republican candidate of sexual assault” rather than support the Democratic candidate in a hypothetical congressional race.

Twenty-five percent of the MAGA voters said they would not cast their ballot for either candidate in the same hypothetical race, while 9 percent of the same group said they would cast their ballot for the Democrat.

muscling churches to carry water for DeSantis and Republicans

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier sent a letter Friday to the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops demanding that the state’s Catholic schools grant religious exemptions from vaccination — exemptions the Church’s own moral theology says it cannot honestly certify.

The threat arrives in plain language. “Failure to comply could jeopardize eligibility for state educational scholarship programs,” Uthmeier wrote, aiming at the funding stream that carried roughly 88 percent of Florida’s more than 94,000 Catholic school students last year. He gave the bishops until August 7 to respond — ten days before most Florida schools open for the new year.

Within hours, the attorney general announced the letter on X. “Ironically, they won’t offer religious exemptions as prescribed by state law,” he wrote. “This is troubling and may disqualify them from state scholarships and vouchers.”

"if you exclude 3/4 of the people. Minnesota is mostly red"

    Land doesn't vote, dummy

Tom Emmer: "Minnesota doesn't necessarily lean Democrat. In fact, if you look at the 2024 presidential heat map, it is overwhelmingly red. There is a blue dot essentially in the Twin Cities."

    fascistic scapegoating of Muslims

Over the weekend, officials at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport abandoned plans to add additional foot washing stations used for an Islamic purification ritual after Governor Greg Abbott threatened to pull federal funding over supposed “religious discrimination.”

The outrage was on its face ridiculous. Not only would the foot washing stations have been perfectly legal and accessible to all travelers, but there are already two foot-washing stations in DFW Airport. The manufactured controversy was part of a growing wave of dangerous anti-Muslim sentiment being pushed by conservative leaders in Texas, according to a sweeping report The New York Times published Monday.
Texas’s Muslim population is estimated to be between 300,000 and 500,000 people, accounting for roughly 2 percent of the state’s entire population—and yet for many conservative voters in Texas, Islam has replaced the U.S. border as a major concern.
That same month, at a Texas State Republican Convention, every speaker expressed some form of Islamophobic sentiment. Multiple panels warned of a so-called “invasion.” In a post on social media, Bo French, the Republican nominee for Texas Railroad Commissioner, warned, “I know I won’t rest until every Muslim is gone.”

Looking forward, Texas Republicans are looking for ways to use state laws to ban or regulate Islamic cultural practices governed by religious rules as soon as next year. Representative Alan Schoolcraft, a Republican candidate from San Antonio, told the Times that Islam is “much more than a religion” and urged Muslims to “try to become a citizen where you’re living. Otherwise there’s going to be conflict.”
But for many Muslims, “assimilating” comes with its own risks. Dr. Farhat Shaikh, a resident of Frisco, north of Dallas, told the Times that assimilating meant being “part of the decision making,” but noted that being actively involved in ins utions can get labeled as a “take over.”

more empirical support for pedocon theory

Michael Allen Caruso, a former member of the Florida House of Representatives and one of Gov. Ron DeSantis's staunchest allies in the state legislature, was suspended from his role as Palm Beach County’s clerk of courts Tuesday after he was arrested on charges of kidnapping and molesting a child.

Caruso, 67, was booked into the Palm Beach County jail early Tuesday morning on su ion of molestation, kidnapping, luring and enticing a child, lewd and lascivious exhibition and child abuse, according to the Miami Herald.

Caruso is accused of sexually molesting a child on multiple occasions last year, according to the Herald, which cited anonymous sources in reporting the victim was a boy younger than 5.

When the child started acting out at home, his family reportedly started asking questions of the boy and made a report to law enforcement.

Caruso has faced allegations in the past of child sex abuse which he denied, including from his first wife and mother of his seven children, and has been the subject of multiple reports to the Florida Department of Children and Families, per the Herald.

DeSantis, who appointed Caruso to the position in August, suspended him from public office shortly after his arrest Tuesday.
