She does not want the ones that violate copyright restrictions. If the game is being streamed online legally and under the agreement with the regulating league or authority, then it is fine. NBA games being shown on LP for example are not allowed. If, instead, a network has purchased the rights to broadcast a game and to stream it online, then that should be fine.

    Klobucar Replaces Udrih For Slovenia
    04 September 2009

Slovenia swept Germany in their final tune-up games for the EuroBasket this week, yet they couldn't celebrate after losing guard Beno Udrih to a knee injury.

Udrih, who plays for the Sacramento Kings, slipped on the court and got hurt in Wednesday's 70-53 triumph in Bonn and will be sidelined for three weeks.

Jaka Klobucar replaced Udrih in coach Jure Zdovc's Slovenia squad and played in their 74-62 triumph on Thursday in Karlsruhe.

    Great Britain Make Final Cuts
    05 September 2009

Great Britain coach Chris Finch has included late arrival Pops Mensah-Bonsu in his 12-man squad for the EuroBasket.

Mensah-Bonsu only recently signed for the Houston Rockets and British Basketball had to obtain proper insurance for the power forward/center before he could join the squad in training this week.

The big man missed all of Britain's friendlies in the build-up to Poland, where the team will take on Serbia, Slovenia and world champions Spain in Group C.

Finch cut Justin Robinson and Jermaine Forbes while Kieron Achara and Flinder Boyd made the squad.

Britain have a solid front court because in addition to Mensah-Bonsu, big men Andy Betts, Rob Archibald, Joel Freeland and Dan Clark are travelling to Warsaw.

"It's an interesting roster, we have a lot of depth up front in the big guys and that will be the strength we need to play to," Finch said.

"But I also want to acknowledge the guys who didn't make the roster. Justin did a great job playing at this level and I'm sure he learned a lot.

"This was probably the highest level he has played at in his life. He is definitely one for the future as he gives us some things we just don't have at the moment.

"I'm looking forward him making a big step between now and next summer."

Finch also had encouraging words for Forbes.

"It was the first chance to see what Jermaine could do," Finch said.

"He was extremely solid and I will be interested to see what happens with him over the next year. It was a difficult decision to leave him off but we went for youth in there instead, even though it's a little unbalanced.

"For the first time yesterday (Friday), we had a chance to have our full squad train together. Everyone is in the right frame of mind to compete.

"Over the last couple of days there has been a good spirit in the team and I think everyone is looking forward to arriving in Poland."

It has been a very tough summer for Britain, who do not have their most talented player available with Luol Deng missing the EuroBasket through injury.

The Brits have been able to sample hostile arenas by playing friendly games in Spain and Turkey.

They won just one game this summer, however.

"The key to competing internationally is understanding that you can't control your environment," Finch said.

"When it comes to the national team you can't control certain aspects so you have to make the best of it and stay flexible.

"This year was a good example of that and we have had to demonstrate how we've had to be creative, but I'm confident we have it right."

Britain's first EuroBasket clash is on Monday against Slovenia - the team they beat during preparations.

Great Britain squad: Kieron Achara, Rob Archibald, Andy Betts, Flinder Boyd, Dan Clark, Joel Freeland, Nick George, Jarrett Hart, Mike Lenzly, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Nate Reinking and Andrew Sullivan.

Kecman, Erceg Are Surprise Omissions From Serbia Squad
    03 September 2009

    by Darko Nikolic, Belgrade

Serbia coach Dusan Ivkovic announced his final roster for the EuroBasket on Wednesday night and opted to spring a couple of mild surprises by releasing veteran guard Dusan Kecman and big man Zoran Erceg.

Stefan Markovic, Milos Teodosic, Milenko Tepic, Nemanja Bjelica, Ivan Paunic, Bojan Popovic, Uros Tripkovic, Milan Macvan, Novica Velickovic, Kosta Perovic, Nenad Krstic and Miroslav Raduljica have made the final squad and will travel to Warsaw to meet Group C opponents Slovenia, Spain and Great Britain.

Kecman and Erceg were with the Blues for 40 days worth of training and/or friendlies but have missed out on Poland.

"After so many practices, games and so much hard work, we've decided who'll represent our country at the continental championship," Ivkovic said.

"As we've planned, we wanted to pick seven players for guard (point and shooting) and (small) forward roles and five for the power forward and center positions, and this is our final list.

"I have had (in the past) a long-lasting decision to have one veteran player in the team who doesn't compete for the roster spot but just for playing time.

"But this time, I've changed that. When I've looked back through the whole period of preparation, all games but, as well, progression of young players such as Paunic and Bjelica, I've decided to cut Kecman from the list, while I was taking care of our prospect and long-term program we've all agreed on. Dusan Kecman gave a lot to our national team, both during qualifications and training for the EuroBasket, and all of us owe him a lot.

"As for Erceg, we've had a different situation. He's playing at position number four (power forward), but Milan Macvan and Novica Velickovic earned their places in the final roster this time.

"Maybe it was because he played less for his club in the previous season, maybe because he wasn't sure about his current (club) status (at Olympiacos), whether or not he'll be loaned out, Erceg didn't show enough at our training camp to be in our final list of 12 chosen players."

At the EuroBasket, Serbia will be led by new captain Nenad Krstic, something that was decided by both the coaching staff and players.

"That decision wasn't made just because Krstic had played more games for national team than any other called players," Ivkovic said.

"It was because he has shown qualities as a player and as a person, and he has shown a rare loyalty to the Serbian squad.

"One piece of the evidence is that just one day after his wedding, he came to our first training for the EuroBasket.

"His authority as player and such at ude towards the national team just made our decision easy."

Smodis And Slovenia Open With Great Britain
    06 September 2009
    By Simon Wilkinson

EuroBasket newcomers Great Britain have a tough task at hand as they face Slovenia for the second time this summer in their Group C opener on Monday.

This is widely-regarded as a must-win contest for the Brits, as they then face world champions Spain on Tuesday and European powerhouse Serbia on Wednesday.

Both Great Britain and Slovenia are dealing with serious injury blows, the former missing swingman Luol Deng while the latter are without talented guards Beno Udrih, Sasha Vujacic.

As such, this will not be a battle of the stars as much as which team has the biggest desire to win.

And Chris Finch's side has shown it can play through adversity. After gaining promotion from Division B in the summer of 2007, they booked their place for this tournament last summer, despite dropping their first game against Israel in overtime and being without influential big men Robert Archibald and Andrew Betts.

With Deng out, Great Britain will have to change their style of play to be successful, but that's nothing they can't handle according to the coach.

"Every since I took charge of this team in 2006, our style has changed from one year to the next. We have kept the same nucleus but the players have had to adapt to a different pace. Last year, with Luol playing, we were very athletic. This year our main strength is our play down in the post."

In their previous encounter last month, Great Britain beat Slovenia 63-56, but Pops Mensah-Bonsu doesn't put too much importance in that result.

"Even though I wasn't playing myself, I don't pay too much attention to that result. They [Slovenia] were missing - and still are - some key players and they looked tired. It will be a different matter on Monday," he said.

Slovenia have had their own share of problems to overcome. Back when coach Jure Zdovc was put in charge of the team late last year, the Slovenian federation tried to convince Radoslav Nesterovic to rethink his retirement.

The decision was based on the center's desire to let the younger generation get their chance to prove themselves and he has stood by it.

When he was first appointed, Zdovc had targeted a medal finish for Slovenia at this tournament, but that might be a bit too ambitious. Aside from being with Udrih and Vujacic, the Slovenians will be lucky if influential captain Matjaz Smodis overcomes back and knee problems to play before the end of the preliminary round.

Still, Slovenia should not be overlooked. At the EuroBasket in Spain two years ago, with expectations low as they were missing several key players, they won their first five games and finished seventh.

Key match-up: Nate Reinking v Jaka Lakovic.

Key stat: Zero. That's the number of games Pops Mensah-Bonsu has played for Great Britain this summer as they warmed up for this event. He was negotiating a contract with the Houston Rockets and then had to get the insurance that enabled him to play for the national team.

Sounding Off: "Pops will be fine. He's a high-energy guy so I don't worry too much about him and how quickly he will adapt and find his role." -Chris Finch, Great Britain Coach

Battle Of World Champions In Warsaw
    06 September 2009
    By Jeff Taylor

A battle between the gold medalists of the last two FIBA World Championships will be waged on Monday in Warsaw when 2006 winners Spain face Serbia (2002) in EuroBasket Group C.

Spain, missing their EuroBasket 2007 point guard Jose Manuel Calderon while he recovers from a rough-and-tumble NBA campaign with the Toronto Raptors, have two aims going into this year's event.

Under new boss Sergio Scariolo, their third coach in three years, the Spanish are seeking not only to qualify for Turkey, where next year's FIBA World Championship will be staged.

They are also going for the gold medal that eluded them in Madrid two years ago when JR Holden hit a late jump shot for Russia to stun the Spaniards.

"Gold is our desire, our dream and our aim," said Scariolo, who has followed in the footsteps of EuroBasket 2007 coach Pepu Hernandez and 2008 boss Aito Garcia.

"But first, we must take the first steps with security and personality.

"There has never been a team that has stepped onto the podium on the first day of compe ion. You step onto the podium on the final day and that is why we must focus on the first game."

Calderon made the all-tournament team two years ago and so did Pau Gasol, who unlike the former is in this summer's squad despite requiring a finger operation early in the preparations that kept him out of the country's friendly games.

Fresh off an NBA le-winning campaign with the Los Angeles Lakers, Gasol considered skipping this summer with the national team but the desire to win gold was too much to ignore.

It remains to be seen how many minutes he will play in Group C while he recovers from his finger injury.

Spain are better equipped than most teams to make up for the absences of players and in that respect, Ricky Rubio, Raul Lopez, Carlos Cabezas and Juan Carlos Navarro will get plenty of minutes with Calderon out.

Gasol's younger brother, Marc, who is also in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies, will play big minutes at center and Felipe Reyes, as usual, will offer a combative presence under the basket at power forward.

Rudy Fernandez missed games through injury along with Alex Mumbru, but both should be fit to play.

The opposition will ask a lot of questions of Spain.

Serbia is a country with a lot of basketball tradition, although the last medal by the senior team was in 2002 in Indianapolis. That team was Yugoslavia.

After falling in all three of their games in 2007, Dusan Ivkovic was handed the reins and the veteran coach led the side through a successful 2008 that culminated with first place in Group A of Division A ahead of Bulgaria, Italy, Finland and Hungary.

Novica Velickovic is one of their hottest players, the forward having earlier this summer secured a move to Real Madrid from Partizan Belgrade.

Serbia also have the reliable center, Nenad Krstic, as their lone NBA representative in this year's team.

Krstic has been such an inspiration with the Blues that Ivkovic and the players decided to make him captain.

The strength of this Serbia team, which has the main hope of clinching a top-six finish to qualify for the FIBA World Championship in Turkey, is perhaps that no players really do stand out.

It truly is a team of unselfish players.

Those who come off the bench offer so much that they could easily be starters.

Still, it's hard to look past Spain in any of their games.

Lithuania did beat them in Vilnius in their last warm-up game and Pau Gasol said: "The defeat against Lithuania in our last warm-up game should let us know how we shouldn't play."

Most people expect Scariolo's team to reach the podium.

"We all have good vibrations, despite having had an injury-riddled preparation," Scariolo said.

"The team has arrived as it needed to arrive. Now we have to compete."

Key match-up: Marc Gasol v Nenad Krstic.

Key stat: Turnovers. Serbia need to be on their guard against a Spanish team that gets a spark from the steal-happy Rubio.

Sounding Off: "Serbia has talent and young players hungry to make names for themselves. They are strong, they know how to play and most of all, they put the ball in. It appears they are going back to what used to be Serbian basketball. We must start on the right foot because if we want to be champions, we must establish the rhythm from the start." -Pau Gasol (Spain)

    Finch names GB EuroBasket squad
    Advertisement

    Meet GB basketball's big guys

    EUROBASKET 2009, Poland, 7-20 September
    GB matches: 7 September v Slovenia (1715 BST); 8 September v Spain (2000 BST); 9 September v Serbia (2015 BST)
Coverage: GB games live on Red Button and BBC Sport website (UK only)

GB coach Chris Finch has selected his 12-man EuroBasket finals roster, with Justin Robinson and Jermaine Forbes failing to make the cut.

Fit-again Kieron Achara, Houston's Pops Mensah-Bonsu and Malaga's Rob Archibald and Joel Freeland are all included.

Former GB Under-20 international Dan Clark is the youngest player and will travel to his first senior finals.

"We have a lot of depth up front in the big guys and that will be the strength we need to play to," said Finch.

"For the first time yesterday we had a chance to have our full squad train together. Everyone is in the right frame of mind to compete. "

Team GB begin their campaign in Poland against Slovenia on Monday as they attempt to put a trying summer behind them.

Their performance on Europe's top stage - for the first time in 28 years - will help determine whether they get to play in the London Olympics in 2012.

Denied an automatic host's spot, GB must convince Fiba, the world governing body, that they are compe ive at the top level in order to take part in 2012.

Even before they assembled for the summer programme, GB had been hit by the news that Chicago Bulls star Luol Deng would not play through injury and that the anticipated debut of another NBA player, Ben Gordon, would not take place.

Since then, almost every player on Finch's team has been injured and that was before a gastric complaint spread through the camp.

The upshot has been a succession of poor results, as GB struggled with the difficult adjustment to the demands of life in the top tier of European basketball.

Only in the last week has the news improved, with Mensah-Bonsu belatedly joining the roster. His scoring and rebounding could prove crucial on a team that has struggled this summer.

The team has won only once in nine starts and only scored more than 70 points on one occasion, when they lost 86-84 to Latvia on the opening night in Turkey. Only centre Andy Betts averages more than 10 points per game.

"Scoring's a problem - we're missing a lot of lay-ups inside and we're not shooting the ball particularly well, so if we pass up open shots or take shots, they don't go in," Finch told BBC Sport.

"What we're telling our guys is to be more patient, because if you take poor shots or make poor decisions, things get away from you very quickly at this level."

GB Captain Andrew Sullivan added: "I think we got to this stage a lot sooner than people thought - we exceeded people's expectations.

"We still have to adjust to the teams that we're playing against now."

GB's opponents in Group B will not be helping them out. Spain, the current world champions, proved more than a match for the US Dream Team in last year's Olympic final and Serbia, in the guise of Yugoslavia, have dominated European basketball for most of the last quarter of a century.

Slovenia are the only team they have beaten in nine starts this summer and not surprisingly, the opener is one GB will target in their bid to get through to the second phase.

"I really feel like Slovenia is our one chance," said forward Joel Freeland. "They will have all their players coming in, but we already beat them when their NBA guys were playing."

Since that defeat to GB in Seville, Slovenia have retooled and beaten Greece, one of the le favourites in Poland.

"No question - we're putting all our thoughts and energies towards Slovenia now," said assistant coach Nick Nurse. "We've played a heavy, heavy schedule.

"I thought we made some serious improvements with the games against Slovenia and Latvia. Maybe we took a little step back after that."

GB's first objective is to finish in the top three in their group and advance to the second phase in Lodz, where they would play three further games. To do that, they would need to win at least one game in the first three days of compe ion.

With such a tough draw and the chaotic summer the squad has endured so far, reaching the second phase would be a considerable achievement.

    GB final squad: Kieron Achara (age 26, 6ft 10in), Robert Archibald (29, 6ft 11in), Andrew Betts (32, 7ft 1in), Flinder Boyd (29, 5ft 11in), Dan Clark (20, 6ft 11in), Joel Freeland (22, 6ft 11in), Nick George (26, 6ft 6in), Jarret Hart (28, 6ft 5in), Mike Lenzly (28, 6ft 3in), Pops Mensah-Bonsu (25, 6ft 9in), Nate Reinking (35, 6ft 2in), Andrew Sullivan (29, 6ft 8in)

    Freeland: Slovenia clash crucial

    Eurosport - Sat, 05 Sep 00:35:00 2009
    Buzz Up!

Great Britain's Joel Freeland insists his side's opening clash with Slovenia will make or break their EuroBasket campaign in Poland.

Chris Finch's (pictured) men have been handed a tough draw in Group C with Olympic silver medallists and world champions Spain, along with Serbia, making up the quartet.

Great Britain will be buoyed by the fact they completed a 63-56 victory over Slovenia last month - without the services of Freeland, Rob Archibald and NBA star Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

Mensah-Bonsu has now been cleared to take part in EuroBasket, having secured a contract with the Houston Rockets, while Archibald and Freeland will both be available for the match on Monday.

And Freeland insists his side must make a winning start in Poland, or forget about making any progress beyond the group stages.

"Slovenia will be huge because we have got them first game and I think it will be our one chance to get out of the group," said Freeland.

"With it being our first game we will be fresh and won't be tired as if we had two or three games under our belt. From the other game I felt we played so well and that is already giving us confidence.

"As long as we give 110 per cent and go all out I feel confident we will win. Beating them the way we did in Spain was a massive boost and it means that we already know we have it in us to win.

"I really feel like Slovenia is our one chance. They will have their players coming in, but we already beat them when their NBA guys were playing.

"If you look at their team they are unbelievable. It's packed with high level players which is why it was incredible how we came together and came up against compe ion like that and showed professionalism in the game.

"I feel that if we can get that win against Slovenia then it would give us real momentum moving into the next game, even if that is against Spain."

While Great Britain chalked up victory against Slovenia last month, it was their solitary win in nine warm-up matches ahead of EuroBasket, as the absence of Chicago Bulls star Luol Deng took its toll.

But Freeland, who is set to join Archibald at Malaga next season, is adamant past results will count for nothing once proceedings get underway in Poland.

"It's been a tough campaign so far, we've had to deal with a lot of things going against us while at the same time taking on better opposition," he added.

"Obviously we would love to have results on our side but the main reason we play these games is to get better and try to achieve goals for Poland.

"Nothing has been going in our favour much; now most of the guys have been ill. I couldn't play two games in Turkey because of this bug.

"It's just made it tougher because for all the games we have not had a full squad, but that means Poland will be exciting to see what we can finally do when everyone is fit.

"If teams don't treat us with respect then it will be to our advantage. Any team that acts off us we will jump on them.

"The team is different from year to year but I feel there's definitely more chemistry going into this year to last. Everyone knows everyone and we all know the way we each play. We will definitely cause some shocks; we're ready to play that's for sure."
