Rewatch the 4th. He gives up open shots to his man 5x and 4 of them go in. His defense was extremely inconsistent. He stayed in front of the ball handler for once, but didn't stay with his man when they were moving off the ball. I think Neal alone gave up at least 8 points in the 4th solely due to his bad defense; maybe 10. Not including the And-1 foul.

His offense was A+ for sure, but his defense was C+ at best imo. He lost focus on that end in the 4th.
To be fair that's par the course for Gary Neal. We already know his defense is pretty spotty and often quite bad.

Grades have always been relative to expectations.

blowing a 8pts lead with 7mins to go,

blowing a 7pts lead with 3mins to go....

blowing leads or failing to protect the lead is what the spurs are good at it due to stupid decision making and trigger happy, doesnt help when the other team starts to fluke beyond the arc.....seems like the blazers loss faith and started to jack up 2 quick shots with plenty of time in the last 10 secs that couldve won them the game...

popovich never hides neal for whatever reason
he has leonard and green who can crossmatch
    even jack can guard 2-4s
they could have put him on wes matthews instead of damien freaking lillard

and the turnovers are bad but tis mostly because parker isnt handling the ball
instead its mills who has sloppy handles and he plays better offball so he instead gives it to green/neal/turnobili to run the offense

And his defense was at best " as usual". . .which is why he can't be 100, right? I was under the impression that you don't give players perfect grades if they perform the same or worse than expected on one end of the floor.

Man, I'm content with having D. Green and all but damn I wish we had Batum at the two...now HE is a guy worthy of starting over Manu at this point. The guy badly wanted to play for us. Oh well, great win shorthanded but the D is still a work in progress.

Well I mean it's totally arbitrary. There isn't really a correct answer. Grades have always been subjective and hand wavy.

No question. Spurs have tried hard in the past to go after Batum.

Then why even give grades if there's not going to be a fairly rigid definition for it? Wouldn't that kind of defeat the purpose?

Because most everyone here respects timvp's subjective assessment of games. I'm sure he has his own "qualitative" rubric for grading people.

Grading for term papers in the liberal arts (english, history, etc.) is necessarily subjective and the qualitative (arbitrary) rubrics for grading probably differ among different teachers. And yet people just kind of deal with it.

Wasn't saying they need to be graded super strictly like a teacher would grade a paper, just that I found it odd that someone would give a guy a perfect grade when he gave up nearly half the points the Spurs gave up in the last 6 minutes by himself.

    that almost went it wtf
In Portland where all lucky things seem to go their way against us I FULLY expected that to go in there and then they get a steal after that to win the game lol. I know Time was out, but that is how our luck seems to go there In PORTLAND.

Just got back. Ugly game, but I'll take it. Got scared of Batum hitting a stupid game winner in our face again.

Great game -- first i've been able to see all season. Spurs battled back from being down double digits, great individual performances, and, is it me, or is the D looking better these days? Btw when Neal is on, he's on!

The spurs have a big problem with turnovers.. the games wont even be close if they fix that
It's been like that for a while now. One of their main problems, after the big man situation.

Great win in Portland, not an easy place to win at. Can't leave Batum and Matthews open like that unless you have several hot hands as well.

Will be in attendance the next time the Spurs come to town in about a month.

We had no business winning this game without Tony, back to back and some sick still! I am just happy they got it.

YEP, I remember last year saying why are they doing these dumb ass TO's even though we were winning. They just pass careless passes all over and turn it over, can't stand it at time but man why do they keep it up? Is it seriuosly that hard to pass a ball normally? They tend ot keep it up though.

Spurs had 3rd fewest turnovers in the league last year. It's been a problem this year, but not last.

I remember later playoff losses last year when they would rack up a few, yes regular season and so on, but some games in the playoffs last year they started this crap! They won alot yes I know but check OKC series bro they started it there! They said if you turn it over against that team you are dead and the Spurs proceeded to do it at key times I meant late last year playoffs, Clippers later in that series to OKC they turned it over alot. I did not mean all year last year bro.
