Jindal: Amend Cons ution To Stop Marriage Equality

Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA), a potential 2016 presidential candidate, mocked GOP colleagues for abandoning their opposition to marriage equality and endorsed a federal cons utional amendment to redefine marriage to be opposite-sex only.

On ABC’s This Week on Sunday, Jindal told host George Stephanopoulos that he continues to believe that marriage is “between a man and a woman.” While claiming to be against “discrimination against anyone,” he lamented: “Many politicians are evolving — so called ‘evolving’ on this issue based on the polls. I don’t change my views based on the polls.”

He boasted that Louisiana — one of just 14 states without marriage equality after Friday’s court ruling in Alabama — has a state cons utional ban on same-sex marriage. He said he hopes the U.S. Supreme Court doesn’t throw out the law but that, if they did, “I certainly support Ted Cruz and others that are talking about making an amendment, the Congress in D.C., a cons utional amendment to continue to allow states to continue to define marriage.”

Colorado GOPer opposes anti-poverty birth control program: IUDs ‘stop a small child from implanting’

epublican Colorado lawmaker is opposing efforts to continue an anti-poverty program that provides IUDs to poor women because he believes the birth control method to be an “abortifacient” that would stop “a small child from implanting.”

The Coloradoan reported that Democratic state Rep. KC Becker was sponsoring a bill in hope of finding funds to make sure that low-income women continue to be able to receive long-acting reversible contraception, like IUDs.

The Family Planning Initiative pilot program had been funded by a $25 million grant from an anonymous donor. It worked so well that the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) estimated that the teen birth rate was down by 40 percent, resulting in $23 million in savings in Medicaid assistance to women and children.

CDPHE projected that the program, which would use $5 million from the state’s general fund, could save the state $40 million in Medicaid costs in the future.

Lawmakers Cooking Up Recipe For A Bloodbath

The very first bill being rammed through the Florida House of Representatives this year would allow guns to be carried on college campuses.

In the macho comic-book world where Steube’s imagination dwells, armed college kids will stand ready to whip their pistols out of their book bags and shoot down crazed campus intruders with flawless aim.

This delusion has been nurtured by the National Rifle Association, which owns so many stooges in the Legislature that a dozen others would have been thrilled to introduce the campus gun bill, if Steube had balked.

Florida is currently one of 20 states that prohibit concealed weapons on university property, the wisdom being that firearms don’t belong in college classrooms, football stadiums or booze-soaked frat houses.

Most of the remaining states allow universities and colleges to decide their own firearms policies, and — no surprise — the vast majority of ins utions don’t allow anyone but police officers to carry guns on campus.

Seven states do, thanks to the NRA. Florida is next on its list.

If Steube’s bill passes, it would open the way for firearms to be carried at private colleges as well as public universities, although each private school would be able to implement its own weapons ban.

Indiana, one of the nastiest red states, sets up its own Ministry of Information

Indiana’s NPR-hating Tea Party governor sets up state-run news agency to sidestep media

INdiana’s NPR-hating Tea Party governor is setting up a taxpayer-funded state media outlet that will complete with other media outlets.Republican Gov. Mike Pence plans a late February launch for “Just IN,” a website and news outlet that will publish feature and news stories written by state press secretaries,

Pence urged an end to public funding for National Public Radio in 2011 after undercover video recorded by conservative provocateur James O’Keefe caught a former senior vice president for fundraising making critical comments about Tea Party members.

“It’s time to end public funding for NPR, it’s time to end public funding for Planned Parenthood of America, (for) these organizations that have a particular viewpoint, that advance a particular liberal viewpoint,” Pence, then a congressman, told Fox News.

He pointed out to the conservative news network that NPR got most of its funding from corporate grants, but he said public funding should be ended to help cut the deficit and because its “biases are this clear and in the open.”

GOP Picks 'Voter Fraud' Conspiracy Theorist, 'Cons utional Sheriff' To Testify In Loretta Lynch Hearing

The Senate Judiciary Committee has released a list of the witnesses who will testify at tomorrow’s hearing on the nomination of Loretta Lynch to be attorney general, and two of them signal the GOP’s intention to tie Lynch to their criticism of Attorney General Eric Holder’s efforts to combat racial discrimination in voting rights and law enforcement.

Among them is Catherine Engelbrecht, a Tea Party activist who founded the group True the Vote to promote the myth of widespread voter fraud and who has clashed with Holder over his defense of voting rights, or what she calls his “radical, racialist assault on voters' rights across America.”

Also included is David Clarke, the sheriff of Milwaukee county, who has become a Tea Party hero for his criticism of protests of racial inequality in the justice system following a series of police killings of unarmed black men.

Both have become prominent Tea Party figures by voicing the line that racial inequality no longer exists in the U.S. and that the Justice Department’s efforts to stop voter suppression laws and combat discrimination in the criminal justice system are themselves racist. The Right cast Holder as the primary villain in this narrative, and prominent Holder critics such as the Heritage Foundation’s Hans von Spakovsky are using some of the same arguments to attack Lynch.

Engelbrecht’s at ude toward voting rights protections was perhaps most clearly illustrated with her reaction to a bipartisan bill meant to restore the Voting Rights Act after the Supreme Court gutted it in 2013.

In an email to supporters, Engelbrecht claimed that the effort to restore the Voting Rights Act — one of the great achievements of the Civil Rights Movement — was in fact a “terrible race based bill” that would “exclude millions of Americans from full protection of the law — based solely on the color of their skin.” She fumed that restoring federal voting rights oversight to areas with a history of racial discrimination in election laws should be called the “Voting Rights Segregation Act.”

Engelbrecht has worked to drum up support for harsh voting restrictions that disproportionately affect racial minorities by hyping fears of widespread “voter fraud” and recruiting armies of volunteers to root out suspected fraud in their communities. These efforts haven’t exactly uncovered the evidence they’ve been looking for, although they have created hassles for legitimate voters targeted by True the Vote volunteers.

Sheriff Clarke, meanwhile, has been a leading conservative voice against protests against police brutality and racial inequalities in the criminal justice system, and has expressed outrage that President Obama and Holder have
expressed some support for the protests. Clarke, who is African American, went on Fox News in November to accuse the president of fueling “racial animosity between people” by supporting the protests and even suggested that Obama was encouraging protesters to riot “with a wink and a nod."

He also contended that Michael Brown, the unarmed black teenager who was shot by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, was a “coconspirator in his own demise” because he “chose thug life.”

Boehner's preparing to sue Obama again — over immigration

But the DACA program wasn't controversial when it was first announced — it's only become politically controversial in retrospect, as Obama started contemplating (and eventually took) executive action to give relief to a broader set of unauthorized immigrants. So the GOP didn't sue Obama in 2012, or even in 2014, over the existing program.

Suing him now over both programs would raise the question of why Congress is only now taking legal action over something that's been going on for years, if it really thinks it's such a dire threat to the Cons ution. That's relevant to the GOP's legal case, and it's relevant to the politics of the issue as well — since the DACA program was pretty broadly popular when it was rolled out. (Polls are mixed on the new executive action. Depending on how the question is asked, Americans either favor letting Obama's actions stand — by amargin of 15 percentage points — or want it to be blocked, also by a margin of 15 percentage points.)

Is it legal for Obama to give relief to millions of immigrants?

The president doesn't have the authority to give anyone legal status in the US. But the current system gives the executive branch broad authority to decide what it wants to prioritize when it comes to immigration enforcement.

That's why deportations have increased so much over the last twenty years, despite no substantial changes to the law. But it also means Congress has given the Department of Homeland Security a few tools to keep unauthorized immigrants from getting deported.

One of those is deferred action, which is the basis for the new executive action — as well as the DACA program for young unauthorized immigrants. Deferred action has been around for decadesto protect immigrants from deportation in particularly compelling cases.

Relief from deportation is usually granted on a case-by-case basis, but it's been granted to groups of people before — albeit to many fewer immigrants than Obama has.

Indiana Solar Bill Crafted By Utilities Sparks Outrage, Raises Costs

Large utilities and state legislators in Indiana have joined together to push for a bill that undermines state oversight of the electric utility industry and makes distributed and rooftop solar less appealing to consumers. HB 1320, proposed by state Rep. Eric Koch (R), would lower the amount of money solar customers get for selling excess power back to the grid while also allowing utilities to add a fixed monthly charge to solar users’ bills, as well as interconnection fees.

“This is clearly an attack by utilities on customers’ energy choices in an attempt to restrict the freedom of individuals to lower their power bills,

there are only about 500 solar customers in Indiana and that this is a “concerted effort to quash the industry” before it gets on its feet.

In Indiana, switching from the retail rate to the avoided cost rate could cut the amount solar producers earn by as much as 60 to 70 percent.

Texas Republican Knows Teachers Need To Do A Little Killing Sometimes, For The Kids

Texas state Rep. Dan Flynn (R-No duh) has introduced the illiterately named Teacher’s [sic] Protection Act, though no word yet on who that single teacher is exactly.

The bill would authorize teachers — who, unless you forgot, are already authorized to carry loaded guns in Texas classrooms — to use “force or deadly force on school property, on a school bus, or at a school-sponsored event in defense of the educator’s person or in defense of students of the school that employs the educator.”

Basically, if you feel like you or one of your students is threatened, you have the right to be judge, jury, and executioner, and all for the low low price of a bachelor’s degree!

No for real: Texas law only requires that a prospective teacher have a bachelor’s degree in the field they wish to teach, whether or not they have any formal teaching education.

Who knew it was so easy to score a license to kill?
You may remember Texas as a teacher’s paradise, and with good reason.

The state is one of the few in the nation that gives teachers the choice to teach that the Bible is the 100% inerrant word of God, or that the Bible just helped to write the Cons ution.

So freedom! Thus it makes sense that Texas would only fuel inject the amount of Freedom™ Texas teachers have by letting them get away with stone cold murder.

This isn’t the first time Flynn’s wanted to squirt even more Freedom™ over the Second Amendment.

    He previously

pushed to let people bring guns on college campuses,

successfully cut the required training hours for a concealed handgun license by as much as two-thirds, and

removed that pesky provision in the law that required people to take a class and prove they could actually still use a handgun before they renewed their concealed handgun license.

That burdensome “learning” requirement was instead replaced with a pamphlet on gun safety that they would have to sign, and that’s all. Gun training in Texas operates on the same principle as the Apple Terms and Conditions. Responsible gun ownership in action!

Perhaps in one of the more Kochian passages of Flynn’s bill, teachers could also use deadly force “in defense of property of the school that employs the educator.”

So if you catch somebody breaking open a school vending machine just to get the candy like a freaking Degrassi villain, get ready to lock and load. Objects are officially worth more than people, yeehaw!

    Futhermore, “
civil immunity would be granted to those who use deadly force, meaning they would not be liable for the injury or death of student [sic].”

Now hold up just a minute there, pardner. Who said anything about shooting students? Despite much national headlining to the contrary, the bill does not give teachers the right to murder their students. That would just be cartoonishly evil.

Congress bumpkin Flynn added in a helpful addendum to the bill specifying “use of force, but not deadly force, against a (student) is justified,” which is crystal clear and can’t be misinterpreted at all, just like those Stand Your Ground laws.

Texas May Slash Cancer Screenings For Low-Income Women

After passing some of the most sweeping anti-abortion measures in the country and effectively defunding Planned Parenthood, anti-choice lawmakers in the Lone Star State aren’t done yet.

This week, the Texas Senate filed a draft budget that would restructure the state’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening program to prevent Planned Parenthood from participating. Abortion opponents have been pushing for the change as a way of continuing to target the national women’s health organization, in an ongoing crusade to cut off funds from abortion providers.

West Virginia Legislation Would Criminalize Teaching Social Problems First

Legislation was introduced this week in the West Virginia House of Delegates (HB 2107) that would prohibit the teaching of “social problems, economics, foreign affairs, the United Nations, world government, socialism or communism until basic courses in American state and local geography and history are completed.”

How In the World Did This Man Raise $12 Million to Draft Ben Carson?

Dr. Ben Carson, the neurosurgeon, author, tea party hero, and Stuck On You star, is contemplating a presidential bid in 2016. He's being cheered on by conservative activists—and by the National Draft Ben Carson for President Committee, a super PAC founded in 2013 to urge Carson to run. The PAC sends out emails touting Carson, gathers signatures for pe ions aimed at coaxing him into the race, and it raises money from conservatives enthralled with the prospect of a Carson presidency. A lot of money.

According to Federal Election Commission filings, the Draft Carson PAC has raised an impressive $12.2 million since its founding—slightly more than Ready for Hillary, the pro-Hillary Clinton super PAC.

Draft Carson has, in fact, done very little besides fundraise.

The guy responsible for collecting and managing Draft Carson's huge haul is Vernon Robinson, the PAC's political director and a notorious, perennial candidate with a history of rabid anti-immigrant rhetoric.

An African-American, ex-Air Force officer from North Carolina, Robinson has repeatedly run unsuccessful campaigns for Congress. He calls himself "the black Jesse Helms" — a comparison the director of the late senator's foundation declared "sad." His congressional campaign ads—one of which characterized undo ented immigrants as flag-burners and sex offenders—are so out-there that political science professors use them to illustrate mudslinging at its dirtiest.

In 2006, a Republican running against Robinson in a House primary said that he "scares me." But win or (almost always) lose, the common thread in his political career has been remarkable fundraising success, with a big chunk of the proceeds Robinson has raised flowing to a small camp of conservative fundraisers, and sometimes, himself.

the REAL IRS scandal, and it's a 100% REPUG scandal

A Tax Cut For Tax Cheats

If the most frequently dialed federal agency in America can’t even answer two-thirds of the millions of phone calls it gets, should the government cut its budget?

Congress thinks so. That agency is the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). And lawmakers have hacked at its budget yet again.

Worse still, those cuts will cost more money than they’ll save. They’re basically “a tax cut to tax cheats,” said IRS commissioner John Koskinen.

Regardless of your feelings about the IRS, Koskinen is right.

The government has slashed the enforcement portion of the IRS budget by nearly 20 percent over the last five years. That’s forcing the IRS to shrink the number of employees working on enforcement by 15 percent.

Talk about being penny wise and pound foolish. For every dollar the IRS spent in 2013, it collected $255, according to National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson.

“It is difficult to see how the CEO would keep his job if he chose not to provide the department with the funding it needed,” Olson said.

Yet, she noted, “that is essentially what has been happening with respect to IRS funding.” Congress has slashed the IRS budget four times in five years. And those cuts are feeding the budget deficit that conservatives supposedly fret about.

It’s all about political expedience. Remember when the IRS faced accusations of singling out conservative nonprofits for tax scrutiny? Along with other experts, I predicted that it would spur further IRS budget cuts. Now Republican lawmakers are taking their revenge.

The Republican Party is fundraising on the promise of abolishing the IRS altogether, as Citizens for Tax Justice reports
    .

Bobby Jindal Says Education Vital To Democracy As He Cuts Hundreds Of Millions From Schools

Louisiana Governor and likely presidential candidate Bobby Jindal told a conservative audience in DC on Wednesday that public education is a fundamental pillar of American democracy.

“Why is it important to fund and support public education?” he asked the attendees of the American Principles Project’s conference. “Because if we want to keep the republic we have, our republic can only be as good as our citizens. So we need an educated population with critical thinking skills. We need to train citizens to be responsible, functioning adults. I always hear from parents, from the Chamber of Commerce, from business groups that we’ve got to fund education.”

But Jindal, whose mother studied at Louisiana State University after immigrating from India, is currently trying to cut the budget of the state colleges by as much as $300 million — nearly a third of the system’s current budget.

Republican Lawmaker Not Sure Sex With Unconscious People Really Is Rape

Utah State Representative Brian Greene, while considering a bill that would ensure unconscious victims are protected under the legal definition of sexual assault, expressed a few concerns. Namely, his belief that there are special cases in which having sex with someone who is out cold might not really be rape.

“I hope this wouldn’t happen, but this opens to door to it,” Greene begins in a video of the hearing. “An individual has sex with their wife while she is unconscious—or he, if that’s possible, I don’t know—a prosecutor could then charge that spouse with rape.”

Yes, indeed, a prosecutor could! Because that is literally and precisely how rape works.

should you pass out in the company of a lover or spouse—or an ex, even—with whom you've previously had sex, it’s pretty much impossible to be raped. What’s that? You were literally too incapacitated to possibly be able to give consent? Greene still isn’t sure that qualifies as “rape" rape.

Ted Nugent: Sarah Palin The 'Perfect Example' Of Founding Fathers' Vision

“She is my hero,” Nugent said of the former half-term Alaska governor. “Sarah Palin is the perfect example of what our Founding Fathers envisioned for an experiment in self-government.”

Nugent was especially impressed by Palin’s decision to resign midway through her first term as governor: “She quit because the left hate machine was so overwhelming her with frivolous litigation that she did the most courageous thing in the world and she handed her governor duties to the lieutenant governor while she was taking on this hate onslaught of the left so that Alaska would be properly served by someone who could pay attention to the responsibilities of the office of government while she was fighting off the leftist mongrels. She’s my hero.”

After plugging Palin’s new TV show, Nugent gushed that she is “an amazing American and she brings forth so much good that the general media would not bring forth, she’s a reminder that the heart and soul of working-hard, playing-hard, being-the-best-that-you-can-be America is alive and well.”
