Hegseth is dumb as dirt, he is hurting US troops

A flu outbreak at the Air Force's basic training hub in San Antonio is worsening, according to two sources familiar with the situation.

As of Tuesday, at least 222 recruits at Lackland Air Force Base, part of Joint Base San Antonio, had been diagnosed with the flu and four had been hospitalized, the two people familiar with the matter told ABC News.

This marks a sharp increase from the 159 cases and two hospitalizations reported last week.

Hegseth continues to purge US armed forces commanders with no reason given

The top US army officer in Europe will retire early from the military after becoming the latest victim of defence secretary Pete Hegseth’s purge of senior officers in the armed services.General CD Donahue, a widely respected special forces veteran who has been critical to US efforts to help Ukraine fight Russia, will announce his retirement on Wednesday, according to people familiar with the situation.

Lackland may run out of flu jabs

The US military is racing to vaccinate new recruits after a two-month halt on mandatory flu shots – but it’s a temporary reprieve, as the shots will soon expire and new doses will not be available for months.

Officials will need to lean on other prevention measures to contain the growing flu outbreak at Lackland air force base in San Antonio, Texas, experts say.

The flu vaccines now being deployed across military basic training camps are set to expire on 30 June, and new doses will not arrive until August or later.

It’s possible military leaders will extend use of the vaccines beyond their expiration date, but that’s “unlikely”, said Toti Sanchez, the former deputy chief at the armed forces health surveillance division of the US Defense Health Agency. And stock of the vaccine is typically low at this time of year as manufacturers switch to making the next season’s doses.

when the government abuses and deceives courts, the presumption it is acting lawfully can be overcome

    NYT v DOD

In Round 3 of NYTimes v. DOD, over Sec. Hegseth's attempt to curtail press coverage at the Pentagon, Hegseth loses yet again.

On the question of presumption of regularity, the district court again relies, in part, on DOD officials' poasting and boasting.

    Hegseth hates the free press

A federal judge has blocked the Pentagon from enforcing a policy requiring credentialed journalists to be escorted inside its headquarters, ruling that the restriction likely violates the First Amendment. U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman granted a preliminary injunction Tuesday barring enforcement of the escort policy while a lawsuit filed by The New York Times moves forward. It marks the latest development in an ongoing legal fight over Pentagon press access. “Those who drafted the First Amendment believed that the nation’s security requires a free press and an informed people and that such security is endangered by governmental suppression of political speech,” Friedman wrote in his opinion.

I wonder where Hegseth got the idea that he could freelance US force posture -- fleeting conversation with Trump, maybe?

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was planning to head to Brussels last month to deliver what would be a bombs announcement in a meeting with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s top military chiefs.

The U.S., he planned to say, was preparing additional cuts to its forces in Europe that would go beyond the canceled deployment of an armored brigade to Poland and the earlier withdrawal of an infantry brigade from Romania, people familiar with the matter said. But Hegseth’s proposal was nixed after it was shared with Marco Rubio—President Trump’s national-security adviser—and other senior officials, the people said.

...The official line remains the same: The 10-month campaign of strikes on small boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific has nearly stopped the flow of drugs by sea into the United States. In December, President Trump boasted about a 92 percent drop in seaborne shipments. Last month, in an apparent sign of further progress, he said the decline was up to 97.2 percent.

But government officials and agencies closest to the action, at sea and on America’s streets, tell a different story. In hearings, official reports, and interviews they have all but given up the pretense that the campaign has succeeded in reducing the flow of drugs into the U.S., even as 221 people have been killed in more than 60 strikes.....

    "maximum lethality, not tepid legality"

Messages indicating the intelligence was based on years-old intelligence that needed to be re-vetted were embedded in a system used for developing targets and required a senior officer to approve adding a site to the strike list, according to the sources.

Hegseth seems to be demoralizing his command

Military experts and current and former senior ranking military officials called Widmar’s early retirement from such a vaunted post a marked departure from military precedent and said it was especially concerning as part of a pattern of well-respected senior leadership exiting under Hegseth with little explanation. Uniformed military leadership, particularly legal advisers, generally remain in place across administrations to preserve the military’s commitment to nonpartisan professionalism.

“That is centuries of high-priced talent that are being cashiered without any explanation for why their service was untenable,” said Kori Schake, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Ins ute, a nonpartisan Washington, D.C.-based think tank. “It creates a command climate in which people are hesitant to take initiative. And that’s how countries lose wars.”

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. Dan Caine, said in a statement that Widmar “is deeply respected and admired by all” and thanked him for his “remarkable” service. “We will miss his legal counsel, incredible expertise and experience, and his understanding of our responsibility to always speak truth to power.”

The Pentagon did not respond to a request for comment from Hegseth.

chicken grooming regulations to force black soldiers out

Pete Hegseth is a straight up bigot

Sailors with shaving-related conditions will get one year of medical treatment to meet the Navy’s clean-shaven face standard or they will be removed from the service, according to new guidance. The Navy will no longer issue permanent shaving waivers to sailors who suffer from skin conditions caused by shaving, including pseudofolliculitis barbae, according to a Navy memorandum published this week.

The updated policy brings the service into line with guidance issued last year by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth banning most shaving accommodations for service members. The Navy’s July directive instructs all sailors with skin irritation or other conditions caused by shaving — including those with current medical shaving waivers — to report the issue to their supervisors and seek medical evaluation.

If recommended for treatment, their commanding officer may issue a temporary shaving waiver, allowing them to maintain a beard up to ¼ inch in length. Commanders may grant temporary waivers for up to 90 days, according to the guidance. Those waivers must “align with prescribed treatment.” Commanders may only grant a 90-day shaving waiver four times before they must recommend a sailor for administrative separation. Sailors who cannot meet shaving standards after one year of treatment shall be deemed to have “an unmanageable permanent condition” and recommended for “separation due to failure to comply with grooming standards,” according to the memo.

“The operational success of the U.S. Navy demands the readiness of all sailors. Mission accomplishment hinges on stringent compliance with standards and ensuring implementing policies are clear, unambiguous, and compliant with law and regulation,” the memo reads. “Grooming standards add to sailor and mission safety and ensure the safe and proper utilization of protective equipment in all naval environments and operational conditions.” The policy says the Navy will not grant temporary medical shaving waivers to recruits or others entering or reentering the service.

Pseudofolliculitis barbae, commonly known as razor bumps, is a condition that can cause a person to experience painful inflammation after shaving. The condition disproportionately affects Black men, some 60% of whom may experience it, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.
