They are going to pay him less than they originally offered.
According to Buster Olney, he's getting the same deal they offered him before minus $24 mil the Rangers were paying him. The Steinbrenners wanted the discount and ARod gave in.

I think it is important to make sure that children watching a sport, any sport, are getting the right messages and learning from a positive example.
I also think, however, that it would be near impossible to ever make 100% sure that there wasn't some form of cheating and/or unfair advantage taking place amongst various participants.
So, go after a high profile rule breaker, make it look like you're trying to clean up the problem, and everyone's happy. Simple as that.
No, can we please get back to discussing the important things in life like boobs and the comedic value of mentally challenged people?
