    Indiana defeats Miami 95-84

    By Marc D'Amico | July 9, 2008

The Indiana Pacers defeated the Miami Heat 95-84 Wednesday night in the final game of day three at the Orlando Pro Summer League.

The Pacers were the epitome of team throughout the contest, assisting on 17 of their 26 made field goals. They also had five players finish in double figures, led by Shawne Williams' 25 and Josh Davis' 19.

Mario Chalmers continued his strong play in the first quarter of the match-up, scoring 10 points in the period on only two field goal attempts. He made all seven free throws he took, capitalizing for the third straight game on his offensive aggressiveness.

Six players scored in the first quarter for the Pacers but they still trailed 25-19 after the first 10 minutes.

Midway through the second quarter, the Pacers pulled to within a bucket after two free throws by Shawne Williams. With nine players registering in the scoring column, Indiana didn’t need any big performers to stay in the game. Andre Emmett led the Pacer charge with nine points.

Michael Beasley’s offensive struggles continued for the third consecutive half, as he shot just 2-for-6 from the field. He also picked up three fouls in the first 20 minutes.

With both teams shooting poorly in the half, free throws were the difference. Chalmers hit the next four he took and was helped out by Kasib Powell, who added six points for the Heat. Heading into the locker room, Miami led 42-41.

Indiana came out firing in the second half, going on a 12-2 run to start the period and took a 53-44 lead. Their unselfish play sent them into the final period with a six point advantage, 70-64. At the end of the third quarter, four of the five starters for Indiana had 12 or more points, led by Shawne Williams’ 15.

The third quarter also saw Beasley turn his game around. He scored seven points and grabbed two rebounds, going 2-for-4 from the field.

Williams got hot to begin the final stanza for the Pacers, dropping 11 points in the first five minutes. He got help from Josh Davis, who also pitched in six points in that time frame. With 4:56 remaining in the game, the Indiana led 84-74.

The Heat pulled within six after Beasley found Stephane Lasme on the baseline for a wide open dunk. The Pacers quickly responded with a quick layup followed by two free throws by Stephen Graham. Those four points pushed the lead back to 10, and the Pacers never looked back.

After a final bucket by Beasley, Indiana dribbled out that last 20 seconds of the clock, wrapping up the victory.

The Heat were led by Mario Chalmers' 23 points and six assists, but he also committed seven turnovers and seven fouls. Beasley finished with 17 points and eight rebounds, with four turnovers and five fouls. Kasib Powell contributed a double-double for Miami, notching 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Both teams are back in action tomorrow for day four in Orlando, when Indiana faces the Magic at 5 pm and Miami takes on Oklahoma City in the 7 pm nightcap,
