Kleiza was so wide open. Argentina needs to get their heads in the games, they played rather sloppy for most of the game.

Argentina should not lose a game like this. It was a combination of Lithuania playing with great energy, and the Argentinian team playing about the worst basketball I have ever seen. No point guard is going to be hard to overcome.

I really thought that that Argentina was going to get over the hump, especially once they grabbed the lead earlier, but wow

Not just because he hit that shot, but I thought the Spurs could use a Kleiza type player. I know the Nuggets are high on him, they would not give him up to get Artest last year.

    well that sucked.

manu and delfino both took some bad shots in the 4th. and dont even get me started on all the botched fastbreaks. we should have won this game.

can someone tell me why lithuania got the ball back after the go ahead 3? i saw a commentary-less transmission, and didnt see any reason for them to get the ball back.

there is still a long ways to go, and barring injury, we can only get better. at least the defense and rebounding were there for most of the game.

That's a very good question. Prigioni was an undersized SG in the argentinean league. He started to play point in Spain. I have no idea why he gets so many accolades in the ACB league, it's clear the guy is not a natural point guard, he's not very smart and he commits lots of turnovers.

To make it worse, the reserve PG is recovering from a knee surgery, so he's not even an option.

I'm pissed precisely because our basketball has a very long tradition of having good FIBA PGs. So bringing these pair to the olympics was ridiculous.

Olympic basketball champs Argentina lose opener

BEIJING (AP) -Manu Ginobli's 19 points wasn't enough as defending Olympic champion Argentina stumbled to a narrow 79-75 defeat to Lithuania in its opening Group A match on Sunday.

In what had been a tight game, the San Antonio Spurs' shooting guard and the rest of Argentina were nearly shut down in the third quarter as Lithuania ran to a 51-45 lead. Ginobli and Houston Rockets forward Luis Scola were restricted to just two points each in the period.

Argentina rallied and, with 2:40 left, Ginobli sunk a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to four points. Quickly regaining possession, Ginobli bounced a three-pointer off the rim that was buried by Toronto Raptors guard Carlos Delfino to make it a two-point game, and with less than 90 seconds left, his pass connected with Scola inside the paint for the layup to even the score.

But with 2.1 seconds left in regulation, Linas Kleiza nailed the three pointer and captain Ramunas Siskauskas drilled a free throw to pull off the four-point win, setting off celebrations among the raucous flag-waving Lithuanian cheering section.

Kleiza led scoring for Lithuania, which placed fourth at Athens 2004, with 13 points. Robertas Javtokas, a 2001 Spurs second round draft pick, added 12. Delfino scored 13 points for Argentina and Scola 10.

Argentina played very poorly in the first half. Delfino kept them in the game with his 10 points of their 30. Scola sucks. What exactly is his game? Spin around and throw up a wild shot. Ginobili didn't shoot the ball all that well but he had a nice second half.

Team USA better pay attention to this. I mean getting canon fodder China in their first game is nothing like having to play Argentina, Lithuania, Spain or Greece.
