    Agent speaks

    Associated Press
SALT LAKE CITY -- Karl Malone is retiring, ending a career in which he became one of the NBA's greatest power forwards and was No. 2 on the league's all-time scoring list.

    Malone

Malone, who teamed with guard John Stockton for 18 seasons with Utah to form one of the NBA's greatest duos, will announce his retirement Sunday, the Jazz said Friday.

Malone, who is 41 and underwent knee surgery last summer, is healthy and works out every day but has not played since last season with the Los Angeles Lakers. He joined the Lakers in an attempt to win an elusive NBA championship, but failed to do so despite playing with Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant.

Malone will announce his exit at a news conference at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City.

His agent, Dwight Manley, said Malone was "very serious" about returning to action with the San Antonio Spurs before he decided to retire.

"I can tell you he's given a tremendous amount of thought to this decision, but the specific details are best left to him to make on Sunday," Manley said.

The Jazz did not elaborate on the announcement. Speaking to reporters at the Delta Center before Friday's game against Minnesota, coach Jerry Sloan called Malone "a unique individual and I'm glad I got the opportunity to coach him."

Malone is the second-leading scorer in NBA history, 1,459 points behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He played 18 seasons for Utah before joining the Lakers for the 2003-04 season at a greatly reduced salary, saying he wanted to win a championship before retirement.

He missed 39 games last season after injuring his right knee, and was hurt again during the playoffs, missing the last three games of the NBA Finals, all of which the Lakers lost to the Detroit Pistons.

Lakers spokesman John Black said Malone's retirement was no surprise.

"We wish him and his family the best ever. We've had one year with him and everyone in the organization, from the front office staff, fellow players, coaches, everyone really enjoyed having Karl around for that year," Black said. "He was a real addition to our team last year in helping us get to the NBA playoffs."

Malone opted out of his $1.65 million contract after last season, making him a free agent. He and his family have homes in Newport Beach, Calif., and Salt Lake City.

Malone was a key factor in the Lakers' victories over the Spurs in last year's Western Conference semifinals and Minnesota in the conference finals.

Manley had said in October that his client wasn't ready to play but that if he returned, it would only be with the Lakers.

That changed late last year after Malone was accused by Kobe Bryant of making a pass at his wife. Malone, through Manley, denied the accusation and apologized to Bryant and his wife for any remarks she might have considered inappropriate.

Stockton, who with Malone formed the famed pick-and-roll tandem, retired after the 2002-03 season.

“We wish him well,” Spurs General Manager R.C. Buford told News 4 WOAI’s David Chancellor. “Sunday will be a great day for his family and the fans in Utah.”

    Well, .

Charles Barkley will be pleased. No longer the best player never to win a ring.

[We now return you go your regularly scheduled hatred of Karl Malone, already in progress]

I guess that's some consolation: I can go back to hating him like I have my entire basketball-watching life.

Would have been real nice to have him, though.

Here's hoping Mass, Marks, and Malik can get it done. Not a real intimidating bunch. Massenburg will get his chance in the playoffs, lets hope he's got a few vicious elbows left in him. We're going to need them.

    airjer, you need help.

Exactly how many times have the Jazz won it?

And that "just another team" is about as weak as Massenburg>Malone. You're talking to the best team in the league, with the record to prove it.

Where are the Jazz right now? I guess it's easy to talk about other teams choking in the playoffs when you don't have to worry about that happening to your team.

Can't choke from the 10th seed, can you?

This doesn't surprise me one bit. I had this feeling he wasn't going to come. He wanted a ring but would he be willing to become known as the hall of famer who became a 30 game mercenary to get a le after being a 1 season mercenary the year before and failing? His legacy is Utah and when the Lakers lost last season and when he couldn't make up his mind this season, all the indecisiveness was just too much for him to play for another team. And I feel that in his eyes, maybe it wouldn't have been such a "legitimate" le if he wasn't in some way leading the team to victory. He tried it once, and it failed. I don't think he wanted to have that possibility of failing again.

Malone, who teamed with Dennis Rodman for 18 matches with the WWE to form one of the WWE's greatest duos, will announce his retirement Sunday at the Delta Center, the WWE said Friday.

The 41-year-old Malone underwent knee surgery last summer and has not wrestled since last season with the WWE. He joined the wrestling league at a greatly reduced salary before last season in an attempt to win an elusive WWE championship by playing with The Big Show and The Rock. The WWE beat WCW for the wrestling championship in five matches.

The WWE had no comment Friday on the decision by Malone, whose agent said last week it was possible Malone might return to action with LMGHA(Little Mexican Girl Hunting Assoc.)

    The WWE was not surprised.

"We've had one year with him and everyone in the organization, from the front office staff, fellow players, coaches, everyone really enjoyed having Karl around for that year," WWE spokesman John Black said. "He was a real addition to our team last year in helping us get to the WWE championships."

Malone finishes his career 1,459 punchs behind Rick Flair on the WWE's career scoring list.

Last season, he missed 39 matches after injuring his right knee, and was hurt again during the championships, missing the last three matches of the WWE Finals.

Malone opted out of his $1.65 million contract following last season, making him a free agent. He and his family live in nearby Newport Beach, Calif. They also have a home in Salt Lake City.

His agent, Dwight Manley, said in October that his client wasn't ready to play, but if he returned, it would only be with the WWE.

That changed late last year after Malone was accused by The Rock of making a pass at The Rock's wife. Malone, through Manley, denied the accusation and apologized to The Rock and his wife for any remarks she might have considered inappropriate.

My feelings on Malone are pretty clear.

Zo or no Zo, I'm still more worried about Detroit than Miami.
