The time before the supposible one that sparked the beating, the Rodeo team hung a dipiction of a rivals mascot in one, after they won. A Mavrick if I remember right. It was simply a normal thing, but when the media got hold of the story, the lasso's became nooses.

Nooses a Signal to Black Students. An investigation by school officials, police, and an FBI agent revealed the true motivation behind the placing of two nooses in the tree the day after the assembly. According to the expulsion committee, the crudely constructed nooses were not aimed at black students. Instead, they were understood to be a prank by three white students aimed at their fellow white friends, members of the school rodeo team. (The students apparently got the idea from watching episodes of "Lonesome Dove.") The committee further concluded that the three young teens had no knowledge that nooses symbolize the terrible legacy of the lynchings of countless blacks in American history.

I certainly believe it was a misunderstanding born of ignorance, but these weren't celebratory lassos. Nobody does that.

Wihin that thread, I linked some articles that factually addressed the lasso's. The time before the 'lasso' in the tree, they hung a Mustang, an opposing team mascot. Now I wonder if it was actually hung, or just tied to the so-called "White Tree?" Naturally, they would hang without something in them, right?

Is it a clinical condition that none of the far-right members of this board seem to understand how to compare apples to apples, or is there something in the water in certain parts of Texas?

There is a huge difference between this incident and the other two. Two of them are actual crimes and one is not. In order for something to be categorized as a hate crime it has to be a crime in the first place. Hanging something on your own property is not a crime. Hanging something on property that doesn't belong to you is vandalization and is a crime.

I'm not in the habit of demanding justice when there hasn't been an actual crime committed. But maybe I'm just too busy ing myself.

My personal feeling on hate crime legislation is that it should apply only to minority groups who are denied rights under current law, but that is not my call. Obviously, most crimes of an incendiary nature run the risk of igniting the kinds of public tension that hate crime legislation is intended to help quell. I fully expect that once gays are finally fully recognized by the state hate crime legislation will be phased out, largely because the social threat of rioting, etc by an oppressed minority will no longer need to be appeased.
