"Actually, I started to hate AJ after his head swelled to 10 times it's size after the 99 championship. Being the Mavs head coach just makes the hate sweeter. In no way should AJ (the J stands for journeyman) have his jersey retired by the Spurs."
I just have to respond to this post because I totally agree with it. I completely understand. AJ was (to me, so I can't claim to represent all fans) a grandstander. He was efficient as the Spurs' PG, but not the greatest PG that ever played the game. His voice annoys me - that terrible whine, twang, or whatever... Do I miss AJ? No! Not for a minute! Do I want him to be a winning coach of the Mavs? Are you nuts???!!!!
Just because he once played for the Spurs doesn't mean that we are forever forced to be his greatest fans. Antonio Daniels went, Darrell Anderson went, Jason Hart went...we could keep naming Spurs we loved who are now playing for other teams. What if we kept on championing those ex-Spurs who have their heads screwed on right - that is, all out to win.
Get real, you guys! AJ can broadcast his love for San Antonio until the cows come home. But, where is he? In Dallas! He's an okay guy, but not the most important PG we've ever had or will ever have.
I'm just one of those people who loved AJ when he was a Spur, but couldn't care less about him now that he's with the Mavericks.

There is definitely some high quality AJ hate in this thread and it warms my heart.

You guys that know the truth...keep on keepin on! But watch out for AJ fans...they can get kinda mean.

We may have to watch that unworthy jersey disgrace the franchise...but that doesn't mean we have to like it!

    Keep spreading the word!

GoSpurs, regardless of what differences we have over Barry...if you are an AJ hater you are a good poster in my book....Good job brah!

To my fellow enlightened AJ haters...

Response # 1 that you give to someone who pulls the lame "but AJ hit the shot to win us a le" card...be sure and point out to them that he hit that shot with 50 seconds remaining, in a series we were up 3-1 on an 8 seed.

Response # 2 that you give is...Stephen Jackson. He hit the shot that put us ahead for good when we won the 03 le. That's right...a career journeyman, in his first season as a starter, equalled AJ's crowning glory. I guess that means we need to retire SJax's jersey as well.

Response # 3 is another name...Manu Ginobili....yes, the same guy that wasn't good enough to wear AJ's jersey...the same guy of whom classy AJ said, "let him make his own number" after learning of the team ripping Manu's jersey from him...

Manu hit the final shots in our 03 le...actually he hit the final 4 or 5....A rookie, "not good enough" to wear AJ's jersey, also equalling AJ's career crowning glory...and making AJ eat his own scrub words in the process...as a rookie...LOL!

AJ did one thing well...he nutrode. He might even be the greatest nutrider in NBA history, but he should never be confused with someone who helped make it easier to win a le. He was something that had to be overcome. And even the great Duncan and Robinson could only do that once. Thank god we didn't play a team that forced AJ to shoot...like Utah...or we'd have never won that first le.

The only credit AJ should get for that le is getting Mario Elie to sign with the Spurs...and I think AJ should be rewarded for that...he should get a front row seat at Mario's( a real Spur who never badmouthed the franchise or it's players) jersey retirement, if that should ever happen, and that's the closest he should ever get to having his jersey retired.
