It's not irrelevant. Teams like the Devil Rays, Orioles, and Blue Jays have to fill the majority of their holes internally AND hope to catch the Yanks or Red Sox in a down year in order to have a hope at a postseason.

It's impossible to compete with those payrolls year in and year out. You have to everything right and hope that they're down at the same time.

Blame the system not the Yankees. It's not their fault that it is set up so that if you have mega revenue, with attendance and TV networks that you can have a huge payroll if you choose too, as long as you pay the luxory tax.. And there are too many damn cheap ass owners in baseball that refuse to spend and take a risk to win and bring fans back.

I do blame the system. (although it should be noted that the Yanks fight any changes to the system tooth & nail.)
