I read a while back that Avery said that Derrick Favors reminded him of Tim Duncan.
Johnson's been talking Favors up a lot.

...But I cannot minimize what he said about Derrick Favors during today’s lunch with beat reporters. Last week, Johnson went into a room with his bosses at a Board of Directors meeting. He presented them a video that compared Favors to old footage of Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan, demonstrating they all had similar moves at Favors’ age (19). By doing this, of course, Johnson basically told board members that Favors is the future of this team.
    http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/net...bref=obnetwork

Johnson said that he wants Harris to be the engine that runs the team and he noted that Favors shows the potential at 19-years-old that Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett showed at the same age.

If this trade happens, might Travis Outlaw be expendable in NJ?
And possibly available as a backup 3 for the Spurs? Hypothetical trade deadline pickup?
    hmmmm........

Apparently NJ would also get DJ Agustin back.

Very nice trade for NJ if they got Mello AND Agustin..
True, but they'd be giving up the #3 overall pick (Favors), two future first rounders, and Devin Harris. Almost any trade where you get Carmelo is a good trade, but it's not exactly a pittance.

Favors is really raw, the two first rounders are 0 guarantee.

Getting a super star and a solid PG for 3 draft picks and Devin Harris is a damn damn good trade.

Right now it would be great if the Spurs could get in on the Nuggets rebuilding process. Players like Birdman, Al Harrington, Billups, K mart, Nene, maybe JR, will all be on the trading block for cheap. When Melo leaves, so will Billups.

    Al Harrington? KMart!?!? yuck.

Birdman, maybe, but that contract for his output, meh.

    Nene, again no thanks.

Until the Spurs get to know what they have in Anderson and Neal, there are no expandable players. Parker can't be replaced by Hill at PG, because Hill doesn't pass the ball at all and Parker is more consistent scorer in the playoffs. RJ can't even be traded till mid season and he doesn't have a backup. Bonner either can't be traded, and if the Spurs were to trade him mid-season they wouldn't be able to play 4 down anymore except with RJ at PF, since no other big has 3 point range. Hill can't be traded because he's the Spurs best perimeter defensive player. And so on.

It would make sense to make some trade for Melo, because he could be the next Spurs franchise player, but otherwise it's better to keep this group together and try win a le in the two seasons that Duncan is under contract, also to keep the draft picks for rebuilding (the Spurs are adding fine rookies since some time). Since Melo wont join the Spurs, why bother with the trade and create disorder?

The Spurs need a wing defender, that could be Devin Brown that has good familiarity with the systems Spurs used some seasons ago. Otherwise there is a hope that some defensive player gets cut mid season. If nothing happens, Hill and RJ will have to play better defense than last season.

Only with fandom, he didn't do anything against the organization.

Doesn't matter - Charlotte will get him if the deal happens.

Actually, just the opposite. Most of the fans still like Devin. It's the organization that had enough. I know the first time he was cut, in 2002-2003, it was for habitual lateness to practices, etc. Cost him a ring.

Doesn't matter though. That ship has sailed. Isn't he like 30 something now? Besides, people here would complain that he's only 6'5".

Birdman is an idiot. Most of the Thuggets are worthless. I would take Nene in a heartbeat though.

Too bad we cant get in on the action and weasel Damion James away from NJ...not sure what we would have to give up, but James would be a great backup to RJ.

?? James was available. If the Spurs wanted him, they would have acquired him, either at #20 or by trading down.

With Amare and Anthony out East, the forward spot in the Allstar game gets easier. There will only be Duncan and Dirk. Duncan's streak as a starter is surely to continue.

NJ will be in Brooklyn in about 2 years, so he gets his trip to NY eventually. Going to the Knicks would be bad for him, basketball-wise, because they don't have much talent beyond Amare, and what there is would be pillaged in any trade. Their cupboard is pretty bare.

I don't think that Amare alongside Melo would work without frictions. (basketball-wise)
Lopez on the other hand would be a pretty good fit IMO.

Nets trade for ‘Melo nears crossroads

By Adrian Wojnarowski and Marc J. Spears, Yahoo! Sports

As Carmelo Anthony(notes) implored Denver management to keep exploring deals that would land him with the New York Knicks, the blockbuster trade that would’ve sent the All-Star forward to the New Jersey Nets has reached a perilous crossroads, league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Saturday night.

Anthony’s willingness to accept a contract extension with the Nets has begun to deteriorate over the weekend, and sources said at least some part of his uneasiness has come from conversations with former Nets players around the league. Despite the Nets’ new ownership and a new arena, Anthony has been regaled with tales of empty seats, fan apathy and second-class citizenship in the shadows of the Knicks and Madison Square Garden. Already, he had been uneager about joining a team that wasn’t close to contention.

“He’s having second thoughts on Jersey,” one league source said. “He’s pushed [Denver] to explore other options.”

The Nuggets believe the deal with New Jersey gives them maximum value for Anthony, but they still engaged the Knicks on Saturday in discussions that included Danilo Gallinari(notes), Anthony Randolph(notes) and Toney Douglas(notes), sources said. The Knicks were working to pry draft picks to use in a deal for Anthony, and sources said they had talks with the Houston Rockets, who obtained New York’s 2012 first-rounder to clear cap space in a February deadline deal.

Meanwhile, the three teams – New Jersey, Charlotte and Utah – that had come to a tentative agreement on the trade were rapidly losing patience with Denver’s front office. After believing they had the parameters of a trade in place Friday, several executives were frustrated with the way the Nuggets were leveraging them to find a better deal. There still are several Nuggets voices in the process, and there’s confusion from other teams about who is truly authorizing deals and making decisions, sources said.

Felton is a very solid player. Gallinari is a very talented player. Randolph/Azubuike/Chandler are all solid. Sure, they will have to have depth to be a true contender, but Felton/Melo/Amare is pretty damn good talent wise in the East.

Go back and re-read my post. NY has no picks to trade, so that talent that you mentioned will be going out the door. It will be Amare, Melo, and the d-league.

That trio will never happen. Parker isn't signing for the MLE, and the Knicks don't have the pieces to do ONE of those trades, let along two of them.
