Your irresponsible diet choices affect elbamba's bottom line. He seems to be calling for a government thin-tervention.

To be honest, can't say I've met too many. The commercials sure are good at shock value, that's for sure.

    Check some of these out:

I don't know about going physco on people like that for their fix but their face turns like that though after years of steady using.

The latest study, published March 28 in "Nature Neuroscience," likened the affects of high-fat, high-calorie fast food to those of cocaine or heroin, in animals at least.

The researchers showed that the pleasure-center in rats brains were overstimulated from the fast food similar to an addict's cocaine binge. Eventually, the pleasure centers became so overloaded that rats needed more and more food to feel normal, according to Paul H. Kenny, an associate professor of molecular therapeutics at the Scripps Research Ins ute.

Throughout the study, Kenny and his co-author studied three groups of lab rats for 40 days. The first group ate healthy food. The second ate a limited amount of junk food. The third group, however, was allowed to gorge on high-fat, high-calorie foods and became obese.

The startling side effect? The brains of the obese rats changed.

"The body adapts remarkably well to change -- and that's the problem," Kenny said in a press release. "When the animal overstimulates its brain pleasure centers with highly palatable food, the systems adapt by decreasing their activity. However, now the animal requires constant stimulation from palatable food to avoid entering a persistent state of negative reward".
During the study, the rats lost complete control over the ability to regulate whether they were hungry, often eating despite electric shocks. When the obese rats were put on a healthy diet, they refused to eat, starving themselves for two weeks.

For those individuals/families that can actually afford to live eating fast food, sure.

Wow, did not know that, crazy stuff.

And there's a series of those types of commercials; one stars a kid getting beat up in an alley and musing about how he wishes he was robbed, beat up, etc etc instead of making it to the party where he tried meth for the first time.

I'd say they definitely send a strong message. I thought it was a bit hyperbolic, but if you're saying it isn't, that makes the message somewhat stronger among those who've seen the results firsthand.

I'd say the study is a bit misleading... after all, various activities can activate a pleasure center in the brain and technically have the same results.

That whole "obese rats starving themselves" thing is quite interesting though.

If you want to "reboot" your taste buds, you can always go on a "water diet" for three days or so, and let your body go into ketosis temporarily. (Note: It takes away some muscle mass before it starts kicking into fat-burning mode.) If you go back to sugar immediately, it tends to taste way too sweet.

Hey, if people want to spend money to scare kids off fast food, that's fine with me. Free market and all that. Neuroresearch has certainly given us a lot of interesting insights into the human mind and how it works, and nearly demolished the idea that rationality is the major driving factor of why people do what they do.

FWIW: SF wants to ban toys from Happy Meals if it doesn't offer healthier choices

    Happy Meal ban
Proposal wouuld not allow toys unless more fruits, vegetables included
    advertisement | ad info

    updated 41 minutes ago

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco lawmakers have given preliminary approval to a law that would prohibit fast-food restaurants from putting toys in children's meals unless they include fruits and vegetables and don't have too many unhealthy calories.
A committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted 3-0 Monday to pass the proposed ordinance on to the full board. Santa Clara County supervisors adopted a similar law in April that banned all fast-food freebies.
Story: In activist S.F., McDonald's Happy Meal is latest target
Several doctors testified in favor of the San Francisco law. One recalled seeing children in hospital waiting rooms carrying McDonald's Happy Meals.
Under Supervisor Eric Mar's proposal, McDonald's and other restaurants could only include toys in meals that have a half-cup each of fruit and vegetables and limited amounts of sugar, sodium and fat.

Umm yeah. It's bacon and ranch. Bacon is the tastiest meat their is, and the worst their is. Ranch on the other hand, well the really easy rule is to stay away from white sauces.

Its amazing how you just proved that hamburgers are healthier than salads.

Also, who was seeking to ban hamburgers that you're so worried about the nanny state?

not sure where you're getting that from. i've done some cataloging for the brain mapping project and some work over at TNI as well and i am not aware of any universal acceptance of such a premise within the field. there are certainly schools of thought that advocate such a belief but there are just as many that do not. if anything; neuroscience, epistemology, cognitive science and studies on consciousness are just now getting their feet on the ground. there is a lot more ground to cover.

no idea where you pulled those numbers.

    McDonald's little hamburger: 250 calories

    McDonald's small fries: 230 calories

    250+230=480 calories
