I don't agree with the reviewer on the alien part, because I didn't care whether it got away or not, but I do agree that Abrams did not successfully combine the two storylines.

I don't see why the necessarily should have been combined more and in fact that is exactly why this wasn't ET redone. There were parallels and obviously the whole story happens because the alien is there but I don't understand why not having the alien and the kids skip hand in hand and revive some plants somehow takes away from the movie at all.

Its cool if the reviewer or others think that the movie was less of a movie because it wasn't more ET and that is a total opinion thing. What I take issue with is the insane amount of plot errors in that review.

Ebert touches on some of the same things:

During the first hour of "Super 8," I was elated by how good it was. It was like seeing a lost early Spielberg classic. Then something started to slip. The key relationship of Alice and her troubled father Louis (Ron Eldard) went through an arbitrary U-turn. Joe's own father seemed to sway with the requirements of the plot. The presentation of the threat was done with obscure and unconvincing special effects. We want the human stories and the danger to mesh perfectly, and they seem to slip past one another.

I think that's completely fair. I didn't want anymore of that, but people want different things. Too bad all the bull the review you linked had to get wrong was used to support that view.
