They already said that ain't happening. We'll still fight; we just won't get paid for it. How that works, I have no idea.

I like how the Democrats finally decided they weren't going to cave on some thing, and it involves me getting paid.
    Don't count your chickens yet.

The president's party had plenty of time to come up with a budget for this year, way back when they were in control of the exec and legislative branch (aka a couple of months ago). Yet another political cluster brought on by spineless politicians more focused on getting reelected rather than actually serving their fellow citizens.
    You're ing joking right?

Apparently MB thinks the GOP would just stand by and let the democrats pass a budget in a lame duck session.

Someone introduce him to the filibuster please.

Manny, this line from that article is priceless:

Sure, they're an all-volunteer military, but they didn't think Congress would take that literally.

About the filibuster - I'm an idiot and I just realized you can't filibuster the budget. That being said, the idea that they would have been able to ram through a budget in a lame duck session is still a load of and would only serve to put this situation off a year even if they could manage to get a straight party line vote (with the blue dogs thats impossible).

The notion that the House, Senate, and President can't sit down and find 60 Billion of cuts out of a multi trillion dollar budget is absolutely obscene.
Its not just about cuts. That should be obvious by now. The GOP wants to cut programs they don't like and are avoiding military cuts like the plague and they refuse to consider any tax raises at all. Obama has spent the first part of this year bending over and yet that still hasn't been enough for the GOP. At some point you eventually stop putting up with the bull and fight back.

    The GOP pushed too hard.

    Check it out WC:

    http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news...ess-still-will

Now there are "essential" and "non-essential" personnel. Nearly all military will be deemed "essential", which means we're still working, just not getting any pay. "Non-essential" will be asked to stay home, I guess.
I don't buy the contents of the article.

I will assume that the senate bill was for show only. Congressional checks would more likely not arrive than military checks with, or without the bill.

Can you show me a provision that automatically pays congress in the event of a shutdown? I didn't think so.

    Someone is scaremongering I think.

Has anyone here asked their representative in congress, or the senate?

FWIW, Obama threatened a veto on the proposed "Fund troops" bill coming through. While I obviously would like to be paid, I understand why he would call for a veto. The whole "military not getting paid" thing is a big issue, and he doesn't want the Republicans to have an easy out by looking like the guys who made sure the troops got paid.

    Still sucks though.
    LOL...

He vetoes that, and expects to blame the republicans?

I think I'm going to die laughing!

I am pretty sure Gates knows whether or not the military is going to be paid. When the Sec Of Def says you're not getting paid then I'm pretty sure you're not getting paid.

So what? This is a short term budget. A lot of sacred cows from both sides of the aisle are gonna have to be slaughtered if they are ever going to REALLY get serious about deficits. It doesn't really matter which ones get killed first.

No money for the war? Send everyone home then.
That's why we lost in Viet-Nam. Congress stopped funding it, and the troops had to be pulled out. It became a very sour time in our history.

I agree with the veto. If the rest of us are going to feel the pain of a government shut down then everyone should. I know it sucks for the military members but at the same time I think it teaches our society an important lesson.

You're wrong about it not mattering which goes first. Completely. Tell that to the people who's programs would be getting cut this year while the rich go on about with their tax cuts.

It also sets precedent. The President is right to finally grow some damn balls here.
