how bout old non-turn based rpg's? might be considered more action adventure.

final fantasy adventures on gb was like that, original zelda...

any other recommendations? i think that's my all time favorite genre. i've just always sucked at the turn based combat, but i love the dungeon crawling, stats, exploration, items, upgrading aspects...

oh good call. i remember renting that game as a kid. exactly the kinda game i'm lookin for.

i've been putting a few hours into this one lately:

not new by any means, but it's a blatant throwback to the final fantasy/zelda days. tons of humorous references if you've played some of the older rpg's mentioned in this thread.

I never played 8 but I will agree that 7 has become overrated with time. I played it and 9 again not too long ago and I'd take 9 any day of the week now. Looking back I can understand why me as a high school freshman didn't mind all the emo angsty-ness of Cloud, even though it was just plain grating this time around.
Fair enough. 9 is in a constant flip-flop for the 2 and 3 spot of my top 3 in the franchise with Tactics, but the top spot belongs solely to FFVI.

Disagreed on 2 out of the three. I liked 8, /loved/ 9, and hate 7 with a passion that occasionally borders upon the omnicidal.
Hate 7? That's like a Spurs fan in the year 2030 saying David Robinson was overrated and because other Spurs fans overrated him, he's decided to hate David Robinson.

    Ridiculous.

I always thought Betrayal At Krondor was a hugely underrated PC RPG.

Also, if you want obscure, check out Challenge of The Five Realms.

I also loved playing the origional Bards Tale on my Amiga.

    Ridiculous.
Clarification: While I may have little love for 7 as a game, and even less for its cash cow status, and yet still less for its fanbase, I will never dispute the impact it had on the franchise or on the genre as a whole.
