No, seriously -- how do you think he knew about what Pop was thinking about Neal this summer?

    Be specific.

So you respect his high opinion of Pop then.

    OK.
It's his job to know his what is main rival is doing. I'm sure he has paid staff that keep him informed of what is going on in the spurs org. It's not like it's a big secret that Pop wanted to use Neal as a backup PG, it was highly publicized information that I'm sure he has access to.

Is this 20 questions or do you have some inane point you're trying to make?

My theory is he watched some tape of Neal actually playing point guard while Manu and For were out and concluded he's not a point guard.

I bet he didn't hear about it during the summer when nobody was doing anything.

Which do you think is more likely?

I think its much more likely he knew that Pop was courting Neal for the role of backup point before Ford was signed. If you think Rick Carlsile lives in a vacuum and doesn't stay current of what's going on esp within his division rivals you are welcome to continue thinking that.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I believe Carlise when he says that Neal is not a point guard.

Don Nelson once said that he would run 4 down every play if he had Tim Duncan.
Yeah, but what year did he say that? Don't think he meant it to be a perpetual maxim.

If by some chance Pop was no longer around to coach this team I'd have to say Phil Jackson or Larry Brown. Other than that, I don't want anyone other than Pop.

I've been posting for some time that Pop is coaching his ass off, given the injury cir stances, and aging superstar, and the necessity bring the young guys into meaningful parts of the rotation on the fly with no preseason or practice time.

Pop is trying to get a feel for what the youngsters will give him later in the season and perhaps in the playoffs. This was an excellent time to test them in the clutch and to express some confidence in them.

Putting a tired, cold TP in at the finish might have won the game, but Pop won the youngster's hearts and souls. I bet they will listen to his coaching and run through walls for him now.

I think he's handling these young players masterfully. You can't knock a coach who has put so many youngsters in a position where they are playing to win a close game in OT against the NBA champs at home.

You don't expect to win every game away from home. At the beginning of the season you might have penciled this one in as a "probable loss" anyway. So this was a great loss.

Given all the above, there is no one I'd trust better than Pop to coach the Spurs this season.

Although I don't always agree with Pop's rotations, I do think he is one of the best coaches in the league. I wouldn't think of replacing him but if I had to, it would probably be with Larry Brown since he is available. I would also take a hard look at Kevin Sampson (assistant at Houston) and Bill Laimbeer if I wanted to go younger.

    Pat Riley or Phil Jackson

    - Because they wouldnt play Bonner
    - And both Riles and KFC prefer size to small ball, so Splitter would see more minutes

Obviously none, as this roster was made for Pop's requirements. However Phil Jax would probably do a better job with the right roster for his system.

Year after year I keep hearing how Pop has lost it, and that he should be fired. I'm not exactly disagreeing with the majority here, but who would realistically do a better job with this team?

He manages minutes well, has the players' respect, and his teams are usually pretty disciplined. He's also rebuilding a team on the fly as his vets start to fade out.

Who out there could do a better job, in your opinion?
    Current;

    Nate McMillan
    George Karl
    Scott Brooks
    Lionel Hollins
    Tom Thibodeau
    Rick Adelman

    others

    Van Gundy
    Phil Jackson

I don't think any of those coaches would have given away Scola, Mahinmi and none of them would have kept Bonner much less play him more than Splitter, Gooden,Mahinmi,etc....

Keep sucking off Pop but I am telling you he is severely overrated.

Lol, thinking Pop chose to give away Scola. Ever heard of the Spur's owner Peter Holt Einstein?

Crappy list of coaches, tbh. There's a solid 3 in there, but that's about it.

Pop is overrated, but you want some of those guys for head coach.

Even if the dust hasn't settled, Pop is definitely the best coach for this team...

That said, it would be intriguing to see what someone like Jerry Sloan or Pat Riley (who does have experience managing aging superstars... err Kareem) would do with our current roster...
