there was Prof of Meso-American studies on NPR this morning saying there was NO MAYAN EVIDENCE of end-of-world, only END OF CALENDAR CYCLE.

....but only one place survived, how about California? We have it all right here, the ag capital of the world. We have the mountains, the deserts, the ocean. What do we need we don't have, yes we have oil...Bakersfield. We have Stanford, Cal, Fresno State, USC, UCLA, San Diego State, San Jose State, Sac State, CPSLO, a ton of JC's. , we have Hollywood!!! We don't need anywhere else. Ya want football...we have three pro teams and could stick another in LA. The CFL....California Football League.

I'd hate to see everything around California....poof gone....but we could survive on our own.

I don't either. California is one of the most ed up states I ever visited. The air stinks, the water is nasty, the city streets smell. Maybe those who are used to fresh air, and grow up there don't notice. Like going into someones house that uses a litterbox for their cat, rather than letting it in and out. they don't even notice the smell, because they live with it.

I haven't even touched on their economy...
So why do sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many people live here then?

I can be at the coast in 3 hours, be deep in the mountains in 2 hours, be walking the desert in 2 hours. Tons of things to do.

I am a born and bred Californian, I've lived in almost every part of the state at some point, and I would happily return to certain areas if/when the time finally comes to leave New Orleans. But the entirety of the Central Valley is just horrible. Horrible. Which is made clear by the fact everyone who defends the area does so by listing how quickly you can get to somewhere else.

Exactly. When I lived in California, I lived in a good part. I sure as didn't brag about being a couple hours away from 70 miles SE of Fresno.

    LOl...

Even if that were a good thing.

I can get to the coast in a little over an hour, At Timberline lodge for skiing in a litte less than an hour. The other side of the mountains for the desert climate in a little over an hour. Water skiing area in 15 minutes. Up a mountain trail in under 30 minutes.

    And guess what...

Portland doesn't smell like urine when it rains!

You might ask what we would do for gasoline. We could simply start using electric cars, and the 3.1 Giga-watts of power that a non existent LA is no longer using would power them.

    Oh...

That 3.1 gigawatts is how much makes it to LA. If it gets there with a 75% efficiency, then it's more like 4 gigawatts we get to keep.

Power a few Deloreans with that!

    Neither does Arcata.

    Neither does San Francisco.

    Neither does Half Moon Bay.

    Neither does San Luis Obispo.

    Neither does Pasadena.

    I could go on...

Avante praising California based on the wonder and beauty of Fresno is hilarious. But so is the notion that Portland has anything that can't also be found in California.

And I say that as someone who quite likes Portland.

I'm not saying Portland has more. That would be wrong. From a practical point, California is not a self sufficient state. Nearly all their energy, they bring in from other states. They have a really ed up financial situation as well. The only thing Oregon lacks that I can think of is fuel for cars, trucks, oil furnaces, etc. We have a huge underground natural gas pipe, but I don't know if it is an Oregon source, or elsewhere. I think it comes from a tap in the side of the mountain. Three powerful hydroelectric dams for electricity, nearly all of which currently gets sent to Los Angeles. We have several smaller hydroelectric dams as well.

What good are the additional universities and entertainment if most the population has no electricity or transportation?

There are parts of downtown SF that do smell like urine when it rains. It is really noticeable when it's the first rain after being dry for a while.

Maybe you piss on yourself so much, you don't notice. You might simply be used to the smell...
