Who is the guitarist that used to play with Billy Idol? He was a shredder.

Neil Young, without a doubt, hands down (and I heard all the greats live during the 60s and 70s, so I know from whence I speak).

Just check out "Cinnamon Girl", "Southern Man", or "Cowgirl in the Sand" if you don't believe me.

Gotta admit, though, Carlos Santana runs a really close second.
I've heard Cinnamon Girl and Southern Man 100s of times and I guess it must be a matter of taste, but to me, the guitar work in there by Young is not that spectacular. In fact, I always liked Steven Stills' sound the best out of all the guys in CSNY.

Steve Stevens. Don't forget he also rocked on "Dirty Diana" for the King of Pop.

I also like Mark Knopfler, Robert Cray, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, George Benson.

I don't think a guitarist has to have spectacular licks or speed to be great.

Jose Feliciano is a of a guitarist but some just don't see it.

True, some guitarists have a soulfulness about them that make them great, even though they may not be always technically on it.

By the way, the question is smart. Avoiding the dumb "Who's the best guitarist..." is a must, in the end it's a matter of taste. Is Satriani a virtuoso or just a very "technical" one (dont know the literal translation of that, sorry). Is composition more important than performance? or the other way? etc.. etc...

I'd say Jimi Hendrix. He's the only artis who's guitar work I can listen to without any vocals in the song.

well i can understand if yall are listing people other than hendrix or srv
    but its not even close
no other guitarists have even come close to making me cry

srv is technically equal to jimi, jimi is probably the better musician, although srvs voodo child (sr) i must admit is better than jimis and srvs little wing is better than jimis
although if jimi could record a really long live improvised version it would most likely be better

You should check out some Carlos Santana, SRV, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Frank Gambale, Al DiMeola, George Benson, Chet Atkins and a host of others who sing through their guitars.

    But yeah, Jimi rocks!!

I love SRV but to say his versions are better than Jimi's is a matter of taste, not fact. I love Jimi's versions better and so did SRV.

Thanks. I must say that I really don't like Carlos Santana though. My favorite mucisian of all time is David Bowie, but he doesn't play very much guitar. Jimi Paige does very good guitar work also imo.

    What!! Don't like Carlos Santana!?!?!?!?!?
He has probably one of the most recognizable guitar tones in the world.
But I know it is all in the ear of the listener.
I really enjoy David Bowie's music too. Ch, Ch, Ch, Changes!
