Also, those alumni are now voting for this award, since the Executive of the Year is voted upon by the other league general managers and not by the media. Having old friends with votes (and likely an understanding that this award is long overdue) helps.
RC Buford joked he won Exec of the Year because he's finally got enough former staffers in GM posts to stuff ballot box.

    Congrats to RC.

I think one of the reasons why RC hadn't won in the past, is that Pop, as team President and Head Coach, is perceived in the media to make all the decisions.
Pop is basically a media hog disguising as someone who doesn't like the media. Players are kept in line as well as RC and the rest of the staff. Pop, though, steals the limelight with his "coaches interview" schtik.

I thought this was the Spurs' weakest off-season in recent memory. (I know 09 ended up being a failure, but we didn't know that until a year or so later.) But I guess there wasn't much real compe ion this year. King would have been a shoe-in had the Nets not had such a horrible start. As it was, instead of him getting credit for pulling off a huge deal, he got blamed for giving up so much of the future for such little return. I thought Danny Ainge did a pretty good job, but Boston sucked too much for him to have any chance to winning.

I probably would have given it to Cho out in Charlotte. His signings worked well. He made a smart trade to add talent. Overall he help bring a team from the bottom of the East to being a little respectable, and he did so without hindering his team's future prospects.

Congrats R.C. Well deserved and long overdue.

It's kind of funny he'd win it this year though when he didn't really do anything (i.e. failed to execute any notable trades / sign any notable free agents from the buyout market)
do they really give this award based on the current year?
you can't really judge FO moves until years later

    Gonna be honest.

It's bull , and not even by a little.

The Suns were predicted to have 18-20 wins. Both Hornacek and McDonough are uniquely responsible for a team who exceeded expectation by 30 games by trading veterans, acquiring hungry bench players, and having a vision and blueprint for success.

I get Buford is overall deserving, and Pops is Pops, but you all suck for tipping a figurative cap to such a goddamn travesty. Awards have officially ted up their integrity.

Suns were "predicted". What a terrible argument. By that logic, we can say Duncan is MVP, Pop COY and RC EOY and Manu 6MOY & Kawhi MIP because the Spurs have been "predicted" to be too old for so many years. They not only were "predicted" to melt down after what happened in last years finals, but they came out and had the best record in the league despite massive injuries and these "predictions".

    Don't be an ass.

It's bull and you know it.

They had a bottom five roster before McDonough, and finished with 48 wins when he finished.

Many lament the past robberies of RC while with the same breath cheering on his bull lifetime win in the same bull robbery fashion at the expense of a rookie GM who took one of the league's bleakest rosters and futures and in one offseason changed its fortunes immeasurably.

All's fair, but calling a spade a spade doesn't make you a bad fan. It makes you a good one.

I can understand Pop. Did a of a job managing injuries, age.

But Buford is straight slung bull by jealous execs at the immediate and lasting effects McDonough has made to a team completely written off by even is Suns fans.

The Suns were actively trying to put together a tanking team for this year's draft tbh....

And stumbled into 48 wins despite significant injury?

    Don't be a head-in-the-sand RC .

It's a stolen, bull honor at the expense of the rightful rookie winner. Execs voted, sent a message. I'll send one, too.

    Go simultaneously skull yourselves.

McD did the following in last year's off-season:

    Traded:

Jared Dudley + 2nd round pick --> Eric Bledsoe
Luis Scola --> Gerald Green + Miles Plumlee + 1st round pick
    Marcin Gortat + Shannon Brown + Kendall Marshall --> Emeka Okafor's $14mil expiring + 1st round pick

    Hired Jeff Hornacek as coach

So basically he inherited a 25-win team with one of the worst rosters in the NBA, flipped a bunch of non-stars into a couple of 1st round picks and Eric Bledsoe, hired a coach of the year candidate, and turned the Suns into a 48-win team in the Western conference. His moves put our rebuilding efforts about 3 years ahead of schedule.

This is clearly a lifetime achievement award for RC, but McDonough got straight robbed here. Pop over Hornacek is understandable, if debatable. This is the first award this postseason I feel like they got completely wrong.

Why are you so mad over this award? RC's been snubbed for this award for 10+ years....

Plus the league already gave Dragic his Most Improved Award so it's not like their season was completely ignored but at the end of the day, they still missed the playoffs.

If anything, I'd be mad at my GM for putting my team in a crappy position for a team in the NBA, not good enough for the playoffs and not crappy enough for a good lottery pick.

I'll be all for McDonough wining next season's award if the Suns can draft well and pick up an impact FA and they make a nice run next year, but I don't know if he should be lauded for having a mediocre year at best..

I've just never seen anybody be so mad over a GM of the year award tbh...

    Plain. Simple.

Anyone saying differently is an RC without wit or worth to any discussion.

Every Spurs fan agrees RC didn't deserve it this year. We just disagree with your logic about how the Suns got jobbed.

So there's a bell curve for deserving now?

He did jack for the award this year. His robbery achievement gifting is so goddamn full of stank taint. Hollow. ing. Win.
