True to a point, but all the athleticism can disappear as well with good ball movement and a high IQ of what it takes to win. Diaw made an athletic Bosh look like a JV second stringer.
Didn't say you could win on athleticism alone. I also don't agree on the le of this thread in regards to drafting someone that is a super athlete without much skills or potential to improve. Personally, I'm just talking about getting players that are somewhat decent athletically that also have potential to get better in other aspects of their games. I'm just not sure that a guy that looks like a complete stiff in regards to athleticism can make it in the NBA or even on this team.
Even Boris Diaw and Tim Duncan were/are decent athletes. Marco for example, one of the least athletic players on the team was a huge liability in the playoffs on the defensive end of the court. He almost made an older Vince Carter look like a superstar again every time that he defended him. Spurs couldn't even play him much in the OKC series as they took advantage of him defensively when he was on the court.
You guys gotta think about defense a little bit. You can't get caught up in the offense and forget about defense. You don't win without decent defense.

............. Wade and Lebron can jump into the terrace level, and our unathletic team made them look ordinary. I doubt Boris can even dunk the ball. He was making back door cut layups on the super athletic Heat and Thunder. They couldnt stop that at all![]()
I never said it was the whole reason, nor did anyone else. But, it is a large portion of the reason. The NBA has written a lot of defense out of the game, and Pop adapts. Defense was much improved, absolutely. But, being an elite passer and play-maker is rare, as is being an elite athlete. Ginobili will be almost impossible to replace in kind, for example. If you draft a player that can't pass, he will never be an elite play-maker. You don't learn that skill in the 5-10 years after being drafted, you hone it from the age of 5, are born with it, or both. And, while defense and shooting skills are not easily taught, I believe there is a higher probability in improving a player in those types of areas than in the areas of passing and play-making. Bruce Bowen, Danny Green, etc. This is why I like a player like Austin Daye, too. His father was a pro basketball player. While he may lack certain athletic abilities, the environment he grew up in has provided him some intangibles and immeasurables that Pop and staff might be able to exploit, while mitigating his weaknesses using the weight room, video room, help defense, etc. Maybe Anderson is the knell for Daye, though.
Athleticism is great, and you can't teach it. But, the likelihood that you find a smart athletic guy at number 30 isn't great. When they think they can get a smart, coachable athletic guy, they will. They got Kawhi. Livio is more athletic than some we've drafted. So, the last few draft picks have been about looking for athleticism. However, Livio is not regarded as an athletic freak. He was maybe just the best mix of athleticism and IQ at number 28. I usually don't get excited about our trades and off-season, But the last few years has been as much fun since Tony, Manu, and Tim.
Regarding the need for a backup for Kawhi, even if we don't get the prototypical SF for that, Pop has demonstrated that he has plenty of tools to spell Kawhi's minutes and survive, if not even thrive while doing so. The hole at SF is not as gaping as you seem to think it is, in my opinion.
Diaw 0.2
Don't insult Boris. As many have pointed out, Boris was an incredible athlete in his youth, and will still give Anderson a run for his money in that department.
But we already HAVE Danny and Kawhi. Point at our team and tell me which guys are play-makers under the age of 30?
And, Danny isn't the best example of athletic. He's not horrible, but he's far from elite. He is even quoted himself as being worried that his foot speed would prevent him from getting a spot on the roster back in the day.
Do you think Pop is going to run Marco, Kyle, Austin, Ayres, and A point guard out there together? Have faith. Marco guarded Lebron in The Finals. We won. Convincingly.
Good points. "The ball moves faster than your feet." And, I love watching these leaping guys running out at my three point shooters when those three point shooters can dribble two or three times and wreak havoc with a dish.
Today all the sportscasters are saying the biggest steal of the draft was Kyle Anderson by the Spurs.
People will complain if hung with a new rope.
Agreed, a lot of our success happens after getting into the lane and making an extra pass. you need athleticism to start the whole damn thing off
Same here. SA could had drafted anybody good or bad. After that thrashing of Miami they can really do no wrong it my eyes.
yet the most athletic player won MVP?
And the best passer was a very close second...
They had to give it to someone. Did you listen to all of the equivocations from the announcers, writers, voters? Tim could have gotten it. Or, Diaw. It wasn't all that clear cut for your most athletic player. He didn't have a great game 1&2, despite his athleticism.
Z-Bo would still school Anderson at this stage in his career.
Would you take Chris Dudley or Lloyd Daniels?
All don't have a bench. Next question your highness.
LeBron won MVP?![]()
we got bohner back
Excellent thread, would read again.
I sincerely hope you're not this racist and bigoted in real life, because it is genuinely appalling to read on the internet—especially considering you're 2nd Team All-SpursTalk.
He's huge, when I see him I just have to think "damn this looks 30."
I have no idea how he didn't get drafted. Athletic guys usually do, especially ones with size...
I wanted CleAnthony Early not sure @ 30 though?
