...At the final buzzer, Duncan looked as relieved as he was thrilled. He's headed for rest and the offseason, where he's also the franchise's most valuable employee.
With the core of the team locked up for next season, the Spurs will only tweak their roster this summer, starting with Tuesday's draft. They pick 28th in the first round.
They'll also dip into the free agent market, which will include two of their key players — postseason hero Robert Horry and Devin Brown.
That's where Duncan plays a critical role. His top-shelf talent, unselfish play and team-first at ude are attractive lures for premier free agents looking for a ring.
"We've been real fortunate in the sense of having people who wanted to stay, wanted to get signed, get it done, get it over with and having a young enough core, with Timmy obviously, as center and everything," coach Gregg Popovich said. "He makes it attractive for people because he's unselfish and people enjoy playing with him."
The power forward is in large part the reason Horry joined the Spurs as a free agent two years ago, defensive ace Bowen stayed in the fold and Brent Barry left the Seattle SuperSonics and signed a four-year contract last summer.
Horry originally wanted to come to the Spurs after the 2001-02 season. He had a chance to opt out of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, but didn't when he heard rumors of Duncan possible going to the Orlando Magic.
"I said if Tim's not going to be there, I'm not going there," Horry said. "But it worked out. Tim is the only reason."
