Seahawks losing was a lot worse than tonight IMO..

Atlanta's loss was historic, but at least it was a collective meltdown that spanned an entire quarter..

Seattle's came down to a single play where just had to run ONE YARD WITH THE BEST RB IN THE NFL THAT HAD SPENT ALL NIGHT DESTROYING NEW ENGLAND
Still, Lynch was stuffed on the previous play and could have been stuffed again. It's obviously 4 down territory and so they had 3 total chances from that point, but what happens if you lose 3 yards? What if you get a penalty that backs you up to the 6 or worse, the 11?

The Falcons had it much easier. Just run the ball up the gut up 8 points at the 20 yard line. It doesn't matter if you get another first down at that point, it doesn't matter if you get a yard or even lose a yard or two, just don't lose 10 or more... and they lost about 25. Effin' ridiculous.

    1. Game 6 of the 2011 WS. Rangers had consecutive 99% favorite situations that they blew in the 9th and 10th innings.

    2. 18-1 Pats.

    3. Yankees blowing a 3-0 lead, 2004 NLCS.

    4. Warriors blowing a 3-1 lead. 73-9, two closeout games on their home court, league MVP on their team.

    5. 6

I don't rank this as a memorable choke (even though it was a great game) because unless you've only started watching football last year, you just knew at some point Brady and the Pats were going to make a run. Pats were favored coming in, have the consensus GOAT QB and Coach, and unmatched post-season experience. A great choke typically involves the (heavy) favorites uncharacteristically melting down in some fashion. If you asked anyone before the game if a 25 point 3rd quarter lead against Tom Brady is safe, almost everyone would say no, especially if the team leading is the Atlanta Falcons . Conversely, if you asked fans before Game 6 of the 2013 Finals if a 5 point lead with 28 seconds left is safe for a Popovich/Duncan Spurs team who've never lost a Finals, most people would say yes, even with Lebron on the other team (who was known as something of a choker then).

The biggest choke job last night was in the first half. I think the Pats defense only played 19 snaps, and their offensive time of possession was over 20 minutes. But they still went into the locker room down 21-3.

Yes, and it showed in the end. The Falcon D was clearly gassed in the 4th quarter and OT. (I think the Falcons O played only +/- 40 snaps the entire game.) I thought the turning point, however, was when Atlanta was still up 16. They had a third and 1 on their 20-something yard line and chose to pass - and ran a pretty slow-developing play. Ryan gets hit and fumbles; Pats recover and get a quick TD. Even a failed running play allows the Falcons to punt the ball and defend the length of the field while time ticks off the clock. The penultimate possession when they incurred the penalty and Matty Ice gave up the sack was the game-loser (from Atlanta's perspective), but the tide had turned on the previous possession. As Chris noted, Atlanta's OC has some 'splainin'" to do!

Bills overcoming a 32-point deficit in the 3rd quarter against the Oilers in 1993 Wild Card game in 1993 doesn't even get an honorable mention?

They had the game won. All they had to do was play clock and field position. They did the one thing that could have lost them that game.

It was as bad as leaving a guy wide open for a corner 3 with less than two seconds on the clock, with a 3 point lead.

Not quite as bad for me. I was much more emotionally invested in the Spurs.

All they had to do was not fumble it then all they had to do was get a field goal then all they had to do was stop any of the 2 point conversions and they had to lose the coin toss to in OT.

Last night was the most incredible sports event in my lifetime. The comeback, the meltdown, the clutch plays (Julio, Edelman) the history..Brady getting #5 and the game going into overtime..like it was pretty much a real life movie script. ing incredible..

You guys are way too caught up in the moment. Wilson's interception was so much worse. It was second and goal at the one yard line with 26 seconds to play. No way Lynch doesn't pick up that yard on second down. And even if he doesn't get it Wilson can e the ball to stop the clock on third down and have Lynch pick up that yard on fourth. No way Lynch is getting stopped twice at the goal, not by ing New England.

    1. The Warriors blowing a 3-1 lead
    2. 18-1
    3. The Sharts blowing a 3-0 lead
    4. Struggle's interception at the 1-yard line
    5. 6
    6. The Rangers getting to within one strike away and totally unraveling
    7. The Oilers blowing a 32-point lead in the playoffs
    8. The Falcons' collapse
    9. Enrique Porker against the Lakers in 2004
    10. Enrique Porker against the Mavs in 2006
    11. Jean van de Velde, 1999 British Open

Choking is one thing. Jut being damn stupid is another. The deep drop pass play on 3rd and 1 was just damn stupid.

I don't really worry about Game 6 in 2013, because we got revenge in grand style the very next year. We destroyed the Heat so thoroughly, we sent LeBron packing back to Cleveland.

The World Series that year was an underrated choke. The Cardinals won 105 games that year. They were ing loaded on offense with Pujols, Rolen and Edmonds, and they had an underrated pitching staff with a bonafide ace in Chris Carpenter and a shutdown closer in Jason Isringhausen. I know the Sox were the "team of destiny" that year, but it's still hard to believe that that stacked Cardinals team couldn't even win one ing game in the World Series. And only one of those games was even particularly close.

This. Posters in this thread are really underrating just how epic the Falcons' collapse was last night. They were up 25 pts with 2 minutes remaining in the 3rd qtr.... the amount of things that had to go wrong for them to lose that game (and did) is staggering. No team had ever overcome an 11-pt deficit in the SB.. they were up 25 ing points (4 possessions) and others 2 min remaining in the 3rd qtr... Literally all they needed to do was take a knee on two separate downs, and they are Super Bowl champs, ending a championship dry-spell for the city of Atlanta. Instead they drop back to throw TWICE, and get sacked once, then called for a holding penalty next, pushing them out of FG position. Then give up both TD's and both 2-pt conversions, before losing on the first possession in OT. Just a ridiculous collapse of epic proportions for a city that has had nothing but bad luck wih their sports teams, especially the Falcons, who inexplicably seem to find a way to choke in every big game. That was easily worse than 6. Their fan base is gutted.
