I believe that sports fan bases are very forgiving if it benefits them. Look how Cleveland fans accept LeBron back even when he decided to spend his absolute peek in Miami and broke his championship virginity there. They were happy he was back because it meant a return to winning and contention.

If next year KL were to return to form we'd all be cheering him with the past pretty much forgotten. And if he demanded a traded we'd be booing him like the enemy. Its sports.

Look even at LMA who everyone was bashing last summer and now the L-train is leading us to the playoffs. Performance matters.

But there is that extra bit of love for players who are giving it their all. Timmy, Manu and the like. And that has been put into question by these events. The jury is out on Kawhi in that regard. Could go either way.

So, will I still cheer him? of course. Do I still want him a Spur? Absolutely. Has something been lost though? Possibly.

If he doesn't want out, then I will absolutely still believe in him. I just want him to come back this season, but if he doesn't, and as long as he doesn't want out, I'll still back him.

If the Spurs bring back that egomaniac, they will lose me as a fan. And I doubt I’m the only one tbh.

    Well said Bill.
I was going to add something of my own, but decided to tag along with you.
After the latest team meeting and Pop's statements I have mentally decided to appreciate this team as is and the effort they are putting in the rest of the season. I have decided to follow Manu's leadership... team will take him back at any point but it doesn't really help anyone at this point to keep hoping and expecting a return. They got to do the winning themselves. I am appreciating the guys who are playing...

now having said all that... I am also taking in these words from Pop:

I am looking at this entire thing very objectively and if you look at the facts devoid of the media created drama, twisting words teammates said, taking them out of context, etc. The only thing that has created drama is the fact Kiwi is and has been injured all this time. It has been a distressing situation for everyone involved, from teammates who want him back, to fans who have expected him all season (us here ... ), to the organization, to doctors that perhaps have found this inexplicable, and perhaps Kiwi too.

The only thing that is really, really worrisome if you assume all of the leaked drama and rifts are exaggerations, is that Kiwi has lost an entire season of his prime with a non-surgically repairable injury and thus frankly, we don't know if this thing is chronic (it has to be at this point), and how this will impact him in the future. Hindsight is 20/20 and perhaps he should have sat all season and stopped rehabbing and took time to really start from scratch, like not even working that leg out for a month or something even if it atrophies. A rehab like that would take many months, perhaps that is why he regrets returning b4 he was fully healthy and thus is now taking longer to be ready... but whatever it is, it is a concerning injury... Again, it could be career altering.

It would be a decent post if you knew how the body worked. Starting from scratch and not doing strength work?

I don't think he's coming back this year... and if he's not 100%, it's better that he sits this one out. He has already missed most of it anyways, and I do want him at 100% next season, not for this to drag on bc he came back and wasn't ready and thus he now needs more time to start a rehab from scratch bc he pushed himself too soon.

Just let him focus on getting himself right for next season.

I don't know the nature of his injury... nor am I a doctor or pretend to be (unlike others)... but there are some injuries where you just have to stop whatever you are doing to let them properly heal and then do your rehab.

I would know of literally zero instances where this would be the case, other than hard cast immobiliazation where you could not move effected part.

Must have an injured ass too since he can’t sit on the bench with his teammates.

I think Kawhi is genuinely hurt. I don't think it means he doesn't want to be a Spur or has another motive. He has no financial motivation to fake an injury. Do I believe in Kawhi...yes I do. I want him to heal and be a Spur for life.

Spurs drop to 7 and face GSW in the first round. NBA gets hit with a shock wave when Kawhi Leanord is at the last minute included in the starting lineup. First play Murray passes to Kawhi in the wing, Aldridge sets a screen and GSW switches. Kawhi facing Zaza, throws the ball hard into his face, ball bounces back into his hands as he jumps high in the air for a spectacular tomahawk dunk to stun the crowd. Kawhi raise his hand in the air and takes the flagrant one, as the crew rushes out to clean up the copious amount of blood gushing from Zaza’s face from the court.

As long as he is a Spur, I'll believe in him.
I always support former Spurs' players. "Once a Spur, always a Spur" works for me.

NBA is business, teams and players know it, if the Spurs make the decision of trading him, I'll continue rooting for him -except the games against us-.

I don't think KL is playing politics or strategy

I think his several games a few months ago proved to him that his leg isn't right, and he can't see much improvement so far.

He may be looking at Tim's chronic tendon degeneration and is worried he could be on the same path at a much earlier age.

    https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/m...-next-for-him/

and I don't think Tony's and KL's injuries are anywhere near the same injuries, only to same area.

And Tony doesn't play anywhere near the same physical intensity as KL does.

The forces on KL's legs are greater than Tony's, eg, KL weighing 30 lbs more.

Word. Kawhi does not benefit doing what everyone is thinking he is doing (sitting out/protesting). More likely something is really wrong with his leg. Didn't help he looked pretty mediocre his 9 game stint too. Started off like he was holding back. Then he started to pick it up and realized he was hurt. Other NBA teams would love a shot at getting Kawhi and it is more believable that they would use media to create dissent within organizations to do so than Kawhi becoming ungrateful and not wanting to play. Why should he lay media circus? Pop, Manu, and Tony are veterans enough to handle that part for him. Good for him. Hope he appreciates it by coming back with a vengeance.
