Give Dirk another 8 attempts from the field and see how their #'s compare...probably about 35 ppg for Dirk too...
i would be willing to bet dirk makes more then 19 of the 35 shots!
it's a shame a dude who shoots that much and misses more then half his shots can be considered mvp.those shots he misses could be valuable to a teamate if he actually passed the ball!

Billups is not in Dirk's league. The fact is Detroit has no weaknesses in their starting lineup. 1-5 is strong and not one player is so much more valuable than the others.

But Dirk has those all stars Josh Howard, Devin Harris and Keith Van Horn that I've been hearing so much about the last week or so. You know, the ones that will light the Spurs and whoever else stands in their way right up...? Okay...maybe not Van Horn.

Kobe has no big-named players like that...he has to do it all alone.

If Dirk did win it, however, I would have no problems with that.

kobe has you all fooled he has player's but how does he know how they perform?he only see's them when he is on the bench and most of the time the bench comes back if their trailing when he is ion the bench!you can say kobe is the only one who can do anything on his team when he shoots 35 times a game and doesn't give his other teams a chance to prove themself!
is missing 20 times more valuable to his team then passing a assist out?
either way their not scoring so why not get your teamates involved and make plays for them?at least when you dont have a clear cut shot if your a real good player you shouldn't have trouble making plays for your teamates.
13/32 or making a assist for your teamates instead of missing 19 shots hmm thats a toughy for kobe!

the reason kobe never had what you call off nights is cause he shoots 32 times a game and only makes 13 of them any player who shoots that many times will get those kinda number's every night but some players dont have the mind set to be a one man show and miss 19 shots instead of passing the ball!some player's love to do a thing called assist, and if you call getting 22 opts and 11 assist a off night then you do so i would take that over a win anyday. we all know kobe can score 50 and his team can still lose so that says something right there!maybe he shoulda passed the ball instead of missing 20 times.
I love the Kobe never gets any assists line. Yes, he does take a lot of shots, but honestly, who the is he going to pass to on that team? Kwame Brown? Sasha? Luke Walton? Give me a break. If Kobe weren't jacking up 32 shots a night.....Lakers would be lucky to average 80 points a game!

My MVP vote is now down to Billups or Dirk. Even though I think Nash deserves it...the Suns have been struggling lately. Kobe is already getting the scoring le. And Lebron is probably going to be considered too young and inexperienced to get this award.

Ahem*, not that I'm exactly a Laker fan or anything, but I'd like to point out the following stat lines for Kobe Bryant for the 2005-2006 NBA season.

    PPG: 35.2
Assists: 4.6 (pretty good for a SG)
    Rebounds: 5.30
    Eff: +27.46
    FT%: 85%
    FG%: 45%

Do you even watch basketball? Billups shoots 41% from the field and ughghg Kobe shoots 45. I am not a math major but 45 > 41. Looks like you need to get on billups about his shooting because he shoots worse.

Kobe has to put big numbers for them to even have a chance to win. This is what makes him the most valuable to his team. Lamar Odom has stepped up lately, but his team has been mostly garbage for most of the year. I say the pistons would still be a top 3 seed in the east without Billups. Try to imagine a seed for the fakers without kobe.

wtf is point about kobe scoring 50? Check the record before making outlandish statements. ugghghg. I won't check because I want you to figure it out for yourself. That 81 pts was impressive, wasn't it? It was a win.

Somewhere in your post if I read correctly is about his assisting. Maybe if his teammate would actually make a shot he would have more confidence in them. Kobe passed to Walton and he had a WIDE OPEN look to win and he missed. It's hard to get assists numbers with misses. 4.5 assists isn't bad for a shooting guard.

I haven't like Kobe but he is right now the best player in the league and the MVP HANDS DOWN

I suppose Kobe winning it would be a fitting 30th Anniversary tribute to Kareem's winning MVP in 1976 for the 40-42 Lakers... That's the last time anyone on a team with a winning percentage as low as this year's Lakers team has won MVP.

I'd give it to Dirk though.

Billups shoots a ton of 3 pointers and that is why his field goal percentage isn't that high. I believe he shoots 41% from 3's as well. Still though he isn't the mvp.

I haven't like Kobe but he is right now the best player in the league and the MVP HANDS DOWN
There is nothing "hands down" about the MVP race this year. This is one of the closest MVP races in recent memory, where there are 4-5 candidates each of whom has a decent chance.

The MVP award is very closely linked with team success. There might be an argument that it should not be so, but that's just the way it is. The Lakers are 41-37, should end up with 43-44 wins. That by no means is enough for MVP. Michael Jordan in 88-89 averaged 32.5 PPG, 8 APG, 8 RPG at 54% shooting. The Bulls finished 47-35, and Jordan didn't win MVP. It went to Magic (22.5/12.8/7.9, 51% FGP) as the Lakers finished 57-25.

Is Kobe having as good a season as Michael in 88-89? I don't think so. In fact, Jordan had won MVP the previous year (87-88) with lesser stats (35/6/5.5 at 53.5% FGP) than in 88-89. He won partly because the Bulls had 50 wins. Team record matters.

Given team records, Dirk has to be a leading candidate. Statistically speaking, both LeBron and Dirk have a better PER than Kobe. LeBron in particular easily has better stats than Kobe. (31.7/6.2/7.2, 48% FGP vs 35.2/4.6/5.3, 45% FGP), and is poised for 50 wins.

    1. LeBron
    2. Dirk
    3. Kobe/Nash/Wade/Billups

    Nash is the MVP

i can't even believe that this is still up for discussion

    1) Nash
    2) Billups
    3) Dirk Nowitzki
    4) Kobe Bryant

I thought Lebron had a much better season last year

i think lebron just has better teammates this year than last year, not so much himself improving that greatly

Effective FG%. It takes into account that 3-pointers are worth more than 2-pointers.

    Formula: eFG% = (FGM + [0.5 * 3PM])/FGA

Thanks. It's more like BS FG% to me. It makes it fair for people who like to camp out at the 3 pt line but makes over misses is simple for enough for me to know whether your shot selection is any good.

    But shouldn't 4-10 on 3-pointers be valued higher than 5-10 on 2-pointers?

It's not a perfect stat, but there's a reason players who shoot 40% from behind the arc shoot them in higher quan ies than others. That should be taken into account when comparing players' shooting proficiency.
