A: This guy looks like he just got stung by a bee or something ...

B: I'm guessing he's pointing to the direction of the bee sting ointment.

C: Yes ... you wear more makeup than RuPaul and you expect to be seen as evil ...

D: He looks kinda normal ... relatively speaking ......

E: Why are his eyes all buggy? Is he trying to cast a spell or something?

    F: Isn't this Chris Kirkpatrick from N'sync?

For the people wondering about non-gangsta lyrics with words of more than two syllables.

Hole In The Bucket -- Spearhead
    (M. Franti/M. Harris)

(Money Money Money Money Nothin But Money)
I work 9 to 5 but it starts in the P.M.
and I love the sunrise so I step out in the A.M.
the street is black and shiny from the early
    nightly rainin'
the glory of the light it brings evaporation
    morning's fresh oxygen cleanest
I take a deep hit help my mind stay the greenest
I'm already wake so I'm not drinkin' coffee
don't wanna cigarrette, 'cause it's a form of slavery
walk into the store 'cause I need a few items
the sun heats the blood like a hit of vitamins
needa buy some food and some 'poo for my dreads
can't remember why but I need a spool of thread
Man with dirty dreads, steps around the comer
he asks me for a dime, a nickel or a quarter
I don't have any change so I'm steppin' along
and as I'm walkin' past he sings to me a song...

    (chorus)
There's a whole in the bucket dear liza, dear
    liza...(repeat)

The day is pickin' up cause I'm hummin' his song
the buses and the people all keep movin' along
to the shopkeeper I say "was'sup?"
and I'm thinkin' about the man who's holdin' up the cup
I pay for all the stuff and get a pocketful of change
should I give it to the man's the question in my brain
What's gonna happen if I give the man a dime?
I don't wanna pay for anotha brotha's wine
What's gonna happen if I give the man a quarter?
will he find a dealer and try to place an order?
what's gonna happen if I give the man a nickel
will he buy some food or some pork that's been pickled?
I'm not responsible for the man's depression
how can I find compassion in the midst of recession?
How come all these questions keep in' with my head
and I still can't rememba why I need a spool of thread.

    (chorus)

He's starin' in my eyes just as I'm walkin' past
I'm tryin to avoid him cause I know he's gonna ask
me about the coinage that is in my pocket
But I don't know if I should put it in his bucket
walk right past him to think about it more
back at the crib I'm openin' up the door
a pocketful of change it don't mean alot to me
my cup is half full but his is empty
I put back on my cap and I start headin' back
I reach into my pocket and I have a heart attack
well as I'm diggin' deep I scream "oh no!"
there's nothin' in the pocket but a great big hole
While I was busy thinkin' if he would buy smack
the jingle in my pocket it slipped through the cracks
no one has the change and it's in' up my head
But now I no the reason why I had to buy the thread!

    (chorus)

the same could be said for sergio mendes and his timless album. though i am of the opinion that lots of "hip hop" incorporates very intelligent lyrics to begin with. with rap/commerical rap/gangsta rap it differs..

Kid Koala is ing brilliant turntablism -- in his version of "Basin St. Blues," he does things with a turntable that I flatly had no idea could be done. He makes a pretty compelling case that a turntable can be as legit a jazz solo instrument as a saxophone or a trumpet. And guess what -- he doesn't make a single reference to "hos" or "drivebys" or whatever else it is that you think ALL hip hop is about.
you should check out the phonosycographDISK (DJ Disk of the piklz) album called Ancient Termites. there are some great turntablists out there, like eddie def, dj shadow, cut chemist, dj quest, all of the skratch piklz past and present. disk was one of the first to get out there and use his turntable as an instrument. scratching creates endless possiblities for music. i also saw mix master mike a few years ago when he was touring with rahzel, that was a wild show - he basically had 2 crates of records, one on each side of his turntables. 2 hours later, he had gone through both crates. madlib is also doing some really cool stuff - have you heard his album using the blue note catalog?

Thanks -- I'm not familiar with that album, and I'll definitely check it out. Intrumental turntablism blows me away when it's done well.

I've never seen Mix Master Mike live -- that's got to be a of a show.

That's fantastic stuff -- jazz by way of hip hop and electronica is some of my favorite music to listen to.

it takes an incredible ear and hand-eye coordination to manipulate a turntable, much like any other instrument. just because it was initially used to play records back only doesn't mean it can't be used as an instrument. i guess a washboard couldn't possibly be considered an instrument either then? i have a huge amount of respect for people who can do it right. why would you say they are not musicians?

Layering samples and beats on top of each other is a skill in its own right, but it's not really the same thing as playing a musical instrument.

But when you start with a disc that has a sample or a tone track and you play melodies from it by using your hand on the record to adjust the playback speed and produce different notes, that's absolutely playing a musical instrument in the same sense that playing different notes by pressing keys on a keyboard is.

A lot of guitarists can only read tablature. And I guess drummers will never be musicians.

i'm sure a lot of classical musicians felt the same way when jazz started to get popular, and a lot of jazz musicians couldn't read sheet music. reading sheet music has pretty much nothing to do with being a "real" musician. if herbie han was down to work with DXT in the early 80s, that's proof enough for me.

theOnly God can judge me, is that right?
[synth voice] Only God can judge me now
Only God baby, nobody else, nobody else
All you other mother ers get out my business

    [Verse One: 2Pac]

Perhaps I was blind to the facts, stabbed in the back
I couldn't trust my own homies just a bunch a dirty rats
Will I, succeed, paranoid from the weed
And hocus pocus try to focus but I can't see
And in my mind I'ma blind man doin time
Look to my future cause my past, is all behind me
Is it a crime, to fight, for what is mine?
Everybody's dyin tell me what's the use of tryin
I've been Trapped since birth, cautious, cause I'm cursed
And fantasies of my family, in a hearse
And they say it's the white man I should fear
But, it's my own kind doin all the killin here
I can't lie, ain't no love for the other side
Jealousy inside, make em wish I died
Oh my Lord, tell me what I'm livin for
Everybody's droppin got me knockin on heaven's door
And all my memories, of seein brothers bleed
And everybody grieves, but still nobody sees
Recollect your thoughts don't get caught up in the mix
Cause the media is full of dirty tricks
    Only God can judge me

    [Chorus: 2Pac]

[synth voice] Only God can judge me
    That's right baby, yeah baby
    [synth voice] Only God
    Hahahahahahahaha
[synth + Pac] Only God can judge me, only God can judge
    [synth cont.] me, only God
    Only God can judge me
[synth + Pac] Only God can judge me
    And only God can
[synth voice] Only God can judge me, only God
    Only God can judge me
[synth + Pac] Only God can judge me
    Only God can judge me
[synth voice] Only God can judge me, only God
    Only God can judge me
[synth voice] Only God can judge me now

    [heart monitor: long beep]
    Flatline!

    [Verse Two: 2Pac]

I hear the doctor standing over me [heart monitor: beeping slowly]
    screamin I can make it
Got a body full of bullet holes layin here naked
Still I, can't breathe, somethings evil in my IV
Cause everytime I breathe, I think they killin me [beeping sound stops]
    I'm having nightmares, homicidal fantansies
I wake up stranglin, danglin my bed sheets
I call the nurse cause it hurts, to reminisce
How did it come to this? I wish they didn't miss
Somebody help me, tell me where to go from here
Cause even Thugs cry, but do the Lord care?
Try to remember, but it hurts
I'm walkin through the cemetary talkin to the, dirt
I'd rather die like a man, than live like a coward
There's a ghetto up in Heaven and it's ours, Black Power
is what we scream as we dream in a paranoid state
And our fate, is a lifetime of hate
Dear Mama, can you save me? And peace
Cause the streets got our babies, we gotta eat
No more hesitation each and every black male's trapped
And they wonder why we suicidal runnin round strapped
Mista, Po-lice, please try to see that it's
a million mother ers stressin just like me
    Only God can judge me

    [Chorus w/ variations]

    [Interlude: 2Pac]

That which does not kill me can only make me stronger
    (That's for real)
and I don't see why everybody feel as though
that they gotta tell me how to live my life
    (You know?)
Let me live baby, let me live

    [Verse Three: Rappin 4-Tay, Tupac]

Pac I feel ya, keep servin it on the reala
For instance say a playa hatin mark is out to kill ya
Would you be wrong, for buckin a to the pavement?
He gon' get me first, if I don't get him fool start prayin
Ain't no such thing as self-defense in the court of law
So judge us when we get to where we're goin wearin a cross, that's real
Got him, lurked him, crept the up on him
Sold a half a million tapes now everybody want him
After talkin behind my back like a would
Tellin them z, "You can fade him," punk I wish you would
It be them same mother ers in your face that'll rush up in your place
to get your safe, knowin you on that paper chase
Grass, glass, big screen and leather couch
My new is so fetti already sold a key of ounce
    , remember Tupac and 4-Tay
Them same two brothers dodgin bullets representin the Bay
Pac when you was locked down, that's when I'll be around
Start climbing up the charts, so sick, but they tried to clown
That's why they ride the bandwagon still be draggin sellin lies
Don't think I don't see you haters, I know you all in disguise

Guess you figure you know me cause I'm a Thug
That love to hit the late night club, drink then buzz
Been livin lavish like a player all day
Now I'm bout to floss em off, player with 4-Tay
    Only God can judge me

    [Chorus w/ variations]

    [4Tay] Only God main
    [2Pac] That right?
    [4Tay] That's real
    [2Pac] Hahahahahaha
    [4Tay] everybody else, yaknowhatI'msayin?
    [2Pac] Man, look here man

    [snip]

oh We're Not Gonna Take It
no, We Ain't Gonna Take It
oh We're Not Gonna Take It Anymore
    no Way!

Yeah, that really raised the bar for intelligent lyrics.
Please, I never said Twisted Sister.

Hopefully, not the ones where the metal bands are taking about worshipping Satan, right?
Just because Satan is mentioned, doesnt mean they worship him. Slayer is one of the best thrash bands of all friggin time, but small-minded politicians pigeon-holed them as devil worshippers when they mentioned his name.

Honestly, I don't keep up with current charting hip hop. And I'm not here to represent some black-wannabe "posse." I just like the music I like.

On the other hand, I know plenty of music that qualifies as hip hop that (a) is brilliant (b) has absolutely nothing to do with being a "gangsta."

Well, I was just educated, I guess. Here I thought Rap and Hip Hop were the same thing. Personally, dont explain the difference, please. If you say so, sure...sounds good.

I don't think Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald played an instrument either. To most of us, that doesn't disqualify vocal jazz as a genre of music.
Youre going to compare 2 professionaly trained vocalists with Hip Hop?! Youre talking about vocalists that can actually hold notes and harmony to a guy who can make words ryhme?

There have been some gifted rappers over the years. Q-Tip from Tribe Called Quest is probably my favorite. I don't know if there was ever actually a month that he was the flavor of, but he brought a genuine gift to what he did. Others like Eminem and Snoop Dogg seem to have a genuine talent for the medium, but I'm really not all that into what they rap about, so I don't listen to them very much.

Oh please. I'm 36. If I bought into it as a kid, it was back when it was Run-DMC and LL Cool J.
Well, I dont know what to say. Youve been listening for 20+ years. Youre an exception...a dying breed. Congrats! For all those pioneers efforts, the genre has been relegated to trash. Im glad you can peruse your local music store and find good hiphop/rap/whatever. Problem is, thats not mainstream stuff, nor will it ever be. Because that sort of thing doesnt sell...hos, drive bys, drugs and pimping do.

Look at those pictures I posted...do those look like Q-Tip fans? Or Kid Koala? NO! So stop acting like YOU are the norm, because youre a stark minority going to the way of the dinosaur.

I never personally attacked you. I attacked the popular genre. There are exceptions to every rule. But with gangrene, sometimes the whole leg has to go.

And disco was mostly just white people ripping off funk -- which was real music.

Lots of people who listen to pretty much any genre of music are absurd. Does that mean I shouldn't listen to music anymore? Or just that I should stop giving a crap what anybody thinks and listen to whatever I enjoy listening to?
No, you shouldnt stop listening to music obviously. You can listen to any damn thing you want.

But stop defending your chosen genre like there isnt anything severly wrong with it. Im sorry, if my kid ever looked or acted like GiG, I would disown him/her. I wont have pseudo-thugs living in my house, talking about 'hos' and pimps and all this other garbage that came from.....where?

Where did a silly little mis-directed white kid ever get these ideas? Hmmmm...

Im glad you have taste and discretion. Unfortunately, popualr culture doesnt. The stigma will always be attached and you will always be the minority.

    DarkReign,

I have two main points here:

    1. Music for suburban, rebel-wannabee teenagers hasn't changed that much. I picked on metal and picked Twisted Sister as an example, because lots of really stupid metal has been aimed at kids over the years. Twisted Sister, Poison, Megadeth, and Motley Crue were all popular artists during arguably metal's most popular era. Of course not all metal sucks like that -- that's my point: not all hip hop sucks either.

Suburban teenagers who think drivebys are way cool and daydream about being pimp lords of the ghetto aren't really all that different from suburban teenagers who think Ozzy biting the head off a live bat* was way cool and daydream about being black lords of evil.

And really, teenage rebel music wasn't all that different when it was Link Wray, Hendrix, The Clash, Marley, the Dead Kennedies, or Nirvana -- the main difference is that the music didn't suck.

Fortunately, past generations have proven that teenagers do grow up.

(* I have no idea whether this is a true story or not. It doesn't matter. The point is that a lot of teenagers believe it and think it's cool.)

    2. Not all hip hop is gangsta music aimed at white teenagers. That's just what you hear about in the media.

As far as the difference between rap and hip hop, there's not much. Strictly speaking, rapping is a way of rhyming words rhymically over music, and it can appear in various musical genres, including R&B, electronica, pop, etc. Hip hop is a genre of music that encompasses various subgenres, including those that people call "rap."

There's lots of rap music out there. Some of it is musically brilliant. Some of it is just fun party music. Some of it is socially conscious. Some of it is about drivebys and hos.

In large part, the gangsta music is there simply because it sells in the 'burbs. And that's why it's so popular. You could make a good case that white suburban teenagers have been much worse for rap music than rap music has been for white suburban teenagers.

Yeah, Kid Koala will never be a fraction as popular as Eminem. So what? My point was that your whole thing about all rap music being like that was pure ignorance. Yeah, Kid Koala is pretty obscure. But Arrested Development was pretty popular back in the day. The Roots have charted. The Black Eyed Peas have charted some hits -- some of their music is vastly overrated, but it's definitely not gangsta music.

I've never heard of anyone playing the drum machine in the grade school band either, but the people who program drum machines for charting artists know a load about music.

There's a big difference between the guy who spun "Endless Love" at your high school prom and the Invisibl Skratch Piklz.

Well, you definately argue your point well. But you are dead wrong about why gangsta rap is popular. Sure, white kids contribute more than any other culture only because they are a majority. But % wise, its obvious who buys the crap. They drive up and down Gratiot and Woodward, across Little Mack and Cass. Throwing gang signs out of cars at old people just passing thru.

Sorry. Im from the Detroit area. I have no illusions about what this music promotes and who relates the most to it.

Thats not being racist. Thats the truth. Inner city black kids hang on that music like a Bible. I have seen it with my own 2 eyes waaaaaaay too much. Couple years back I worked with my brother for a low-income contractor. So please dont try and tell me who and what this music represents, because for every strangeweather, theres 10 wiggers and thugs.

People who program drum machines are usually either keyboardists or drummers.
They're also DJs and remixers who move from appropriating beats to composing them.

I'm not sure exactly what your point is here. On the one hand, you say that the main consumers of this music are inner city black kids, but on the other, the kids you've been posting pictures of and complaining about are goofy suburban poser kids. Canny rap artists dating back at least to Ice Cube and Dre from NWA cashed in on exaggerated, glamourized stories of gang lifestyles by selling those images to white kids.

Yeah, the music and style is popular in the inner city (from what I gather -- unlike you, I live a long way from the 'hood and don't see it first hand), but if gangsta music and culture were mainly just an inner-city phenomenon, it wouldn't be splashed all over MTV, etc. It is being pitched to the 'burbs, and a lot of what shapes the style is what will sell there.
