    @ Spaghetti Warehouse and Bennigan's!!!
I like the Spaghetti Warehouse here, but I have eaten at a couple that were not as good. I haven't been in a Bennigan's in 20 years.

Yes ... it's been here for a couple of years now.
Oh god, I think I drooled a little just typing that...that's the easiest way to my heart: Not roses or diamonds, but the Godiva Chocolate or The Cheesecake factory.

I tried this place twice because after my food wasn't all that great the first time, I wanted to give it a second shot. And now I know more than ever that I don't want to go back.

Too expensive for what you get. I've been looking for a great New Orleans style restaurant in town (or even Austin) but have yet to find one but would appreciate any suggestions.

But I travelled to NO about three or four times a year before the hurricane so maybe my take on Ledoux's is skewed. I went for lunch both times and it was dead. I'm sure the atmosphere is much better at dinner and it looks relatively festive.

For Italian food, I'd go to La Focaccia on South Alamo. The entrees are fantastic but that side of spagetti they bring you isn't all that. Maybe they've improved it recently. But the atmosphere is great.

I know you don't want mexican but El Mirado and Rosario's have great atmosphere and good food without being too expensive. You can also do the Riverwalk thing and get some tables on the patio at the Mexican Manhattan. Riverwalk dining for $7-$10 a person.

For good steak at a restaurant that isn't a chain, you can go to Josephine Street Steaks and Whiskey. Not too expensive but the place is a little small depending how many people are going with you.

If you want to make a day of it and head out of town, you can take a barbecue roadtrip to City Market in Luling or Chislom Trail or Kreutz in Lockhart. The Shady Grove in Austin is a pretty good burger type joint but it would be hard to seat a large group together. But it is in the Barton Springs area so you can go down to Zilker Park to the spring fed pool or do other things in the park.
Blue Star out on Alamo has a former New Orleans chef working for them. It isn't straight up NO food, but it is about as good as I've seen here in San Antonio. Actually, because this reminded me of it, I'm heading out there for lunch as we speak.

FACE PAINTING??!!! Why didn't you say so. Now my woman will demand to go.

Actually, I do have to go one more time. I took the woman to NO last July and now she's been dying to find a place to get a good shrimp po-boy. We found an awesome place in Dallas called Dodie's that was on par with all of the NO restaurants but we have yet to find anything close in SA. I've heard of a place called Ma Harper's on the southside but I haven't been there yet.

Blue Star downtown had a chef that was a New Orleans evacuee and he was putting several cajun item on the menu including a dynamite Cajun Barbecued Shrimp but he quit so the search is back on. I noticed that Louie's has the same dish so I'll need to try it and give them their last chance. I'll make sure to go for dinner though so I can see the place lit up and alive.

As for mom, something special would be good so I'd stay away from the chain restaurants unless she has a number one place she likes to go. I'm assuming she doesn't since you're asking but if she does, maybe that is the way to go.

If you're going to do a chain restaurant, go for someplace that is dark and interesting like PF Chang's or J Alexanders. J Alexanders looks elegant, is dark enough to feel intimate and cozy and in addition to steaks and such, they also have fairly priced burgers and mid-level fare. The only issue there is nothing will Wow you but the atmosphere is great.

One last option I'll mention is The Alsatian in Castroville. Very small and quaint place. Has a fantastic out of the way, hidden gem feel to it. Great food and relatively inexpensive wine makes it a winner in my book.
Never ing mind. You just killed my buzz.

Piccolos outside 410 on Evers. Little known hole-in-the-wall frequented by much of the "elite" in town.

Doesn't look like much on the outside, but it's still owned by the original owners, and they have quite the Italian menu. Wine list doesn't suck, either.
