I don't mind the occasional "freak fight"...

Crocop vs Yoshida was part of the OWGP. That's just part of the open weight tourny...

I think you're over-stating the # of mis-match fights between Japanese cans and good fighters. Of course Pride is going to try to push their (Japanese) fighters, but they don't all suck and nowhere near every fight has a Japanese fighter in it...

I don't like freak fights because someone could get seriously hurt, and that would tarnish the emerging sport of MMA. Sites like the one I told you about earlier are trying so hard to fight the lame arguments of calling MMA "human fighting".

Which is one reason that I don't really like the Open weight tournaments. Of course that will provide many mismatches. I didn't overstate the criticisms I had regarding the current day-Pride. I did say it was getting better. But my criticisms were accurate as far as how Pride was in the past.

I will bash the UFC of one thing though, and they could really learn a lesson from Pride: Ref stoppages.

The UFC has had a bad history of stopping fights way too early. Cecil Peoples probably had the worst ref stoppage in history. But what guys like Big John do is that if a guy gets knocked down hard, they will stop the fight even when the guy who gets knocked down has a chance to clinch and maybe get the aggressor in their guard. (Sakuraba vs. Marcus Silveira is a great example.)

There doesn't seem to be an issue in this with Pride, because the refs seem to want to make sure that the downed fighter has no chance.

I can't stand the fighting tag either...

I scanned thru about a dozen Pride shows from the past 5-6 yrs and typically there were 3 or 4 Japanese fighters out of 12-18 fighters per show, and some of them were matched up head to head. Probably around 20%-25% of the fighters are Japanese and many of those are great fighters! There are just too many great fights/matchups to rip on Pride for having a few Japanese fighters that shouldn't be there. I'd put Pride's spare Japanese fighters up against the spare UFC fighters any day...

If there was ever a card like that, I'd put my money against yours.

Japanese fighters weren't my only problem with former cards. For a while Pride had the whole "work" rumors floating. They had a cheesy pro wrestling factor to some of the way they did things. I know there was some sort of loose affiliation with a pro wresting organization, but I don't know enough to expound upon that.

One of the things that pissed me off the most was when Sapp fought Nog. I cringed of seeing a true fighter and athlete go against some steroid freak. Thank God Nog didn't come out of that with some career ending injury.

Agian, Pride has greatly improved. I hope that we can see Kharitonov look like the unstoppable fighter he used to be. Tough two loses for him. Man, I liked watching him fight.

That's a good point about a worked fight rumor here or there. I don't think anything like that happens now though...

    In your opinion...

but MMA is blowing up, with or without you onboard...

    Is boxing lame?
Is wrestling (not WWE crap) lame?
    Is martial arts lame?

MMA is a fascinating sport IMO...I doubt if you know much about it...

You'd rather spend your time playing WoW anyway, which I think is lame...

Put an MLS game up against a live fight night on cable (ie, e TV) and I guarantee the MMA will have better ratings. , The Ultimate Fighter reality show would have higher ratings...

The next live fight night (basically a free PPV) is Oct 10th on e...take a night off from WoW and check it out...

    Huh???

Tyson has NOTHING to do with the UFC or any other US MMA org. e TV / The Ultimate Fighter is the reason for the explosion in the US. UFC PPV's are drawing anywhere from 400k to 700k buys right now. Boxing has been left in the dust by MMA and it's still growing...

Pride is coming to the US in Oct for the 1st time and they brought out Tyson at their press conf a while back. They're just trying to draw US fans that aren't familiar with Pride. Butterbean is fighting on the Oct card...he's an MMA fighter now...again, trying to draw US fans with a name they recognize. Tyson is not on the card for Oct...he's not on any card yet. They've just mentioned that he will be doing some exhibition fights, in Korea or China (I don't recall which). Tyson is a big MMA fan...

Pride is one of the biggest sports in Japan. Their shows have drawn up to 90k people. They DEFINITELY don't need Tyson to help hype their org, or the sport. The only reason Tyson was brought in was to help get US fans onboard with Pride...

    Probably.

Sylvia is big, slow, and has limited skills, but he wins. He is a tough fighter who loves to brawl and has a good chin. I was shocked as when he beat Arlovski the first time as well as the 2nd.

I thought Arlovski would have shot on Sylvia, take him down, and submitted him. Basically just expose his weaker ground skills. But he stood up the whole time and traded jabs. Sylvia fought a smart fight keeping the distance and ac ulating points (much like Hominick did against Gurgel). He didn't want to go to the ground, and wisely so.

We will see what Monson does, but I think Tim will keep his belt.

I agree...AA's gameplan was terrible. I think he was trying to prove that he doesn't have a glass chin instead of winning the damn fight. That was the worst 5 rd fight I've ever seen.

Sylvia surviving the punch from AA in their 2nd fight was the only thing he's done that has impressed me. I still think he was lucky to put AA down like he did. I think he'd have been in trouble had that not happened...

I don't think Monson has much of a chance, but I would LOVE to see him win....

Anyway, I respect Sylvia because he is not afraid to bang and brawl with anyone. I know you don't like the MFS camp, but I've always been a fan of theirs. They've proven to be one of the best teams in MMA.

INTERNATIONAL FIGHT LEAGUE (IFL), FOX SPORTS NET PROVIDE CONSECUTIVE NIGHTS OF ORIGINAL ACTION SUNDAY AND MONDAY

First-ever airing of Matt Lindland-Jeremy Horn fight runs Sunday, Pitbulls-Silverbacks and Gracie-Miletich Superfight airs Monday as part of two hour "Best Damn Sports Show Period" Special

NEW YORK, September 28, 2006 --The International Fight League (IFL) will provide fans with two consecutive nights of action this coming Sunday, Oct. 1, and Monday night, Oct. 2, on Fox Sports Net. Sunday night, fans will get to see a one-hour special featuring the Jeremy Horn-Matt Lindland fight from Memorial Coliseum in Portland. On Monday night, the IFL and FSN will present a special two-hour prime-time edition of "The Best Damn Sports Show Period," featuring last week's battle between the Silverbacks and the Pitbulls. The team matchup will then be followed by the much-anticipated Pat Miletich-Renzo Gracie Superfight, which wrapped up the "World Team Championship" quarterfinal evening last Saturday at The Mark in Moline, Illinois. The Monday matchup will also see the legendary announce team of Stephen Quadros and Bas Rutten reunited for the first time in several years.

"These consecutive nights of IFL action will go on the 'must-see' list for all MMA fans, and being part of the 'Best Damn Sports Show Period' Monday night will be an added plus," said IFL Commissioner and co-founder Kurt Otto. "The fans who witnessed these two events first hand will get to relive them on tape, while those around the country will be treated to the action they have only read about thus far for the first time."

The Sunday night action on FSN is slated to run in most areas at 6:00 p.m. local time, with the exception of FSN Arizona, where it will air at 5:30 p.m. The show will also be re-broadcast throughout the week, and the entire FSN schedule is available online at www.IFL.tv.
The Monday night two-hour special will air in most markets at 8:00 pm. local time, with the exception of FSN Arizona, where it will air at 7:30 p.m. The show will also be re-broadcast later that night and throughout the week.

Founded in 2005 by Kurt Otto, a real estate investor and a life-long martial arts participant and Gareb Shamus, chairman of Wizard Entertainment Group, the International Fight League (IFL) was created to establish a centralized and structured organization that brings the power and influence of the mixed martial arts industry together. On August 25, 2006, IFL entered into an Agreement and Plan of Merger with Paligent, Inc. (PGNT:OTCBB), pursuant to which IFL would emerge as the surviving en y. For further information regarding the merger, contact Paligent at (212) 755-5461. For more information on the IFL, go to www.IFL.tv.

Riiiight. Grown up discussions about a 13-year old sport.

Tell you what, when you kids get done calling each other names out on the playground, come inside when 'the boys' and me will be watching a decent sport that won't wilt in another couple of years due to the fact it's fan base will have grown up and gone to college or moved out with the 5 kids and 300-pound wife to a trailer park that doesn't get cable.

You know, back in the 50s they had another fad - roller derby, that was pretty dern popular at the time and then made a comback in the 80s when I was a youngin', but faded away again. Such is the fate of all fads... which will include ufc.

Maybe I'll make you some lemonade, ok champ?

Now that there is nothing left to be said but baseless and adolescent namecalling, which is the way of your generation and I'm sure which will follow in my direction shortly, I'll let you have your cute little thread back.

When you are ready to graduate to something other than a fad, then maybe we can talk on the same level.

What makes you think anyone gives a about what you think about MMA? The fact that you keep coming in here shows you are a pathetic . I'm sure you hate the UFC and Pride because it reminds you of how you get the kicked out of your punk ass.

Now go back to ing your sheep and watching figure skating in Oklahoma.

That's funny, I've never heard of another "fad" that's lasted more than a decade Apparently the only mma fans you've run into are the TUF newbie fans who think because they've taken a few bjj classes they can whip anybody's ass. They will move on, for sure, and then the "real fans" (those of us who have been following this for years) will be able to kick back and breathe a sigh of relief that all the idiots are gone and we can have our sport back.

By the way, enlighten me please. Exactly which generation is "mine"? Seems to me the most adolescent thing we've seen around here so far are your bitter bad-at ude posts about something you don't know much about. Wife leave you to become a Chuck Lidell groupie?

I watched Horn - Lindland in IFL last night... :-)

LMFAO!! You're calling us "kids" yet YOU play WoW?? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Too funny...

I'm a 29 yr old engineer, married with a kid, that loves the NFL, college football, NBA, and MLB. There are so many intriguing aspects to MMA, but it's still not for everybody. Based on the things you've said, you know NOTHING about the sport. Your opinions means NOTHING...

You're comparing ROLLER DERBY from the 50's to a legitimate combat sport?? Hahahaha...WoW... (no pun intended)
