Duncan didnt deserve the MVP in that series. We all know that the "best player" for the team that wins is going to get the MVP. The reason you guys won was the other guys stepped up. For us terry went 7/26 or something in the final game. Nobody else stepped up. Thats the point.

And anyways i distinctly remember duncan struggling in that series.
Duncan didn't struggle. The object of having an all-star post player is to draw the attention of the opposing team and score when under single coverage and dish when double teamed. The space created for others to step up comes from that presence and on defensive end when that player dominates on both ends.

Yeah that was brilliant... But it was also dumb, b/c he should've saved it for the playoffs. But in that game I must admit it was a crafty move that paid off. Of course I must give props to Tim for noticing later on instead of his mind being on what strip club he's going to or which one of the biyatches want to get down w/ the "Big Fundamental". That tactic won't work should both teams meet later.
It's not something that's gonna only work once, because all Avery has to do is switch back and forth. He can alternate between having the guys actually double when he says it and not.

I don't think its going to play big part in any game, but he can continue to keep Duncan on his toes with it.

All Duncan has to do is not listen to what AJ says and actually watch the doubles.

I'm sure he's smart enough to do that. It's probably more about the brief instant of hesitation that it causes naturally.

Well, if he called himself out in the media about it, I'm sure it will be on his mind next time.

no he's not as of this season

and to be honest I think if the Spurs and Mavs were to play 10 straight games, AJ would outcoach Pop 9 times out of 10

Pop's been slipping as a coach more and more each year

Picking up one of the league's senior citizens in the off-season isn't creativity.

As for the better coach comment...

Avery owned Duncan one time. You guys need to get a dose of reality. Step away from the keyboard put down the knife and think for a few minutes.

I don't think it was a brilliant move at all. It was pretty ing stupid. It worked, yeah. But it was not brilliant. It's a one time non-basketball tactic. Hack-a-Bowen only worked once, too.

It will. I don't think it's some huge factor to swing things in the Mavs favor. The effects can't be that substantial. But I do think it's something that can disrupt the rhythm of the Spurs usual offensive flow through Duncan.

sure he is. that's why he's been outcoached in nearly every game the two teams have matched up against each other going back to last year's playoffs

Umm.....even you said it's not going to play a big part in any game. No sour grapes here, brah. So far the Mavs aren't doing anything different this year than they have in past years. They have the best record, go on long winning streaks, beat the Spurs. Nothing is really that different, yet.

The Mavs get props for winning the game last night. Stop being so "defensive".

He is the an x-factor for the Mavs when he throws Finley at power foward. Spurs are no longer any kind of a threat to the Mavs with that joke of a roster they have and are yesterdays news. The Lakers/Suns are teams we need to be aware of a litte more now. IF the spurs can make some miracle trades by the trade deadline then they could be the big threat to the Mavs but you turned down Cory for Barry and Udrih....nuff said!

One time? You're treating the playoffs last year and the two games this year in SA is a singular occurrence?

In 2005, didn't the Mavs beat the Spurs by over 25 around this time in the season?

Watching my fav player shooting FT has become a nightmare. Anyone else notice Duncan twitches his elbow for a second before shooting his FT? I don't see him doing that when he pratices FT during the shoot around. Also, when he shoots those 1000's of FT during practice, does he also take about 10 freaking seconds for each one, probably not. Tim's gotta shoot his in game FT just like the way he shoots them in practice. I recently watched the old game where Tim scored his career high against the Mavs. Back then his FT had much more arc and it probably only took him 4 secs to set up and shoot....

It was pretty lame that Duncan fell for it, but it's even lamer that AJ even tried something like that. Does he not have enough faith in his players to think they can actually win the ballgame without little "Nellie" tricks like that?

Everytime I read this thread le I read it as

"Spurs' Duncan falls for Johnson's verbal "

and kudos to AJ, it was a brilliant move, evne if it was a bit grade school-ish

if Pop did it, we might even go back to thinking he was a decent coach again

    "brilliant move"

How many times have we heard the parroted banality: "do whatever it takes" ?

Well, Avery had Tim in the Mavs' paint in the second half right in front of Avery's bench. I wonder if it would have worked if Avery was yelling "double" from the other end of the court. Actually Avery spends a lot of time at mid-court anyway. Probably didn't matter.

Tim's counter-productive habit of holding the ball set himself up for this gambit.

It's hard to go from winning to losing, as opposed to just..losing
