Of course he had to shoot becaues of the clock, but that still didn't stop many from thinking NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

That was NOT a high percentage shot, I don't care how anybody tries to spin it...
Exactly. Props to Fins but the chances of him missing that were good.
One game and one shot and now Fin is "back".
While we hope this spurs him on...

From L.A.s point of view, that is the shot you want the Spurs to take, except have Lamar Odom stay on Finley and not do the stoopid double down on Tim.

Now who screamed Noooooo, when TD drove to the hoop with 1 min left in regulation and instead of making the layup, kicked it out to the cold shooting Bruce Bowen in the corner, who nailed it?

That point is that very rarely are you going to get a high percentage shot in the last seconds. I don't think there is anyone here who wouldn't rather have TD laying the ball in instead of a 28ft jumper, but all things considered the 28ft jumper in that situation wasn't bad.

Maybe if Finley had taken a 28 footer at the end of regulation in Game 3, 4, or 7 of the WCSF, Mavs fans would still be slinking around jealous of the Spurs back-to-back les and 4 in 7 run.

If you watch a team play enough you can tell when a shooter releases it whether or not it will be good. The moment he shot it, there was no doubt it was going to be ripping the net cord.
I want you to watch a game with another member and say "make" or "miss" on every shot the Spurs take. Then we can find out from that person if you were 100% right or not...

(seriously, maybe the dumbest thing ever posted here??)

Scared less, I'll admit. As open as he was, it was a 26ft shot at least and no matter how "on" the ball looks leaving the hand, that's a lot of distance for stuff to go wrong. , I thought if a guy breathed wrong in the nosebleeds it would knock that ball off course. Great shot, but yeah I was worried.

The question is, what percentage of the time do NBA teams convert on a game-winnning or -tieing play with ~7 seconds left in the game? I don't know that number, but I'm guessing for the sake of argument it's something like 10-20%. So now the qeustion is, was Finley's shot a better-than-average attempt under those cir stances?

Look at his form in that shot. F'n perfect. The only thing is that it looks like he didn't get the optimal grip across the seams, which is to be expected under the cir stances. And Odom is really is not position to affect the shot.

When an All-Star level shooter gets a clean shot off in form from that range, I'd put it somewhere in the 30-40% chance of success. It wasn't a 0.4* fluke.

He shot it with enough time to have a chance at an offensive rebound when it was obviously going to miss.

    Smart.

I think the key was he had no time to think about it. More that than when it was in the game. How many times have you seen someone hit a shot from an out of bounds play when the shot clock has 2-3 seconds on it? Guys know they have to shoot, no time to think about missing. The time pressure sometimes can help.

There was a positive from Mavs fan's perspective and that's that Kobe ended up the loser

Michael has the most classic, text-book shooting form of any Spur, perhaps since Steve Kerr. He jumps up (not forward), effortless, smooth, quick, vertical full-arm extension, wrist/finger follow through, nice rainbow.

Look how high he jumps. He shoots with his legs as well as his arm. Kobe does similarly.

Before the play, I was thinking to myself that it would be hilarious if Finley took the final shot and made it (this was without knowing that he had actually shot well from 3pt range this game). Hilarious only because he hasn't shot well and really isn't the go-to-guy in that situation. The only thing that surprised me was the distance of the shot...but the result was sweet.

Actually as soon as he caught the pass I was yelling SHOOOT IT!! And as soon as he shot it I stood up and raised my hands because I knew it was goin in. But then again, my extreme loyality (call it homerism) to all things Wisconsin makes me believe that he will hit every shot he takes. But this time I just knew it was goin in before he shot it.
Just one question....were u a mav fan when Finley still played for Dallas?

I was traveling and missed the game but watched the replay tonight. ABC had a replay camera view of the bench during Tim's feed out of the double team to Fin. It was telling.

Coach Pop stands there with arms crossed, focused and watching the called play executed on the floor.
Francisco Elson raises his arm just as Violet Palmer's right arm is raised to signify a three point attempt. Elson sees enough to satisfy him and he confidently turns his head and walks away, knowing the basket is true without seeing it swish. James White and Fabri Oberto stand there and raise their arms in unison with mouths agape as the ball hits the twine. Robert Horry and Beno Udrih follow a split second behind with Violet Palmer's other arm joining them in the foreground. Coach PJ fist-pumps and Don Newman pirhouette's, flexing his right arm...

....and Coach Pop stands there with arms crossed, focused and watching the called play executed on the floor.
