No offense, but giving up something material is what we teach our children so that it will have a tangible evidence to them when they are too young to understand deeper meanings. But as you get older, you should seek for something more on the spiritual side. As jman said- give something back- do something good that you do not normally do- go to Mass during the week, volunteer... Of if you want to give something up- make it something meaningful- how about giving up gossip- or anger- or resentment for Lent. You should try to do something that transforms more than just your body.
