And now if you really want to feel good, take a look at the draft history of the Knicks, keeping in mind that they've had higher picks for an entire decade and still could not outdraft the Spurs:

I saw him play in 6 games for the Spurs last season.
So, yeah, I did.
Not surprising. Stick to hoping Oden isn't a bust.
More like stick to hoping Oden stays off the dance dance revolution or the Guitar Hero over the summer.
Spurs traded their 1st round pick (#15) to the Lakers for Mack Calvin and cash. The Lakers drafted Brad Davis who would, of course, end up being an excellent player with the Mavs (first Mavs jersey retired).
Mack Calvin was waived by the Spurs a few months after being traded to them.
Hence justifying complaints about the current administration in the Spurs FO.
Oh to have those good old days of savvy management back again!!
the contextual piece is what you said previously, #21 and the luck of the ping pong balls.
I'm only holding management accountable to the same standard as we hold players. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY. There are no lifetime exemptions for championships. Maybe get 2 to 3 year grace period like in the case of Robert Horry, but 7 years is a bit much.
There's nothing magic about the Round. The last pick of the first round is how much better than the first pick of the second round? Any player drafted that low is a surprise, if they work out. And why wouldn't they be, considering how many of the first round picks bust out?
In the past 12 seasons, the Spurs have had exactly 1 good first round pick, and that one got them Tim Duncan. Other than that, they had one pick at #24, one at #26, and the rest were all #28 or #29. Those might as well be second-rounders. ing about who the Spurs selected in those spots is like second-guessing stock picks 5 years down the road. If it was easy to pick the good ones, we'd all be rich. But it's really easy to spot them in hindsight.
In those same 12 seasons, there have been 180 players picked at #15 and above by other teams. Who do you think is filling up most of the roster spots around the league? We never had a shot at drafting any of those guys. In that same period of time, the Spurs have put together the best record of any team in any professional sport. And the last time I checked, you have to have players to succeed in a sport. If you guys are seriously ing because some of the crap-shoot late picks haven't worked out, get over it.
look on the bright side, at least the spurs aren't the ones who drafted kwame brown.
bizarre trivia note
Leon Smith the 99 1st rounder traded to Dallas with the foster home background and mental problems last played for los Estudiantes de Bahia Blanca.
In 1985 when we drafted that waste of space Hughes.....we could have had Joe Dumars, AC Green, or Terry Porter
From 1986, I wasn't mad about Johnny Dawkins. He had some skills, just had that unfortunate wrist injury. BTW, there wasn't much after him in the draft that year, except John Salley.....
In 1987, we got the DUH pick...DRob. What sucks though, is that Reggie Lewis was drafted by the Celtics one pick ahead of us in the 1st round. So we drafted Cadillac with the last pick of the 1st that year. How sweet would it have been to have gotten Robinson and Lewis from the same draft.
1988 we drafted Willie Anderson, no complaints here. The only other guy I would have even been happy with was Dan Majerle.
1989 we got Sean Elliott, stupendous pick....thank goodness Never Nervous Pervis and Ferry were picked 1st and 2nd that year.
1990 we should have drafted Elden Campbell or Tony Kukoc instead of Dwayne juice. Antonio Davis would have been a far superior pick to Tony Massengil. No complaints about Sean Higgins, he was the last player picked that year.
1991 no first, but we did get Greg "Black Hole" Sutton late in the 2nd. did he ever pass the ball once it touched his hands? btw, he was the best player left.
1992 other than like 6 players, this entire draft was week....Shaq, Zo, Horry, Sprewell, Jon Barry, Geiger.....and we got nothing but garbage out of it....but we could have drafted Sprewell.
1993 no 1st again.....Whitney in the 2nd was the best player left.
1994 I can't believe we drafted Bill Curley instead of Wesley Person. Didn't we trade Curly to Detroit along with Elliott for Rodman.......
1995 Corey Alexander at the end of the 1st.....horrible pick. But if you look at the entire 2nd round, you tend to forgive SA for making the choice. Man that draft was abysmal.
1996 no draft picks at all
1997 our second DUH pick, Tim Duncan.
1998 we passed on Al Harrington for Felipe Lopez. Heck we could have even had Rashard Lewis instead. Derrick Dial was an ok pick....it was either him or Ryan Bowen or Greg Buckner. I could live with Dial.
1999 Leon Smith was a horrible pick, but we traded him away....but there was this little argentian diamond we found late in the 2nd round....some dude name Emmanuel Ginobili.
2000 no 1sts....we drafted Carawell instead if Michael Redd....ugh
2001 Frenchie gets drafted in the 1st, Javtokas late in the 2nd...a nice draft
2002 we could have drafted Boozer instead of Salmons, or even Matt Barnes. We drafted Scola late in the 2nd.
2003 this was the year we were courting Jason Kidd, so we traded our pick, Barbosa, to the Suns to save money....Kidd signed with NJ and we gave away a very nice young prospect, who has played well for the Suns. He sure would make a nice backup for Tony though. I used to get upset that we passed on Josh Howard, until he admitted to being a pothead.
2004 we got Beno...who was a huge underachiever. We should have taken Duhon instead. This was also the year we picked Lettuce Sato and Karaulov.....neither panned out for us, which sucks.
2005 love the Mahimni pick. I think he will do some very nice things for our team over the next several years.
2006 no 1sts....drafted Markota and traded him to Milwaukee
2007 I liked the Splitter pick, but sure wish we could have gotten Almond. I just wanted a quality wing player from the 2nd, but we didnt get one.
