No they were the greatest "stylists" of music ever. Yes they revolutionized music but that is just as much a product of the times as of them. Hey I love the Beatles and George Harrison is my favorite Beatle, I've heard most if not all his recorded music. My opinion is that the Beatles' musical talent peaked with "Beatles For Sale" 1964, after that their lyrics and their style ruled.
Before I go I just wanted to mention Skunk Baxter and Denny Dias as the greatest STUDIO guitarists!!!!![]()
This just makes no sense at all.
To say that they were "stylists" borders on insanity. They were pure musicians. Hundreds of bands refer to them as being their inspiration.
As for the albums after "Beatles For Sale", you are definitely insane. "Sgt. Pepper's" and "The White Album" are probably the greatest albums in the history of music.
"The White Album" especially shows their range and musicianship.
I'd actually put Frampton above Duane Allman (on that Top 100 list) and I have always been a big Allman Brothers Band fan. Duane had a lot of blues and soul but some of his slide work wasn't technically pleasing to the ears like Peter is. Frampton got even better after he left Humble Pie. Eric Johnson is top shelf, as was Stevie Ray. BB King is the best bluesman, bar none.
The beatles played very simple music for the most part. They had great style and song writing abilities, some of their productions were insanely over the top and well put together, but none were overly technical in the music, it was pretty straight forward. I am not saying they probably were not fantastic musicians, they did it for a living, and did it a lot...but beatles music is very simple, but great! that is what makes it great in my opinion!
Alot of musicians also state that the sex pistols were an inspiration to their music, but anyone with half a brain wouldnt consider the sex pistols great musicsians, they were good at putting together a song, and delivering it!
Than you very much![]()
Hey why the personal attack? I thought we were having a lively discussion of our opinions. I don't think you're insane, you just have a different opinion!
It's not a personal attack.
But, I do think it's insane.
Their music is not simple at all.
They employed several techniques in their music, both classical and cutting edge. They expiremented and set trends. I don't see how their music is "simple", especially from Sgt. Pepper's and on.
Sorry I took "you are definitely insane" personal!![]()
No, not personal at all.
But, you have brilliant flashes of insanity.

Thank you, so do you!![]()
That list might work for best "rock" guitarist ever. However, the best guitarists ever have their roots in jazz. There are several jazz guitarists that are better than anybody on that list.
Reporter: "So Eric, how does it feel to be the best guitar player in the world?"
Clapton: "I wouldn't know, you'd have to ask Phil Keaggy"
![]()
OK, the above is the legand of Phil Keaggy, but his talents speak for themselves.
A personal favorite of mine is Jerry Cantrell. Very versatile. Thrash, punk, Wah-Wah, bendy, melodic... great, great guitarist.
Another would be Todd Whitener, formerly of Days Of The New... Anyone that can rock a steel-stringed acoustic guitar with the ferocity of thrash metal and the melody of a classical guitarist deserves recognition. His Tantric stuff not withstanding. That stuff was too stunted. Didn't show off his versatility. Crappy melodic metal in the from of Staind.
No Ted Nugent?
Mark Knopfler should be about 23 places higher...
I challenge you to go find any guitarist on that list and ask them to play any of Mark Knopfler's well known songs...
And watch them get their ass kicked.
And as always...Prince got dissed, yet again.
Duane Allman is always ranked so high on these lists for the same reason Reggie Lewis has his jersey retired....
Don't get me wrong...he was fantastic, but he's not #2 all time....if only because of his limited body of work.
Besides...all you gotta do is listen to Derek and the Dominoes and you can hear Clapton was his match...
And Kurt Cobain wasn't that good of a guitarist. He made some sick punk melodies, but all in all, I'd say he doesn't belong in the top-75 of all time.
Love Nirvana. Huge fan. But Cobain was an everyman. His songs were quite simple to play. When I learned the guitar, within a year I could play Nevermind almost entirely.
I registered for this site just to add my 2cents.
How could they leave off ACE FREHLEY![]()
Sure he wore makeup and platform boots for 20 years,
but the dude was a total wiz that Kicked major ass with the Axe.
Damn shame that alcohol and drugs stifled his creativity, but he defiantly
should be on that list
I agree with a lot of what you said there...but I wouldn't say simplicity is a negative...some of the best riffs ever are some of the most simplistic.
That said...I agree, Cobain doesn't belong on any greatest guitarists of all time lists.
No Michael Schenker on that list?
Randy Rhoads in the bottom 15?
Hey, I'm not bashing. I said his melodic punk riffs were sick. They defined rock music for the 90's. I love simplicity. I'd much rather listen to Nirvana than Yes or Rush. I like the latter, but it can become overwelming, and not in a good way.
I was merely stating that his easy chord progressions, while very good and very catchy, aren't something I'd say is "best of" quality. Not for a guitar player.
Cantrell is underrated. I never even saw his name on the list. Listen to MUSIC BANK, then tell me he doesn't deserve a spot in the top-100. I'd say top-50.
